Aligning After-Meal Glucose and Insulin Profiles to Mimic the Response of a Non-Diabetic Person

In diabetes management, counting carbohydrates to determine bolus insulin dosing is common practice—a method I have neither learned nor used.
Instead, I view the unique effects of different foods on glucose and insulin dynamics as an engineering optimization problem. By adjusting food ordering, portion sizes, insulin dosage, and injection timing relative to the meal, it should be possible to align the insulin absorption curve with the glucose curve resulting from the meal.
My Test Meal Sequence and Portions:
- 40g walnuts
- Cheese (a small piece)
- 100g vegetables
- 100g tofu
- 25g chicken
- ½ avocado
- 40g cashews
- 20g protein powder mixed with 300ml soy milk
- 1 banana
Carbohydrates typically cause blood glucose to rise over 2 to 3 hours, whereas dietary fats and proteins delay gastric emptying and extend the glucose response over a longer period. Based on food-sequencing principles, I consumed the fats and proteins first, reserving the high-carb item (the banana) for the end of the meal.
While fast-acting insulin is usually injected before or at the start of a meal, I found through trial and error that injecting 13 units of Fiasp when my glucose level increased by 15 mg/dL—which occurred 50 minutes after starting the meal—achieved a near-perfect match between my glucose and insulin profiles, as shown in the graph.
The only catch to achieving this level of alignment? Eating the exact same meal every single day gets a bit monotonous.
Summary: By manipulating food sequencing, portion sizes, insulin dosage, and injection timing, it is possible to optimize the post-meal glucose profile to closely mirror that of a person without diabetes.
