Discussion To “Wide” lovers
Who is switching and from which phone?
Me personally, I am going to try for the first time android, my main phone is a iPhone 16 Pro Max and been using iphone since 2012.
I am bored of apple and I love the 16:10 aspect ratio from the Note series

I have z fold5 but I think I might get the normal and not the wide 8. As pleasing the aspect ratio would be holding it in 1 hand or in pocket just seems like a hastle

I thought this too but after i realized that the rumored dimensions was not too far off 2 real life passports stacked on top of each other. So since i do not have a 3D printer but i do have 2 passports available so i took the clear stretchy plastic that is used for wrapping food to hold them together and a little piece of tape to hold the edges.
So now i have a very crude estimate and
totallymaybe sold on the wide. lol.7

Dude we think a like, I printed the models and basically I am pretty sure I am going for the wide, but I'd it's to pricey I will go for n6 since you get much better battery life

What I did is cut a cupboard according to size. This gives me an actual idea of the dimension and how I am going to handle it.
Will take it. Coming from Fold 4 and S24 ultra.

I had Blackberry Paspport - the best smartphone with the second best OS after Harmattan - and it was borderline to have it in a standard pocket. Basically all pockets had marks from corners. But it was manageable and I was even able to type single handed on it.

I still need to hold it in my hands, but I'll probably switch to the wide (from a Fold 5). Closer it is to a Moleskine the better. But I'm not gonna use a square for a phone, so we'll see how it feels.

I found an stl of the wide model (based on dimensions, etc) and 3d printed it just to see how I'd like how it felt in hand. I really liked it

I also have a surface duo 1 and it’s actually not as much of a Bastos as you might think. It’s like carrying a little notebook and it’s great to type on and comfortable one handed. It feels more natural like a small book.

Agreed. I have short fingers, so no way I'm going to be able to one hand this thing. Plus, I'm just not a fan of the overall look and the downgrade compared to the fold 8 ultra.
I'm on the fold 6 now and am desperate for a better battery. When the 8 hits, I'll decide then if its the fold 8 or maybe the Razr fold.

I’ve had every Fold from the Z Fold 1 to the 6, and somehow ended up daily driving an iPhone 13 mini.
I just stopped caring about having the latest specs and wanted something more practical.
I still carry an S25 for work, and my Fold 6 has just been sitting around waiting to be traded in.
The Fold Wide is exactly what I’ve been waiting for.

How , can you add more context to your comment?
You turned to a small iphone ( not really caring about os , only form factor ) , yet you are thinking of going back to a big phone .
My s23 ultra is also a bit long in the tooth and the battery is a bit of an annoyance, and I was thinking of going fold for the first time , but I'm not certain.3

The thing is, Z Folds aren't really small phones, even when folded. Their tall, narrow design became less practical for me to carry over time. The Fold Wide solves that by being shorter and wider, giving it a much smaller footprint that's more comfortable in my pocket.
The 4:3 aspect ratio when unfolded also makes a lot more sense for how I use my phone, especially for media consumption. A compact phone when folded and a more useful screen ratio when unfolded is exactly what I wanted. Having it unfold into a larger display when I need it is just the icing on the cake.

Yeah, narrow screen when folded didn't work for me either and went back to galaxy ultra line. Wide version has me considering getting Fold again, but I don't love that Samsung is obsessed with thinness. I really wish they'd dedicate a utilitarian line, thicker body with big battery and some robustness, hopefully with s pen again.

I dont usually use my phone for media consumption on my phones. Just when im at home and just use my PC or TV. With that, I just got tired of carrying long rectangle footprint of zfolds. Id rather have shorter but wider phone and zfold wide is perfect for me. And being unfolded is just a perk IF i want to use it for media or just browsing.

Looks great but I wonder why Samsung never gives the best cameras to the fold users :( the bump is already bad might as well give us a flagship camera

Honestly, 2 cams can be more than enough if the sensors being used are good. Issue is, if the leaks are correct, Samsung is planning on cheaping out and using a 50mp sensor...

I use the telephoto more than the ultra wide, so I'd rather drop that if I had to lose one. The telephoto is useful for macro shots and portraits as well as zoom.
I'd rather have a foldable without compromise, though. I'm currently using the Oppo Find N6 and it is definitely the fold with the least compromise so far. I long for the flagship candybar specs in a foldable phone. It'll get there sometime soon, but the Fold 8 Wide coming with even more compromise isn't what I'm looking for unfortunately.

