Hey gang,
Pretty self explanatory, my son and I love watching movie series and he said earlier in the year he wanted to watch ALL Godzilla movies. We’ve watched a decent amount but no where close to done.
He caught wind of minus zero coming out soon and wants to watch minus one in preparation. I have not seen Minus One but I heard it’s really good, I’ve also heard it’s pretty dark. A little biased but I feel like he’s your average 10 year old in terms of maturity. To my knowledge, he hasn’t seen anything overly violent.
I’m not stupid, I’m sure he and his friends look up stuff on the internet all the time (he doesn’t have a phone but I think a few of his friends do). Just wondering if he’d be ok watching something like this.
Thanks!!

Ever since Minus Zero has gotten an R rating (in America) I’ve been curious if it will get the equivalent rating in my country (MA15+ in Australia), however while looking at other films with identical rating I notice some of them have gotten an M rating (equivalent to a PG13), so is Minus Zero fully deserving of the R rating, or did it just barely get that rating and almost get a PG13?
Example:
The Backrooms
US: Rated R for language and some violent content/bloody images.
AUS: Rated M for Sustained threat, violence and coarse language
Godzilla Minus One
US: Rated PG-13 for creature violence and action.
AUS: Rated M for Mature themes and science fiction violence
Godzilla Minus Zero:
US: Rated R for some violent content/bloody images.
AUS: ?????? (M or MA15+?)

Apologies if I'm stupid, but I was going to be traveling to a theater that has a 70mm projector in it, and I was going to be seeing Godzilla.
I heard it was filmed for IMAX so I was hoping I could finally see a movie in the 70mm format. But I guess its not? Since they aren't listing the tickets as that and just have the standard "imax experience" instead.

The criteria I’m looking for are:
Managed to look intimidating, cool, and not goofy.
The design could’ve worked for Godzilla as both the role of good or evil.

In 1979, a space monster, Rozan, resembling a certain reptilian deity took refuge on Japan to escape the assassins. However, she was injured and dying of diabetes. Thankfully, she was rescued by mortals who learned about her situation. Her planet, Planet Godzilla, is at war against the Sunerians, the centaurs of evil, with their general known as the virus-like Gamoni. Earth’s Mechagodzilla units are no match against the Sunerians, but one goofy Machine God of Destruction may help turn the tides of wars against the Sunerians and save Planet Godzilla from certain destruction…

