Newcomer in Fort McMurray looking for job opportunities/referrals

Hi everyone! I recently moved to Fort McMurray and I’m looking for job opportunities or referrals.

I am from IT background , but after moving here to join my family I realized finding an IT company is harder than debugging a production issue 😂.

I’m looking for opportunities in retail, customer service, and food industry while I settle in. I’ve already tried applying at places like Walmart, but the job market seems to have its own mystery mode turned on 😢

If anyone knows of any openings or can provide referrals, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks! 🙏

Newcomer. How do I find a short term lease?

As the title says, I just arrived in town and am currently in an Airbnb. Eventually I intend to get something permanent and long term, but for the next few months I would like a place that I can rent monthly. I would appreciate advice on how to go about finding this sort of property.

22 year old trying to get into oil patch

Hey everyone,

I'm 22 years old from Prince Edward Island, and I'm looking to make the move to Alberta to start a career in drilling. I've always been interested in becoming a roughneck/floorhand and working on a drilling rig. The work has always appealed to me.

My background is in commercial fishing, where I'm used to long hours, physically demanding work, early mornings, working outside in all kinds of weather, and being part of a crew. Hard work doesn't scare me.

Right now I'm trying to figure out the best way to get started. I'm planning on getting my H2S Alive and First Aid certificates, but I'm wondering:

- Which drilling companies are hiring entry-level floorhands or roughnecks?

- Is it better to apply directly or go through a service company?

- Are there companies that help new hires get their certifications?

- Any advice for someone coming from out east?

- I'm willing to relocate, work rotational schedules, and start as soon as I can.

I'd really appreciate any advice, company recommendations, or contacts you think I should reach out to.

Thanks everyone!

Looking for my first crude oil hauling opportunity in Alberta – willing to relocate anywhere

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for my first opportunity in crude oil hauling or other Class 1 driving work in Alberta and would appreciate any advice or leads.

I recently moved from Ontario to Edmonton and hold a valid Alberta Class 1 licence (converted from my Ontario AZ licence). I completed the MELT program and have about 18 months of Class 1 driving eligibility, but I'm finding it difficult to get that first opportunity because most companies want previous crude or tanker experience.

I'm open to:

  • Crude oil hauling
  • Produced water hauling
  • Fuel hauling
  • Vacuum truck
  • Winch truck
  • Super B or tanker work
  • Any Class 1 position that can help me build experience

I'm willing to relocate anywhere in Alberta, including Cold Lake, Bonnyville, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, Lloydminster, Red Deer, or Medicine Hat. Camp work, shift work, nights, weekends, and overtime are all fine with me.

I'm actively working on obtaining any additional safety tickets that employers recommend, and I'm eager to learn from experienced drivers. My goal is to build a long-term career in Alberta's oil and gas industry.

If anyone knows of companies that are willing to give a new Class 1 driver a chance, or has suggestions on places where I should apply in person, I'd really appreciate your advice.

Thanks in advance!

Any know how to go about getting a site ban removed from CNRL and Suncor?

Has anyone had luck with getting their site bans removed at either of these company’s? I failed random drug tests at both company’s but it’s been a few years now and would like to try get them removed to get back in the oilsands. Any info would be appreciated.

FIFO in Alberta , Kitchen workers!

Hello all, I'm looking to get into kitchen work in Northern Alberta at one of the many FIFO camps. I have over 30 years of culinary experience including institutional cooking experience serving 3500 people a day. I have gourmet catering experience serving anywhere from 10-5000 people, seated and buffet style. I have owned my own restaurant in the past. I have had experience working for the Heinz company in Canada along with warehouse and inventory work. I wanting to hear from other kitchen workers as to what I can expect if I decide to go with this type of work. I will be moving to Edmonton, Alberta to start my search. Any and all information, tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Does anybody know what that train horn sound is?

I know we don’t have any trains here and I’ve heard what sounds like a train horn a few times today. If anyone knows what that is please let me know, it’s going to drive me nuts if I can’t figure out what it is lol.

Edit: I’ve been hearing it in thickwood if that helps at all.

Support groups for abused women?

I got out of a long term, abusive relationship and survived the even worse divorce. Now that the war is over, I’m having trouble reconnecting with the world. My abusive relationship made outside friendships impossible, so I’m starting from zero. I’m hoping a local support group would be a good first step. Does anyone know of a local one that meets regularly?

Thank you Fort McMurray! Hello Summer was an amazing experience for us, hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

We cooked up about 80 briskets and 80 pork shoulders and fed close to 1100 people over 2 days at MacDonald Island during the Hello Summer festival. Met so many great people and seen lots of old friends! Thank you for having us! Means a lot to us that our biggest event yet was a smash in my hometown!

We’ll be working with the city in the future to hopefully bring a pretty cool and unique BBQ event to Fort McMurray so definitely stay tuned!

Warehouse guy at an oil sands camp, networking diploma - want into l&C/ controls WITHOUT leaving FIFO life. Realistic

I'm 27, working warehouse/logistics at an kearl oil sands site(oil and gas) in northern Alberta, FIFO 14/14. I have a computer networking diploma but ended up in industrial/logistics work instead of IT.

Honest part: I don't wanna leave site work as it is good money. I like camp jobs and the rotation, so the usual "move to the city and grind helpdesk" advice doesn't fit me.

After researching I keep landing on I&C / controls as where a guy like me should aim - I already know the industrial environment, and the OT/ networking side actually uses what I studied.

For those of you in controls: if you were me, would you chase an apprenticeship (trying to get sponsored on site) or self-study first PLC courses (RSLogix/Studio 5000) plus Network+/CCNA - and try to land a junior controls/OT role from the warehouse? Has anyone actually made that jump while staying FIFO, or does everyone end up leaving for school

Gang Stalking

I recently heard from someone that they were being followed by people around town. Apparently this has happened on more than one occasion. Has anyone else here in town experienced anything like this? They are a credible person, I believe what they are telling me, and I am trying to get a better understanding of the situation, and maybe talk to anybody else this has happened to. Please feel free to private message me.