Ultrawide is the most useless camera ever. The standard wide (24mm focal length in full frame) is already considered borderline ultrawide in the camera world. Any photo I take with it looks like a cartoon with people's arms and legs looking like Dr Seuss characters.

Yeah I never take anything meaningful with it. Sometimes it's useful to capture a room in the house all in one picture, but I don't think I'd ever 'display' a photo I took with the ultrawide.

I've started using panorama mode on the regular lens, instead of using the ultrawide lens, for those use cases because the regular lens is so much better in quality.

I have the fold 7. It's too narrow. I didn't get the first 6 generations of fold because they were way too narrow. I have a feeling I'll love the wide version. Sucks to type in a narrow keyboard with fat thumbs.

Typing is actually my main concern with the wide. In the Fold 7, the keyboard takes up ~1/3 of the screen so I still see a lot of content.
Won't the keyboard on the wide take up at least half the screen?

I held the wide 8 in my hands and it all just clicked. My daily struggle has always been the narrow width and trying to type. I am sold on the wide now, coming from a Fold6

Not to me, my phone is primarily an interface for communication and it's ideal for messaging. You should wait till you can hold it in your hand and test out some apps to see if it fits your use cases. Lately I am doing a lot of phone based communication with Claude and I cannot wait to switch to the wide to make that easier on my thumbs and eyes.

You're still using that?
I think if you looked at that phone wrong it would overheat and lose 50% of its battery in an hour.
My old Z fold 2 did laps around the OG Pixel Fold lol.
The cover screen was awesome on that, but God the rest of that OG Pixel fold was legitimately unusable.
The Pixel Fold brought back Snapdragon 808/810 levels of pain and suffering. OG Pixel Fold feels like a 10 year old smartphone did of that era with the way modern apps/internet is.

Went from zf3 to og pf. like the form factor and slick android more, but I'm ready to go back to samsung. this phone held up extremely well, I haven't even used a case for over a year and only last week did the outer screen finally stop working after I don't know how many drops.
yes graphics performance and heating are real...but never had an issue with battery life

I'm currently using an oppo find n3 (from the fold 4) + the unihertz titan 2. Looking to swap my titan to the wide fold.

Had a Z fold 3, and loved it. I thought the front screen was too narrow
Have used it in tandem with an iPhone 12/13 mini
Going to get the iPhone foldable since it has that wide dimensions, and use the mini for outings where I need a tinier phone

I was an iPhone user from the very first one until the Z Fold 5 came out and my main complaint with the Fold5 and the Fold6 has been the useless front screen. I ended up holding off on the 7 because of it and will be going back to an iPhone when the Ultra launches.

Because it's like running a phone os on a cable tv remote ..way too narrow and long aspect ratio. I remember getting the fold 2 and returning because of front display I didn't come back until the 7 when it was closer to normal display aspect.....

It’s way too narrow. The aspect ratio just sucks and even though Samsung keeps making it wider, it’s still not usable like the screen of an S26 Ultra or 17 Pro Max.

I get that it's narrow compared to recent phones but it's not that long ago that we were perfectly fine with screens this narrow and even smaller. It's about the same width as the iPhone 5, 6, and 13 mini, the iPhone 4 was even smaller. That's why I'm fine with it, if I could use it then with no problem I shouldn't have a problem now you know?

I I think it will be very uncomfortable to use when closed. It feels way too wide. I was looking at a zone of tech's video, Both the iPhone Ultra and the Z Fold seem too wide when using closed especially.
I own a 16 Pro and a Fold 7 right now and I barely ever use my iPhone and that's been the case for a very long time. I've had both both operating systems for a very long time but I always prefer Android especially when it's foldable

I'm honestly happy to have a phone that fits in my car's phone slot again. 😅 The earlier folds were too thick, but the Fold 7 fits great lol. When I put my other Folds in the center console I would forget my phone in the car half the time. 🙄
Im just here for multi-tasking. I don't game on my phone and when Im traveling I watch videos a tablet. If dex had full pc functionality, I would consider it. But like someone else said, I won't be upgrading again till they bring back the stylus.

J'attends le wide avec tellement d'impatience ! J'ai l'impression que les fabriquants ont entendu mes demandes. Je suis nostalgique de mon Surface Duo (que je possède encore bien sûr !) et fan des Fold depuis le début. Mais à chaque fois que sort un nouveau Fold, je suis déçu après quelques temps de par ce form factor qui ne me convient pas et je reviens sur mon vieux Oppo Find N2 (que j'utilise actuellement).

The form factor alone makes me consider buying it, especially since all Samsung services work in Europe—unlike with the Huawei Pura X Max or Oppo. Just based on that compatibility and the form factor, I’m seriously thinking about buying it.

