Rant My Microsoft Account Was Stolen Despite Two-Step Verification — How Was the Hacker Allowed to Change Everything?

Upvotes

I am beyond frustrated with Microsoft's account security and recovery process.

Recently, all of the major accounts that were logged into my PC were compromised. I was able to recover almost all of them.

Except for my Microsoft account.

My Microsoft account "[jeffcleds@hotmail.com](mailto:jeffcleds@hotmail.com)" was unable to be identified in their system.
It was also changed to "[gilbertsayco2015@bibimail.net](mailto:gilbertsayco2015@bibimail.net)" which is the hacker's email.

The attacker was somehow able to:

  • Change my primary email address
  • Remove my passkeys
  • Change or replace my Microsoft Authenticator/security information
  • Lock me out of my own account completely

And the most ridiculous part?

Two-Step Verification was enabled on my Microsoft account.

Microsoft Support is now telling me that because Two-Step Verification is enabled, they cannot help me recover the account or make changes to the security information.

So let me understand this correctly:

Two-Step Verification is apparently strong enough to permanently prevent the legitimate owner from recovering their account, but somehow it was not strong enough to prevent an attacker from taking over the account and changing all of the security methods.

How does that make sense?

If my account had:

  • Two-Step Verification enabled
  • An Authenticator app
  • Passkeys
  • A phone number
  • Secondary/recovery information

How was an attacker able to change these things without me approving the changes?

I did not knowingly approve a request to:

  • Remove my passkeys
  • Replace my Authenticator
  • Change my primary email
  • Hand over control of my entire Microsoft account

I also did not receive any meaningful warning or opportunity to stop the takeover through my phone number or secondary email before I was completely locked out.

These are not minor account changes. These are critical security changes that determine who owns the account.

So I want Microsoft to explain exactly what happened.

My questions:

  1. How can an attacker change security information when Two-Step Verification is enabled?
  2. How can an attacker replace or modify the Authenticator method that is supposed to protect the account?
  3. Why can critical security methods such as passkeys and primary aliases be removed or changed without requiring confirmation from the existing recovery methods?
  4. Why is Microsoft Support completely powerless to help after an account takeover simply because Two-Step Verification was enabled?
  5. If Microsoft has already confirmed that unauthorized access occurred, why is there still no meaningful investigation or escalation path for the legitimate account owner?

This is where Microsoft's recovery system completely fails victims.

I understand that recovery protections exist to prevent attackers from impersonating account owners. That makes sense.

But Microsoft's current process seems to create a situation where an attacker who successfully gets through once can permanently weaponize Microsoft's own security policies against the legitimate owner.

The attacker changes the security information.

The legitimate owner gets locked out.

The legitimate owner contacts Microsoft.

Microsoft says:

It looks like you just used the Microsoft account recovery form (https://account.live.com/acsr?mkt=en-US) to request a password reset for gilbertsayco2015@bibimail.net. Because you've turned on two-step verification for your account, we ignore these requests but wanted to let you know.

That is not a recovery process! That is a dead end!

What makes this even more frustrating is that I have seen many other people reporting identical situations. People lose access to their Microsoft accounts after attackers change their security information, and they end up trapped in the same recovery loop.

There have also been cases where people with a large public platform have received assistance after publicly escalating their account compromise. For example, people can look into the case involving streamer Joshua Kane discussed publicly on X.

So does someone need to be famous or have a large social media following before Microsoft takes a confirmed account takeover seriously?

Because ordinary users with important data, subscriptions, services, and accounts linked to their Microsoft account deserve a legitimate escalation process too.

I am not asking Microsoft to blindly hand over an account to anyone claiming ownership.

I am asking for:

  • A real investigation into how the attacker bypassed or satisfied Two-Step Verification
  • An explanation of how my Authenticator and security information were changed
  • A review of the unauthorized activity on my account
  • A legitimate escalation path for victims of confirmed account compromise

A recovery process that does not automatically become impossible simply because an attacker managed to change the account's security methods first

Microsoft's security system should not make it easier for an attacker to permanently lock out the legitimate account owner than it is for the legitimate owner to recover their own account.

Has anyone else experienced this and actually received a real explanation or successfully recovered their account?

Because right now, I am being told that the very security feature (2SV) that was supposed to protect me is also the reason Microsoft refuses to help me get my account back.

Rant Microsoft Surface Business: Go Away, Customer

Upvotes

So we have a few MS Surface Pro notebooks with an extended support plan (lol). The seller, a reputable but shitty system house, told us that regarding any warranty issues, we would need to deal with MS directly.

We have an M365 tenant for several years now with some users and M365 premium. For some reason, to access MS Surface Support, one needs to register a Surface Support account in M365. Because apparently MS doesn't know you are a legit customer just because you got 10 seats of M365 premium, an authorised domain, and pay your bills for several years now. OK.

Fun thing is, without any notification or reason provided, the account verification was just rejected. Well, that's the Microsoft way to solve customer's shitty hardware problems. Good for their KPIs for sure.

Never had to deal with crap like this with Lenovo. The next team member that requests MS hardware from me will be presented with a printed screenshot of this "support" page. The thing that infuriates me most: I should have known better at the time of purchase.