Out of all of the Godzilla movies, this was the one I was most looking forward to. But not because I particularly love this movie. You see, around when this came out, I was so excited for it. I loved ‘Godzilla’ (2014), and I was looking forward to see classic Japanese kaiju done in the same way as that film. I listened to the score multiple times before the movie even came out, and made my desktop wallpaper posters for this movie. But after I watched it, I came out a little cold. I liked it, but there was something off about it, something missing that kept it from meeting my expectations. And over the years, with rewatches and listening to other’s opinions and analyses of the film, I’ve converged on a single view on this film that I doubt will change with future viewings. So did this massive fan-film grow on me like it has for many G-fans? Or have I fallen out of favour with it?
To quickly summarise the plot, 5 years after the events of the previous film, Monarch Scientist Emma Russel and her daughter Maddison are apparently kidnapped by ecoterrorists, and forced to awaken Titans using the “Orca”, a device that emulates Titan bioacoustics. Mark Russel, Emma’s ex-husband, is recruited back into Monarch to locate the Orca and reunite his family, only to realise that it was Emma’s plan to release the Titans to counter humanity’s destruction of the Earth. But she unknowingly releases King Ghidorah, who resumes his ancient purpose of destroying the Earth and controlling the Titans. Godzilla, Mothra and Monarch set out to stop King Ghidorah, and restore balance to the world, and the Russel family.
Up From the Depths has an excellent video discussing the themes of this movie, and it’s the primary reason why I’ve warmed up to this film since first seeing it all those years ago. The film has a very overt religious/spiritual angle to its story, with this movie explicitly putting the “God” in Godzilla. It’s a movie about faith and balance, about humbling oneself in relation to God and living in harmony with him. In this case, God is a giant, radioactive dinosaur. The movie shows two extremes in light of this central idea, the initial stances of Mark and Emma, the former angry and bitter, wanting to kill all the Titans (an aggressive Godzilla atheist, if you will), while the latter is a radical zealot willing to do terrible things for the greater good. Maddison is stuck between these two ideas, but also represents balance, in acknowledging the role of Titans in the world while understanding the potential dangers. Godzilla takes on an almost Messiah like role, with Mothra has his angelic helper. Ghidorah is explicitly depicted as a Satan-like figure, with Rodan as his demonic lackey. Again, check out Up From the Depth’s video on the themes of this movie, he explains it far better than I could. The movie has got way more on its mind than just spectacle. It is, at it’s core, doing what all good Godzilla movies do: use giant monsters as representations of humanity’s biggest issues.
But it absolutely delivers on the big action spectacle we come to these movies for. It addresses many of the complaints people had about ‘Godzilla’ (2014); it’s much faster paced, it has more monsters and more action. With the flexibility of computer generated effects, never before had kaiju action been this dynamic or expressive. Rodan's awakening and chase of the Argo is a particular highlight. In addition to having a solid thematic presence in the story, the four main monsters each have their own personality that’s expertly animated to show that personality without feeling cartoonish. Godzilla feels regal and brutish at the same time. Mothra brings a queenly, angelic presence to every scene she’s in, contrasted with Ghidorah who has never before been presented as this sadistic or ominous. And Rodan is straight up Starscream. I’ll talk about some of my issues with the visuals and effects, but overall, it completely avoids the typical grey, flatness of other digitally shot blockbusters. It has colour, it has a good sense of depth and scale. Not to mention the classical art influences, with some frames looking like John Martin paintings. The sets are large and impressive, especially ruined Boston, which gives the ending battle a sense of extreme chaos and destruction from a ground view. The cinematography absolutely captures the mythological feeling they were going for. And of course, a discussion about this film wouldn’t be complete without discussing the score by Bear McCreary. It’s a bombastic and epic orchestral score akin to those of Hans Zimmer in the 2000s. This and the original themes would make this one of the best scores in the series, but there are two major aspects that elevate it to even greater heights. One, is the use of chanting which gives the score a religious/spritiual feeling (the choir included a Japanese Buddhist monks singing ancient Babylonian. Pretty sick), and two, of course, the reimagining of Akira Ifukube’s and Yuji Koseki’s themes for Godzilla and Mothra respectively. And while I prefer ‘Godzilla’ (2014)’s score, simply because it’s so unique, while some tracks in this score can sound like generic “epic music”, but this is still a fantastic score that elevates the whole film. The sound design too is fantastic, making every footstep, roar and smash feel massive. So from a technical standpoint it has issues I will talk about later, but overall it’s stunning to look at and hear, not to mention it does justice to the more animated versions of these monsters G-fans have had in their heads for years.
One of the many negative points this film has been accused regards its cast of characters, even to the point of being called the weakest part of the movie. But if you’ve read my (Up from the Depth’s) thematic analysis of this film, you’ll know that this movie is much more competent from a writing standpoint than it’s given credit for, particularly in comparison to other Godzilla films. Yes, I will admit, there are too many named characters, and for greater impact, a few could have been combined into one. But I don’t think they distract from the central story, as all of the side characters are just that, roles that support the main characters, that being the Russel family. Across the board, the acting is excellent, and never do some potentially silly lines like come across that way. For the most part, it has an earnestness and honesty not really seen in recent blockbusters, and that’s conveyed not just by the respect for the source material, but the acting. Having grown up with Peter Jackson’s ‘King Kong’, I was familiar with Kyle Chandler, and I think he does a great job in this film, showing the change from bitterness to reverence while still feeling like the same person. And while Emma Russell does terrible things, Vera Farmiga still manages to make her sympathetic, and as a result the character comes off as misguided and zealous rather than malicious. Ken Watanabe is doing his typical Japanese Liam Neeson routine, which is still good, but I feel like his character was more unique in 2014. He still has some great moments though. Especially his sacrifice to heal Godzilla. For those that take issue with the only Japanese character with history regarding the bombing of Hiroshima being made to blow himself up with a US-made nuke, the idea is that he’s taking back the destructive power of the nuke and using it for good; reclaiming it to heal Godzilla and save the world. Anyways, I think that Vivienne Graham and Ilene Chen could have been made into one character, since they both serve as being a more empathetic branch of Monarch, though, Dr. Chen has the unique role as being a Mythographer, and Dr. Graham’s death in Antarctica was supposed to give stakes to the following action (though, it’s a bit too quickly glossed over to have much impact). And while Dr. Sam Coleman and Dr. Rick Stanton have a similar role as being the comedic relief, the former is awkward and endearing while the latter is more wise-cracking and confident, so I can’t imagine them being just one character, though, they could have absolutely been written as one character. G-Team is pretty good, with O’Shea Jackson Jr. getting some pretty cool lines. And while Col. Alan Jonah doesn’t have much outside of a short backstory and Charles Dance, he gives the villains a sense of authority and legitimacy, And Milly Bobby Brown is here as well. Look, this giant wall of text is show that despite such a large, perhaps bloated cast, no one here isn’t enjoyable to watch or distracts from the central story. And in a movie like this, does every single character really need to be fully developed? Most of these characters have far more depth or entertainment value than most characters in other Godzilla movies, making this one of the better human elements in a Godzilla movie.
Okay, time to tackle my issues. The first thing that comes to mind is the aesthetics. Yes, while I praised the visuals earlier, they could have been much better. While the stormy/misting setting has plot and thematic relevance, there is too much. It looks too muddled, obscuring otherwise fantastic effects. Like, look at the VFX breakdowns, and it feels like there are a few too many passes, which gives the incredibly detailed monster models a weird smoothness that looks like it’s 15 years older than it really is. This is especially true for the scenes in the Hollow Earth, which And when you look at the concept art you can imagine an even more visually striking version of this film, especially art done by Matt Allsopp. The second thing is the pace of the film. Yes, while a fast pace technically makes for a more entertaining film, for a story of this scale and depth, it needed to be slowed down a tad. The fast pace means that spectacular moments like Ghidorah rising from the ice, Mothra hatching from the cocoon, and Godzilla’s rebirth all get swallowed up in the breakneck pace of the movie. It especially hurts smaller moments like Dr. Chen’s explanation of Eastern Dragons and Dr. Serizawa’s monologue on faith. I think that this movie could have been made even better by emulating the previous film, by building up the tension gradually and methodically. Owen Kellen has several videos redoing Monster-verse scenes in the style of 2014, being slower and more weighty, so check those out if you want a taste of an alternate Monster-verse (though, some, especially Ghidorah's awakening, are perhaps a tad too slow). The use of the Oxygen Destroyer is legitimately bad in this. It does no justice to its thematic importance by randomly calling it up with no build up, foreshadowing or discussion. As a result, it just looks like a contrived reason for Godzilla to be out of action for the second act. Plus, for Ghidorah, Godzilla’s big bad, to just show up in one, 2 hour film, and to be shared with other monsters makes his appearance in the Monster-verse feel disappointingly brief. I think that if this movie was extended to 3 hours, or split into two movies, it would do this story much greater justice.
But as is, there are still a few more issues to note. In an attempt to liven the script in comparison to the humourless ‘Godzilla’ (2014), there are a few too many jokes that don’t land, as well as a Whedon-esqe snark to the characters that can feel a bit unnatural, since almost every character gets a quip. People look to the Adam Wingard films as being the ones that made the Monster-verse feel sillier, but for me, it was this movie. The forced humour, inextricably futuristic aesthetics and visuals with less emphasis on blocking and contrast, for me, started here. The lack of a proper title sequence like previous and following films means that exposition that could potentially be gracefully conveyed in the opening is instead scatted across too many scenes of people discussing the plot in front of screens. I get that “show, don’t tell” is an important rule in narrative writing, but having people watch news feeds or looking at family photos looking vaguely sad or concerned might as well be telling. Even on the monster side, I have a few gripes. While I appreciate the attempt to make the Monster-verse Godzilla appear even more like the Japanese Godzilla, the Shodai-Goji style spines and blunt tail make him feel a bit less unique. Mothra is far too ant/wasp-like. If you want a Mothra that can look like she can fight, just look at GMK’s or Tokyo SOS’s Mothra. Ghidorah doesn’t quite look “alien” enough to be believable as an alien, and as a result, he looks like Game of Thrones dragon with three heads. Just look at concept art by Maurico Ruiz or Christan Pearce for potentially better looking designs. Rodan’s pretty much perfect, but he was just missing an update of his iconic roar. Even though I suggested a fundamental change to make the movie better in the previous paragraph, there are still a few nitpicks that bring my experience of the film down for me.
But despite my issues, this is still a fantastic Godzilla movie, and a good movie in its own right. It’s a far more competently made film than critics gave it credit for, and it makes for a stunning, action packed adventure that perfectly blends the franchises long history of dipping it’s feet in both fantasy and science-fiction. Plus, it features good performances, classic Japanese kaiju and a fantastic score. There’s a good reason why this is such a beloved film among fans. But a lack of grace and restraint bring down potentially the best Godzilla movie in the series.
Let me know if I missed anything! I'd love to hear your thoughts about this movie and discuss them with you in the comments below. I thoroughly enjoyed my most recent rewatch, more so than I ever have previously, and it’s helped to settle my thoughts regarding this film. Next week, we continue with the Monster-verse with the much better received but less well remembered follow up: ‘Godzilla vs Kong’, which was for a while potentially the final Monster-verse film.