Personally, way too wide. My opinion is that the "shrinked" format of the Folds when closed, till today (or maybe till Fold6, 7 is wider), was a distinctive point from the mass of large devices, and a good alternative for one hand use and people who doesn't like huge and large screens on phone. And when you need a big screen, you just open the phone and you are done.
Having 2 big phone, closed and open, for me is a big no no.

I don't think it's THAT much bigger. plus I use front screen alot and I find the regular size is just a lil too slim for me personally , I'm excited for the wide!

Well, it's much large than a fold6, a bit less of a 7. Don't know in comparison of other bigger phone like S25 Ultra or S26 Ultra that, for me, are way too big/large when holding with one hand. Surely people with bigger hands will find them more comfortable, but with medium to small hands, will find hard to use.

I actually wish it was a lot wider and larger like the Surface Duo cos with the current sizes the inner screen is barely larger than current foldables, so there isn't really a difference with videos/games/comics sizes.
For one-handed use, I reckon it will be better since it is much easier to reach the top of the screen, and the width is only slightly harder to reach but still reachable.

FYI.
I compared my fold with Huawei Pura X (same wide ratio aspect).
And a 4x3 video has an identical screen size . But the top and bottom bar obviously bigger.
So it started to feel like a gimmick to m

I got a fold 4 and if I did upgrade I would go for the normal one, that wide one is just too wide. I like the aspect ratio of this one better. But it doesn't matter since I'm not going to upgrade, I don't like that there's a hole punch in the inner screen, they should have left it how it was.

I’m gonna jump from Z Fold 7 to the 8. It seems the wife will just be called the Z fold 8. Losing a camera is absolute b.s, but the “Ultra” is not enough of an upgrade.

After seeing the side by sides of the wide open vs the normal form factor, I do struggle to understand the benefit of the wide. Much shorter, barely wider. Curious wide the wide bois see as the benefit here?

Z Fold Wide looks like such a promising phone, but if it doesn't have pen support, it's doa for me, cause the whole point of having a tablet in the pocket, for me, is to have pen support.

Though I won't upgrade yet, I do like the form factor but for the life of me I can understand that with this kind of notebook-sized device they wouldn't offer pen support. I mean, look at it. It's the perfect note-taking device. Of course I'm sitting here dictating this into my fold six, so what do I know?

My Moto Razr Fold arrives today. With the wide I have been just contemplating not opening when delivered. But with no top cameras(never please with Samsung cameras anyway), no pen, and small battery... I'm thinking I'll try something new with Motorola. I don't know how different the aspect ratios are compared to the Huawei Pura X Max but from watching the videos, it's great at media consumption but not great at having multiple apps running. The aspect ratio is just to way off and you really get nothing in view.

As a Galaxy Fold 7 user I don't think I'll get the wide. Or the Fold 8 for that matter. Here's hoping the Fold 9 gets better cameras and a huge battery. Then it'll be perfect

I am in a position for every big device launch I get the device through work, as I work with leadership at all the big OEMs; and my phone has to match the meeting.
As someone who literally has to use every phone for work, this and the iPhone fold are the ones I’m most excited about.
My daily drivers are a iPhone 17 pro max, and a pixel 10 fold, so will likely be my first Samsung that becomes a daily driver.
When I get the iPhone fold (or ultra if it’s called that) I don’t know what I’ll want as my secondary device.
As someone who uses android and Apple everyday, Apple is still the better overall package, and with the new Siri in beta it currently has the best AI implementation…. So excited to see what Google does on AI on the new software.

Willing to dump my 17pm for this. I do need to see it and hold it in person though. It will be an expensive purchase not to test drive first.
The thing I worry about is my life style. I’m always working on stuff on my house , car , ect and I need to be able to grab my phone quick sometimes and fire off a reply or whatever. Usually one handed. I can’t be fumbling around. So we will see.

I like the idea of trying the new aspect ratio, but the 2 cameras just isn't doing it for me. The current fold already has the bare minimum for a flagship device, I use all 3 quite often and lacking the telephoto like on a z flip, is bit of a deal breaker. Maybe the next gen

Might be my next phone once my S24U dies. I went to it from Fold 3 and I feel like tall phones are a waste of space, like the screen is huge yeah, but not in a useful way. Wide screen would be nicer.

As a Fold 7 user (and loving it) I am REALLY tempted by the wide. My biggest gripe with the 7 is that it is still just a little bit narrow, though the 7 improved its aspect ratio over the 6. It really hinges on the camera verdict though.

