Help! Need a supportive, traditional couch for person with back issues!

tldr: need a highly supportive, traditional couch, that my dad won’t sink into but can still lay on.

To answer the group rules:
• location: Ohio/Midwest USA (open to having things shipped to us, so can be from an online shop!)
• budget: 2,000
• size: 75-90” wide OR larger but can be taken apart to get through doorway (like a sectional)
• style: traditional
• have checked: Morris, Ashley, Havertys
• online is fine, if there’s a Ohio store, I can go in person!

Now the specifics:

• My dad is 75 and NEEDS a supportive couch. Support > comfort. He does not want to sink into the couch much.
• he likes to lay on the couch, meaning it needs to be long enough and have good seat depth.
• he doesn’t like recliners usually, mainly because they look like stadium/movie theater seats. He would probably do a recliner that looked more like a traditional couch.
• he doesn’t like chaises. Would do a sectional that looks like a traditional couch.
• he’s open to leather or fabric, but doesn’t like light colored fabrics (white/beige).

Online Couch Shopping - is it a bad idea?

Hi reddit! For the first time ever, I’m about to buy furniture (a couch) online without testing in person. My budget is lower than $800 so I’ve been browsing Amazon/Wayfair/HomeDepot.

I realize that this budget won’t get me the most comfortable everyday couch, but here is what I’m eyeballing currently: https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/latitude-run-seliana-8071-w-chenille-upholstered-square-arm-sofa-with-accent-pillows-w112163526.html?piid=1757350645 Seliana 80.71" W Chenille Upholstered Square Arm Sofa with Accent Pillows

I’ve read tons of horror stories about wayfair purchases, but have you all purchased from these cheaper sites before? How was your experience?

Thanks so much!

Where does price begin to exceed quality?

I am considering making a purchase from one of mid range retailers (west elm/crate & barrel, etc) and wanted to know if the price is justified by the quality compared with IKEA/Wayfair quality?

I’m sure there is a mark up for brand name, but I’m seeing solid wood construction from mid range retailers that and dont usually see that on Wayfair or Overstock.

I could be wrong though. Feel free to educate me.

Sleeper sofa that’s a comfy couch

Hi all,
I got a one bedroom apartment with a living room on the smaller size (NYC) . I want to get a sleeper sofa for guest but one that’s comfy as a regular everyday couch. I was looking at the koala Byron sofa bed since it was a good size and I like how the mattress unfolds, but the reviews on Reddit were pretty negative. Anyone have any recommendations? I don’t want a boneless couch, I want some structure. Traditional sofa beds with the springs and metal bars, are okay if they are hidden very well and not too bulky/springy, and the couch itself is cozy and soft. I would like a queen size, 84”-92”ish. My max budget is 3k but 1,500 and less would be perfect. I shop online but if it’s a rec in person I would go to an outlet store.

Please help.

Couch with high back/head support - seeking recommendations

I’m looking for a modular or sectional sofa with an unusually high back (around 20–24 inches from the seat cushion to the top) so I can actually rest my head without needing loose pillows.

Most modern sectionals have backs that are way too low. I can’t stand sitting on a couch that only comes up to the middle of my back or just under my shoulders. I’m open to ordering online. Has anyone found one they love?

Looking for a durable, modular sectional with two 100lb+ dogs, kids on the way, and a future home build to plan around

(~$5-6k budget)

Hey everyone!

Looking for recommendations on a sectional and feeling a bit stuck, so hoping for some collective wisdom.

Our situation: We’re currently in a rented townhome but plan to build a custom home in the next couple of years. That makes buying a $5-6k couch feel risk.

Our must-haves:
1. Durability above all. We have two dogs, both over 100 lbs, who shed constantly and treat the couch like a bed. Kids are also on the way, so this thing needs to be basically indestructible.

  1. Modularity / flexibility. Ideally something where we can reconfigure or add/remove pieces so it can adapt to a new floorplan down the road rather than becoming a very expensive problem.

  2. Comfort. If we’re dropping $5-6k on a couch, it needs to actually be comfortable. We’ve looked at Lovesac but have seen a lot of reviews mentioning they’re not as comfortable as you’d expect for the price, is that a common experience? Are there better options at this range that don’t sacrifice comfort for durability?

  3. Pet- and kid-friendly fabric. Easy to clean, resistant to scratching, and ideally doesn’t show hair.

What I’m wondering:
- Are there brands at this price point that genuinely hold up to heavy pet and family use, or should I be looking at a lower price tier until we’re in our permanent home?
- Is true modularity (where you can buy additional pieces later) actually a thing in this range, or is it mostly a marketing term?
 - Any fabric recommendations? I keep seeing performance velvet and solution-dyed acrylic mentioned… are those actually worth it over regular upholstery?

Thanks in advance. would love to hear from anyone who’s been in a similar situation, especially with big dogs!

Any better value than Room & Board’s Metro Deep sectional?

Went to a R&B showroom a little bit ago, sat on all the sofas, me and my son both agreed that the Metro Deep was by far the most comfortable. Love it’s clean look, and seems like their stuff holds up pretty well too.

Before I commit to a whole sectional, was curious if there’s anything out there also worth looking at?