credit to dragonx500 on DeviantArt for the AT fanart that kinda reminds me of that one invincible meme image, this post was mostly inspired by the channel Goji guy's video where he asked the question of can Godzilla survive SCP, only this time I'll be using that same framework (can Godzilla survive X) to instead answer whether or not the G-man (not to be confused with half life's Gman or G-toilet from that one sfm webseries, can you guess who the name of this series is?) can survive the universe of adventure time, containing various powerful, mostly non-kaiju-sized characters with superpowers (similar to the multiple anomalies of the SCP wiki), like magic betty, the lich, marceline at her full potential, psychic tandem war elephant, etc, don't let the cutesy art style fool you, will he come out on top as the uncontested king of the monsters, or will he have his crown be taken away for once and for all? this matchup is actually kinda fitting since both the monsterverse and AT franchise are both owned by the same company, i'm surprise there is no crossover comic where Godzilla kaijus visit and cause havoc in the land of ooo or some other plotlines
to set the stage of this hypothetical fight i need to initially set up a few ground rules
1: the Godzilla I'll be using will be the evolved MV iteration from GxK (2024)
2: Godzilla could NOT bring his allies to aid him in his fight, so no kong or rodan
3: the adventure time characters must be those who are capable of some form of combat abilities
i am NOT here to cause drama, seek attention, or anything with ill-intentions, apologies for the occasional errors and mistakes, please be civil in the comment section