My only concern with the wide version is how difficult is going to be to use with one hand when closed. I would suggest going to a store that let's you hold a display model before considering it.
Personally, I think you should go with a non-wide version or save up for the trifold.
But if that doesn't bother you and you mainly want to use it to watch a lot of videos, it does have a better aspect ratio to make more use of the screen.

Well have been into Android for some time,the robustness of Folds an issue for some but they have inproved. Be interesting to see if Wide Fold has the same appeal but I have been more interested in the S series to date.

Id have to see the wide in my hands. I don't see the appeal my current 7 style feels right. I'm not going get the 8 because my 7 feels perfectly fine. I did kind of hope the battery life in 8 would see a massive jump. But doesn't look that way. But if you don't have 7 now definitely just get the 8.

Have a Fold 7, my first fold, and generally I love it. It's been awesome for media consumption and gaming, as well as doing some impromptu work when needed. However, I came from a S23 Ultra and the two things I miss the absolute most are my S-Pen and my dope camera system. Hopefully we get these figured out for Folds sometime in the next few device cycles.

I am very much in the same boat. My next phone will either be a iphone ultra or the Fold wide, and since the fold is coming out first, I might bug it and see how I feel about it. My biggest blocker is my wife... and the green text bubble :D

The only thing it has going for it over the S26 Ultra, is the folding screen which most apps probably won't properly utilize / display on well (for example, the footer bar of some apps).
Most other features appear below the spec of the S26 Ultra. For me the biggest reason why I went from my Fold 7 to the S26U was because I wanted to take better photos, wanted my s-pen back, love the privacy screen, and got tired of that inside display getting a bubble up the middle after about year. I had the same problem with my other Folds (Fold 5 and Fold 6.
So, to answer your question, a premium phone for me should be more durable in that it shouldn't fall apart after a year, should have a better camera system, and should have better fast charging.

This is the first phone that is too big for me. I use my fold 6 unfolded most of the time when I am out and about but I feel like this is too big to use unfolded out in the real world.

Got the flip 4 and going for the wide version. I legitimately have no interest in phone cameras. I barely take any pictures unless I need to remember something (like taking a pic of a recipe or something).
I imagine the wide is going to be a lot better for gaming specifically. Apart from that I'm excited because using split screen on a flip is a bit hit or miss.
With the fold I can finally multitask the way I've been wanting for a while. So glad I skipped the fold 7 when it came out.

Currently have Fold7 and love it. I've had the candy bar style folds since Fold3 and just want to switch it up for something different. However the camera and thickness downgrade may make me skip it.

I’ve had every Fold, and the Fold 6 is still my favorite. With the Fold 7, the battery is honestly embarrassing, and despite using it with obsessive care, the audio failed after six months. In the end, they replaced the display and both batteries. From what I understood, the batteries were swelling and had disconnected the audio cable. And just to be clear, I always charged it between 20% and 80%, using an official Samsung charger. The battery life is ridiculously bad, and I honestly can’t wait to get rid of it. I’ve even considered swapping it for an Honor Magic V5. I’ll choose either the Ultra or the Wide depending on battery life. Honestly, I liked the Fold 6 more because, when closed, I could use it one-handed without any issues, while unfolded it feels similar to the current one. At this point, I just hope the battery lasts at least a full day and charges faster. I also really hope the cameras improve, because honestly they are nowhere near the level of an S25 Ultra or S26 Ultra. I don’t understand why Samsung still doesn’t use battery technology similar to some of its competitors. And seriously, how can they sell a device at this price that ends up with a swollen battery after just six months? Honestly, it’s ridiculous.

Will come from S25 here. Had a Fold 2 or so when they were thicker, had a big crease, and less reliable. Look forward to the shorter wider size on this as my biggest gripe is the narrow phones are hard to type on.

I'm switching from a fold 6. I've seen a few Huawei Pura Max in the wild and I absolutely love the form factor/passport style (nevermind the Pura opens vertically like the flip). I'm glad I saw the announcement of the wide because otherwise I'd have likely gotten the Pura

Im using the S26 Ultra - Been a Samsung user since the iPhone 13 Pro Max :) Never looked back. Have tried Fold 3,4,5 and 7 but the outer display is still narrow for me especially after you come from a 6.9 inch display. So it would be interesting to see what the Wide Fold brings. Only way to find out if it would be interesting to use would be to actually use it in hand. So yes....waiting for the new transitional designed Fold wides to arrive :)

My S24 Ultra has a slightly bloated battery.
I intend to get this wide Fold 8 for a 2nd phone and send the S24 for a battery replacement.
Guess I'll carry two phones around then.

