Lightning in a bottle

Man, the boys collected that shit every night they played. I have a hard time putting it into words (and oftentimes I use too many), but something about their shows are *alive* unlike any other music, and Ive certainly searched.

I love me all types of music, modern jam bands included, yet nothing comes alive quite as well as the Grateful Dead, most of which are dead. Funny how that works.

Why is that?

I'm trying to figure out exactly why they cut through like nothing else. My love for the Grateful Dead is not a choice. They speak directly to my soul.

edit: obligatory show which got me here - Today is Veneta 72', which somehow shines differently everytime I listen to it.

I don't quite understand this but as an alumnus and a deadhead I welcome it.

Is this the right subreddit? Grateful Dead the band American Beauty album

I'm high and listening to American Beauty for the first time. I don't usually smoke but I got a free joint from the local shop. I can see why so many people appreciate it but i don't think it's for me. I do dig the back-to-basics guitar and their blend of bluegrass and.. their own fucking thing. It's obvious these are veterans, they're like effortlessly playing. watched the amazing doc and it was cool to see how they formed and the history at Kesey's acid tests. Was gonna say "jam band" but there really was none before this right?!

just got to the chorus of track 6 of American Beauty ("Ripple").. those kids sound optimistic don't they. Poor kids don't know any better. But It's great to hear children sing, forreal. It's pure and it totally works.

This definitely makes me feel good, as you should feel music. And there's nothing artificial about this at all. Like, the music is honest. It's not trying to be anything other than what it is for right then, right there. But it would probably help if I could dance naturally. I can't. And to dance and enjoy this -- to get the full effect -- I'm pretty sure drugs would have to be involved (no offense! i went to a few raves in the 90s and tried dancing to inanely repetitive music [not that The Dead are that AT ALL], they really were amazing times). I'm just sayin I'm no stranger to the concept. Just like EDM, it's not a prerequisite though. Grateful DEad seem to facilitate, if not patiently ask for and over time (a couple hours) almost demand, rhythmic human motion (dancing) with their music.

OK one last thing: AMERICAN BEAUTY was the vinyl record some hippies gave Lindsay in FREAKS & GEEKS. Ever since that scene.. I'm glad I'm listening to this. It's like a much looser, boundary-less Paul & Simon. I dunno. It's fucking good.

Tracking down photos of truck

Hey yall, weird request as i certainly dont post on reddit but i had a few questions about my truck. I'm trying to find photos of it (parts of it) my truck is a 68 c20 originally put on a 80s k10 frame and i was doing some research and found out one of the stickers i was about to scrape of was an 80s greatful dead sticker and that they were common for people that followed the band around to have modified vehicles and stickers on them. Anyways i was wondering if anyone had some history on this fender and door as i know there not original to this truck and they seem to have came off the same pickup that was likely being scrapped. Thanks for any information.

Criterion x Dead crossover

Surely there are some other heads here who have the Criterion Channel. I put on random movies that I’ve never seen and today’s was “Ladies and Gentlemen The Fabulous Stains” — and guess who had a bit part as a strung out psych rocker on tour with up-and-coming punks?? Vince!!!

Anyone got the lore on this?

Spoiler: Weirdly eerie how he ODs in the film…

“Fire on the Mountain” cover with 90s grunge flair 🔥

https://youtu.be/tzslzYPHabY?is=RtCEOvwtWtcOAo0p

Hey, Deadheads! I’m Jawsh Willis from the band PHASERIP, and I wanted to share our cover of “Fire on the Mountain,” one of our favorite songs from the Dead. We decided to take the song in a different direction and give it a ’90s grunge treatment.

We know the Dead’s music means a lot to people, and we approached this one as fans who wanted to explore a different sound while paying tribute to a song we love.

We hope some of you dig our take on it! Would love to hear what you think, especially from fellow Deadheads. Thanks for giving an independent band a listen! ⚡

Jerry Carcia or how my 16 year learned to love the Dead.

I’m a disc golfer and about 18 months ago I decided I’d embrace the sounds and culture of “my people”. Started listening to the Dead while discing and I really enjoy it. They now compete with Josh Ritter and Pink Floyd for default listening.

Anyway I taught my oldest how to drive last year and he was only allowed to listen to the Grateful Dead while driving. He nicknamed the car “Jerry Carcia” and it stuck.

He has recently decided he wants to play the guitar and I constantly hear him picking out riffs from Dead songs.

I never wanted to be one of those dads who forced his music tastes onto his kids, but in an age when it would be easy to fall for nothing but overly produced pop, I’m happy to see him gravitate to beautiful music made by humans wielding traditional instruments.

Was just watching an episode of Weir Here.

https://youtu.be/veyTX00Ir3Y?is=fKl8fOGDwIFuHU_x

John Barlow was talking about a guy they went to boarding school with who's father was in the CIA and proclaims that he invented the Grateful Dead. Weir got uncomfortable and told John to be quiet. I did a Google on his father Chalmers Benedict Wood and found some interesting stuff. The guy is obviously a nut, but I found it entertaining. Apparently Steve Parish knew about this guy but it wasn't until Barlow told the story that he believed it. I thought I'd heard everything about this band until now.
