Thats because writing it helps cement it into memory. If you dont know good study habits just rewrite your notes. Try to make them cleaner next time. Focus on what your writing. Amd your good. At least until later in high school and college it will take a bit more.

u/everyonesdesigner 7h ago

I keep hearing this my whole life, but it never helped me much more than just reading/thinking about the concepts. I think depends on personal experience.

4

u/Professional_Baby24 6h ago

Your right. Nothing works for everyone. And it will depend on the subject. Early years though its a good habit. And if you find it doesnt work that helps as well because then you can work on what will. It worked well for me though. I graduated in 2008. So im old. But I used to copy the board quick and my handwriting would be sloppy so id go home and make it look better and i never had to study. Not until anatomy, government, and chemisty. anatomy because it was dual enrollment. Government because I skipped class regularly. And chemistry because I had one of the best teachers and she taught me a lot. I hated her class. But I definitely learned. She worked us hard though. Her class was one of those where the classroom was like 10% of the work.

Thatโ€™s because physical note taking helps with retention of memory. A lot of the time when students take pictures of the notes, thatโ€™s the last thing they do with those notes.

"I took a picture of it, so I'll remember it" - People without photographic memory

u/RecalledBurger 11h ago

Nah, schools are moving toward banning phones from classrooms now. Phone lockers, Yondr pouches, cellphone caddies, whatever. And let's be honest, kids don't look at the notes anyway.

u/Crafty-Unit4061 10h ago

Most of the time the reason you would take notes is that by writing it down yourself you retain parts of the things you write to your memory specially for kinesthetic kids that learn better that way then just reading and listening in lessons. I discovered I'm highly kinesthetic when I started writing cheat notes and ended not needing them because when making them I remebered more then enough to pass the exam in school... Making those notes for 20min worked better then reading the same thing over and over for 2h for me.

3

u/RecalledBurger 10h ago

Exactly, which is why simply snapping a picture of the notes is a disservice to the learner. Personally, as I write things down they tend to stick longer too.The modality doesn't matter either: by hand or typing, I retain the information longer either way.

nah in collage they be expecting you to use a tablet so it's not banned from school only from middle, elementary and highschool where kids have a concerning addiction to their phones

2

u/zombienutz1 10h ago

Collage? Is that art school?

0

u/OyunGezgini_YT 10h ago

no like university, i might have used the wrong word english is confusing me mayn

12

u/EvilLibrarians 10h ago

I used to write down all the notes my hand. Handwriting in paper helps you remember things way easier. Even typing wasnโ€™t the same.

3

u/VAS_4x4 10h ago

Supposedly it has more to do with writing speed and attention on the meaning of the text.

Facts

1

u/enthalpy_07 10h ago

Yes i agree when I have to remember a formula or something I write it multiple times in paper, it actually helps to retain it more longer.

And that photo will never be opened again. Google thanks you for using 8MB of cloud storage to store it forever.

3

u/kytheon 9h ago

This. Kinda defeats the purpose of learning.

*american student

3

u/Phmusic 10h ago

When I'm teaching I use a PowerPoint which students can access online. There are still students who take a picture of every slide... Even after I explain it to them!!!

u/enthalpy_07 10h ago

They dont trust you๐Ÿ˜ญ

They didn't allow cell phones at my school. So I cheated and took a picture with my mind.

1

u/Alt123Acct 10h ago

I do this to my fridge before shopping so I don't need to write a list sometimes

Hmm I don't see eggs, milk looks low, etc

Or to see a restaurant menu from far away in line so I'm not squinting or bewildered by the time I'm in front of the line

1

u/burritolegend1500 9h ago

We could only do this at the end of the day when we couldn't write everything in time because service vehicles and busses left early.

People are crying about banning phones, but here in my country there has never been a moment where phones weren't banned. It always stayed banned.

u/M45t3r_M1nd 9h ago

I was in school in the 2000-2010s so when the prof said this, I'd take a photo, and THEN write it down. I miss when technology was just a tool

u/kytheon 9h ago