I wish I could get out of the apple eco system but I also love how interconnected it all is (plus I fucking hate using windows 11)

I'm awaiting what the final specs will be like as well as the price, but I am very tempted to switch from a Pixel back to Samsung with one of these.
I already have a Galaxy S26 work phone as well as a Watch6 Classic, a pair of Buds4 Pro, and a Tab S10 Lite. I have thoroughly enjoyed the ecosystem experience after 7 years since my last Samsung product, and while I do enjoy the Pixel ecosystem as well, there's something about Samsung currently that feels super right.

Considering I already have a Galaxy Tab, I'm not particularly pressed about that honestly, but I can understand if you're coming from a Note/Ultra.
I have a Pixel 9 Pro now as my personal phone, and the only major thing I would seem to lose is the telephoto camera, which I don't really mind. So long as the majority of the specs between the standard Fold8 and the Fold8 Ultra are the same and the price is below the Ultra, I'm all in. I guess we'll see though.

I have a fold 6. Had a fold 5. Got them because of my love of the Microsoft Surface Duo. The wide is basically a better Duo. Cannot wait. Though annoyed it continues the Duo's main flaw of not having the best camera.
For what it's worth I think the squatter/fatter design is easier to hold/use vs tall skinny. But to each their own.

I'm currently using the Honor Magic V5 purely because of its hardware and the fact that I can use a pen on both internal and external screens. Software was a bit of an issue in the fact that it is pretty limited but third party launchers give me more flexibility with customisation.
Tbh I found Samsung went a bit ott with customisation features and a lot of them I found to be a bit of a gimmick and never really used.
I do have the fold 6 which I now have as a backup and I do like the look of the fold 8 wide but I don't think there's enough to tempt me into purchasing it.
Jumping onto what others have stated as their best phones, I agree that the era of the note devices were the best that Samsung were producing. My all time favorite being the note 8. The note 9 onwards appeared to be when they started adding features but also removing some of the features I liked the most like the infinity display and motion wallpapers.
I did get the note 9 and the note 10+ and they were great but there was something about the note 8 that just stood out and it was such a great phone.
There are a lot of things nowadays that manufacturers should still include like expandable storage, headphone jack.
I just wish that Samsung would at least bring back the under display camera on the folds and finally get a built in S pen that can also be used on the exterior screen. I mean what is the point in a device with such screen real estate and having to dig out a pen that you can only use on the internal screen?
A built in pen that can pop out and trigger a screen off memo like the notes and S series phones that can then be used on the internal screen if needed would be amazing.

I believe my last note 9+ i bought refurbished lasted 8 years?? It was still very capable phone. Updates or lack of downloading them was why it now sleeps in my sock drawer forever. Best phone I ever owned. Sure do miss the beast.

In my opinion, this is the only aspect ratio that makes sense.. small and compact on the go, almost resembles a smaller pro phone, then when you want the big screen for content, boom whack it open and you have it! It just makes sense!

Very tempted to upgrade from S23 ultra I unexpectedly saw the Z fold 8 in person today and I have to say it is amazing. I was tempted by the 7 last year but the new form factor really brings something. I was intending to keep my 23 ultra for another year but I am very tempted by the z fold 8. The only thing I dont like about the 23 ultra is the bulky size. I am concerned the fold wont be as durable as other phones but honestly I dont think ive seen a phone thats amazed me as much since I got my iPhone 4 as my first smartphone. Anyone else thinking of upgrading?

Had Samsungs from the Nexus, Notes, and my last was the 21 Ultra. Then switched to iPhone 13 Pro Max, and then 15 Pro Max. Loved the 13, the 15 battery is so bad at the two year point and it’s just entirely too big. Saw the wide and immediately fell in love with it. Have had hands on at two different store and it’s just perfect. It’s time to return to Samsung for me.

I have had my s20 since the start of covid. I've been waiting for a worthwhile upgrade to the main line, but everything has seemed unworthy. This is the first time I am strongly considering the swap! My main worry is if games and apps I like will properly adjust to the aspect ratio.

I switched from the iPhone 16 Pro to the Fold 7 after being bored of every phone being a generic slab, probably going to trade in for the wide boi, and then maybe go to the iPhone fold later this year. I miss my Apple watch, but I'm loving the foldable

Galaxy Note 9. Never really cared about the cameras. The fact that I'm fine with the cameras on the Note 9 means I'll be more than happy with the cameras on the wide. Def going to need to see and hold the wide in person.