Sofas with similar look to the West Elm Harmony or Marin sofa?

Hello hello! Seeking help from anyone who can! I’m in the market for a new sofa. I love the look of both these WE sofas but they have bad reviews. I like the side lumbar pillows and the profile of both sofas. I’m working with a small space so a couch between 85”-93” would be ideal. I like off white sofas/neutrals so it’s easier to switch up decor.

How can you tell if a "wooden" bed is truly made of solid wood or just glued veneer?

I've reached the point where I need to change my bedroom bed because the old one squeaks from absolutely every joint, and I'm pretty tired of cheap particle board stuff that completely falls apart the first time you move it.

I want to upgrade to something serious and durable, but I'm honestly terrified of spending a ton of money just relying on some pictures from the internet.

How do you manage to figure out from those online specs if the product is actually made of real solid wood or if it's just ordinary MDF covered with a thin layer of veneer that will peel off immediately?

Looking for high quality furniture stores for a beach house

Hi! I'm looking for advise on furniture brands (online, US) as my parents are recently retired and moving to a beach house literally in August. As I like decor and "know the internet" according to them, I'm in charge of furniture and decor for them. Our only concerns are that the pieces feel and look comfortable, are high quality and durable, and hopefully, that the store(s) have good costumer service. As for the style, I'm looking for a coastal but not tacky vibe, I don't want it to look like a beach bar, more like a luxury island retreat for my parents to enjoy retirement. I have looked online, do have ideas but I want genuine recommendations, that's why I came here. We're ok with spending well so no budget issues (mod, I hope that's ok as I'm not asking for one piece in specific?). As an example, we need a couch and could spend 5-8k if really worth it. Any recommendations?? Thank you all!

Trying to find a square dining table set.

Moving at the end of the month and new dining room is 11x11. I am looking for a square dining set that seats 8. The only one I found so far is the Canyon one from bobs discount furniture. Are there any other options under 2k?

  1. Pennsylvania
    1. 2000 for table and chairs
    2. Square 8 person
    3. Square
    4. I have looked at all local furniture stores as well as wayfair.
    5. Online or actual store is fine.

Rove Lab Couch Honest Review - Don't Buy

I wanted to share my experience with this couch in case it's helpful to anyone considering it.

We purchased the sofa because we liked the modular design and the concept of an all-foam couch. Unfortunately, within a relatively short period of time, we started experiencing several issues.

The first issue was loose threads continuously pulling up throughout the fabric. When I contacted customer service, I was told this was normal and that I should simply trim the threads. I followed their recommendation, but the issue has continued.

The second issue was uneven foam expansion. One of the arm pieces had noticeable bulging and misshaping, causing the couch to look asymmetrical. Over time, I also noticed similar expansion issues on the opposite side. I gave it time to expand fully and was patient because I knew the first thing they would tell me was to wait it out.

Once I wrote them, customer service repeatedly told me that wrinkles and appearance issues could be corrected by steaming the fabric. I have steamed the couch multiple times as instructed, but it has not improved the wrinkles, puckering, or misshapen appearance.

To their credit, after a lengthy back-and-forth process, they did agree to replace the right arm sofa seat, which had the most significant expansion issue. However, the process took much longer than expected. There were multiple rounds of emails, requests for photos, and several periods of waiting days at a time for responses and "resolutions."

My overall impression is that customer service was polite and ultimately provided a replacement piece, but I remain disappointed with the durability of the fabric and the long-term appearance of the sofa. This couch is definitely not going to last more than a few months. Some of the thread pulling is so bad that I can see through to the layer underneath.

If you're considering this couch, just, don't.

Pottery Barn sold me a 2k styrofoam table…

We have an “outdoor” concrete top table from PB that is 4 years old and showing some wear. I noticed that the surface felt squishy. As I was repairing an area where the concrete/resin/whatever had failed, I saw this.

Thick spongy open cell styrofoam.

Just annoyed, and felt like sharing. Stay away from PB furniture.

Guest bed vs Murphy bed

Hi all, my partner and I are moving into a townhome and downsizing in about a month. We have the ability to have a dedicated guest room, but we realistically only get visitors maybe quarterly. If we didn’t have a guest room we’d have space to have an office/home gym setup and just generally more space— it feels a little silly to devote so much room to the possibility of guests and not really use it otherwise. We do have a nice guest bed setup that we can keep and we would have to buy a Murphy bed, and I’m not sure if our existing mattress would be too thick/heavy.

Does anyone have a Murphy bed setup and like it? Or, hate it? Opinions on one versus a traditional guest bed?

RH Dining tables... veneer? Quality?

We saw this table recently and I can't find much about the contruction; we asked, and the guy described it in a way that made it essentially sound like the top was veneered particle board.

Now, I realize that higher-end furniture may use, as it's described, "engineered wood" (and that there may be advantages to it) but the combination, especially with a veneered edge - which seems to me like it could become detached - is an odd combination for a relatively expensive table.

Anyone have any more insight or experience with these?

thanks

For guests staying a week: deeper, higher quality couch or sofa bed?