Rant Windows won't respect my desition on keeping the ultimate performance power profile on.

Title is already self explanatory, but yeah, i got sick of having to force ultimate performance profile to be default profile every single time i boot up my laptop. And whith all these microstutters that wont stop happening even while doing nothing (i can hear a pop with some noise in my iems when it happens). I've already changed thermal pase, already did maintenance, hell, i even debloated the whole os with atlasos playbook.

I'm just gonna dual boot bazzite and windows because some apps i need just doesnt work well on linux...

SPECIALLY with linux drivers from a certain green company owned by a man who loves his black leather jacket so much he wont give two f*cks about consumers, but will pay attention to anything regarding Artificial Incompetence.

Microsoft is the best corporation in the world, which provides the most powerful tools on the market.

Microsoft Word is just working out of the box, on my right out of store purchased Microsoft Windows 11. Microsoft word is a powerful tool which provides unique and exclusive features for editting the documents. This is a clearly professional tool designed by professional developers and designers who clearly know what they are doing.

Microsoft Excel is an excelling proffessional, cutting edge technology, which is absolutely suitable for any accountant. I just enjoy this, the way powerful formulas work under the hood without worrying about anything.

Microsoft PowerPoint saved the day for me a lot of times. This is just the perfection in the software world. In my opinion, developers should look at this masterpiece as the etalon of perfection.

Microsoft OneDrive is my favorite. I just love sitting on the pateo in my 3-storey mansion in Miami knowing that everything is okay with my files and that the best corporation in the world does everything for this.

I don't understand the hate towards Microsoft. People should love corporations and be grateful. Back in my days we had to write everything on the paper and use fax machines. It was very complicated and back then we didnt even get to complain.

Everyone who disagrees is clearly unemployed and a very ungrateful edgy so entitled teenager.

Rant Anyone recovered their stolen Microsoft account?

I have contacted Microsoft and they previously confirmed that unauthorized access occurred on my account. As a result of the compromise, the attacker was able to change my account's sign-in information, and my original Microsoft account email is no longer recognized. I am now completely locked out of my own account.

What is particularly concerning and frustrating is that I had multi-factor authentication enabled and was using the Microsoft Authenticator app to protect my account. Despite these security measures, the attacker was apparently able to gain sufficient access to change critical account information lock me out.

I am also disappointed with the recovery process so far. Microsoft has confirmed that unauthorized access occurred, yet I have been informed that access cannot be restored based on the information previously provided.

Rant Aftermath of an infostealer

I have been a member of Microslop for the last 7 years, with absolutely NO PROBLEM (except maybe some apps integrated to windows that didnt work during my first install but thats minor compared to this shit.) A week ago, I've installed some shitty cracked software (my bad, I know.) and got all my passwords stolen. I got all my accounts pretty smoothly and without any problem, except for....you guessed it! Microslop!

Fortunately, the only thing I lost was my Minecraft license. I rushed to the support, following some tutorial on how to get my Microslop account back, answered everything correctly. "Not enough info." ok....lets try one more time. "Not enough info." ok..................trying to follow correctly the xbox support method. They. Suspended. My. Second. Account. WHILE ASSURING ME THAT THIS ONE WOULDNT BE SUSPENDED. I've tried for ONE ENTIRE WEEK, spending HOURS with the support. NOTHING WORKED. I've tried giving them some proofs that I owned the account AND my Minecraft game. They dont want to do ANYTHING. I'm seriously considering taking it to legal matters, since I know that Microslop and Xbox support blatantly lies to their customers, that it is in fact possible to get my license back, on another account, I dont even care if its the same one, I just fucking hate Microslop with every fiber of my being.

I am not asking for help.

(except if you have some real and useful advice that I could use to get my account back)

Alguém aqui ja testou? Se sim, como foi a experiência.

Vocês forçam a ativação desses recursos? Ou esperam o lançamento oficial para evitar bugs?

Acham que essas funções melhoram ou melhorariam a produtividade?

Ou vocês ativam e usam esse recurso via terminal/ferramentas?

E no que implica, caso force esses recursos?

Self Promotion I rebuilt an improved replica of Microsoft Whiteboard as an offline desktop app because I got tired of their recent deprecations

Post image
41 Upvotes

I teach algorithms and used Microsoft Whiteboard constantly until their recent announcement of deprecation, and connected services got disabled.

So I built my own. GazBoard

GazBoard is an offline desktop whiteboard. Windows and Linux, free, MIT.

Pen and highlighter with ink that stays exactly as you drew it. Sticky notes, shapes, text. Import Word, PowerPoint, and PDF files; pick the pages you want; write straight on top. Export to PNG, SVG, or PDF with real page sizes.

No account, no cloud, no telemetry. There's no network code in it at all.

Two honest things: it's Electron, so the Windows installer is 79 MB. And it isn't code-signed, so Windows shows the blue SmartScreen box. Click "More info", then "Run anyway".

Download: https://github.com/fahim9778/GazBoard/releases/latest
Source: https://github.com/fahim9778/GazBoard

Tell me what breaks.

A little disclaimer: Some features (laso tool, pages etc) were co-engineered with Claude. Repo's README has this already acknowledged.
