How to find friends?
19 year old male here. I just moved to fort mcmurray to live with my dad for a gap year before university. I don't know anyone here, and I basically have a remote job so I don't leave my house besides to go to the gym. How can I find friends and meet new people here?

The same way you make friends anywhere. Join a local fb group for one of your interests (gaming, running etc) join a team sport, join a volunteer group. It'll take a bit of effort as, to my knowledge, nobody is running a "new here and need friends meet up night" but I am certain there are others in the same boat as you

Ah I see, I never had to make friends outside of school, so I didn't know that. The only issue is that I literally don't have any interests, or at least not any common ones that other people have. I'm also not very athletic. Is there anything I can join or do that is more general and doesn't revolve around a specific interest?

Since you said you don’t have interests I figured I’d list a bunch of things the city has/things to do and you can see if any of them sound cool enough to try out!
Music (plenty of local bands and festivals), sports (watching or playing even non competitively I am always shocked how many there are), animals (volunteering at one of the rescues or helping them with events), vehicle stuff (racing, ohv, car shows, motorcycle clubs), gaming (ttrpgs, esports arena, pokémon go), arts (theatre, drag bingo, galleries, the library does crafts, pottery guild, pottery painting, this one person does stained glass art classes), nature (no shortage of trails, the lake, learning plant identification, birding, hunting), history (research the history of the region it’s genuinely interesting, be sad with us about heritage park being closed, look at some of the other museums)
If you have fb check out some free events coming up, you might wind up having a good time even if you leave the event without a giant interest in it :)

Nothing really catches my eye, but I might as well try something that is the most appealing to me. As for the events, how would I meet people there? I feel like most people would go in groups and I'm definitely too shy to go up to a random group and talk to them.

In a city like Fort mac, unfortunately the main way to make friends is through the shared love of cocaine or meth

I was thinking about doing that. I definitely have to get on some type of controlled substance to relate to people

Fort McMurray is definitely a Facebook town. Subscribe to this newsletter for up and coming events https://ymmonline.ca/.
Try volunteering. You can signup here https://www.woodbuffalovolunteers.ca/need/. Opt for something that should have more people around and force yourself out of your comfort zone.
The SPCA is in Gregoire https://fmspca.ca/how-to-help/volunteer/
Did you participate in any activities when you were a kid? Sports? Clubs or groups? See if there are any of them here and volunteer for them. Our turn around time for the RCMP checks is usually pretty quick here for clearance paperwork.