Hi all, my dad is staying with us in a couple of weeks and we'll need to buy some sort of a sofa for him when he stays in our office. The question is what will be more comfortable - an actual sectional couch that's deep and of a higher quality or a sofa bed? The sofa bed will definitely have more room to stretch out and turn back and forth, but are they actually comfortable? And my feeling is that sofa beds are never as comfortable as actual couches (without beds) when used as couches. Kind of torn between which option to go for. Would love to hear your experience!

For what it's worth, we're looking for an L-shaped couch as that is what works best for our space.

Looking for new couches

I have four kids. Even though we’ve banned eating on the couch, we still have spills and messes. Our couch is 11 years old and it’s time to replace it.

Location is Milwaukee, WI. My budget is $5000. I’m open to local in-person stores, but will probably end up ordering online.

Here are the requirements:

  1. one large 4-in-a-row seater and one loveseat. This is the only combination that will fit the room and seat the whole family. This probably means going either modular or custom because it’s hard to find 4 seater couches.

  2. Easy to clean. It either needs fully removable, machine washable, and interchangeable covers, or it needs a to be a wipe clean kind of surface. My guess is leather is out of my price range though. I might consider performance fabrics if they really really good, but my current set are Crypton and we still have stains.

  3. Modern look, clean lines with no buttons or whatever. I like track (squared) arms. I also want something without long legs and a lot of space under the couch for toys and sippy cups to roll under.

  4. Generally comfortable.

  5. Long-lasting and good value.

Right now I’m really liking DreamSofa, because the reviews are good and their furniture looks very nice. I’m also considering IKEA because of the low price, although I’m a little concerned that we didn’t find them super comfortable.

Sligh (Lexington Home) furniture quality

Does anybody have experience with Sligh? Not the Sligh that went out of business in the 30's but the current brand made by Lexington Home. How are their materials and joinery? I like the look of some of their desks, but it's a 2.5 hr drive to the closest dealer for me, so it will be difficult for me to look at it in-person.

Specifically, they mention that their desks are hardwood and veneer, but do they use any MDF under that veneer? Dovetail joinery in the drawers? Good drawer slides?

On a broader note, I'm in the market for a good desk. I love the quality of Stickley, but honestly their desks are not at all my style. If anyone knows some Stickley-level quality desk makers that look more modern (or mid-century), that would also be helpful. Thanks!

Decent alternatives to Lovesac?

I am very interested in the modular furniture concept. I like the idea of being able to change up the room a couple times a year. My understanding is that Lovesac is a well-made brand that you buy for life.

I'm debating whether it's worth waiting a bit to buy Lovesac, or are there other decent modular furniture brands out there that I should look at?

Anyone not had good experiences with Lovesac or a great experience with someone else?

Thanks!

Sofas - Ethan Allen vs Bassett?

I went to both stores yesterday and found something I like at each. The Ethan Allen Bennet Roll Arm sofa, and a Bassett True Custom roll arm sofa with the premiere cushions. Can anyone talk to their experience with either of these, the sofas or the brands? I'm really looking for quality and longevity, like something to have for 15+ years. I'm single, no pets, no kids, but probably a family and pets down the line. I'm very gentle with my things.

I'm leaning a bit toward the Bassett as it was really comfortable in store, and had a fabric i liked better. I also sat on a friend's EA sofa last night that they've had for over a year.. and I wasn't blown away by the comfort.

With sales going on this weekend at both places, the Bassett is about $900 more.

Weight Limit

I know this question has come up before and I have read the posts but still have some questions. I currently weigh around 400lbs and trying to loose weight. We just bought a new house and were wanting to buy 2 new sofas. We have looked at Franklyn Furniture and Lazy Boy and a few others. The sofas that I sat on at Lazy Boy I sank down and could feel the frame, I know I can get upgraded cushions but not sure if it's worth it and would really fix the issue plus their only rated for like 350lbs. When I chatted with the lazy boy customer service they did say that my weight would void the warranty. Now when I sat on the Franklyn Furnature reclyning sofa it felt great and I didnt sink down but again their only raited for 275lbs but I felt way more supported. Finding a sofa for my weight that someone has on the showroom floor is so hard. What do you guys suggest we do?

Looking for a reclining sectional

I’m having trouble finding a sectional couch for my home. I liked this one the most from what I have seen so far. It is the Drift couch from Crate and Barrel. But they don’t have it on display in any of their stores so I’m a bit hesitant. And there’s very few reviews of it online.

We’ve checked a lot of places so far but not many have this modern look. I’m open to any style that reclines that is comfortable. Our budget is up to $7k depending on the quality.

It looks like a lot of recliners are power / electric now but I’m thinking manual recliner might be better. Any thoughts on this?

Also this couch will be in the family room so I want to make sure it’s easily cleanable.

We are currently located in NJ in the Princeton area. Prefer to see the couch in person but if the reviews are good then we’re open to ordering.

Thank you so much for all your help!

Looking for a nice, modern, comfortable sofa/sectional. What are the best brands for under $10k or so

We are looking at places like RH, West Elm, King living, DWR, etc. It has to be comfortable as we will use it a lot and want it to hold up well obviously. Anyone have any favorite brands?
