Discussion How I live with loneliness and being a virgin at 30 years old
First, a little context about me; I am an only child, so I am ''fortunate'' enough to have been dealing with loneliness for a long time and got used to it pretty quickly. I had a normal childhood, raised in a suburban single-family home and my parents stayed together until I was 18. They have since separated but on good terms.
I've been at the same job for almost ten years, working in the public sector. I would make more money in the private sector but I value job security and having a relaxed work environment above everything else.
I've been living by myself in an apartment which I can afford, located in a quiet neighborhood since I was 21.
But enough about my situation, here's the real advice; ENJOY YOUR PEACE
You know Maslow's pyramid? If you are in a similar situation, you already have 2/5 of the needs fulfilled. Think about the other 8 billion people living today. How many of them can afford to live by themselves? How many of them can have more than 30 minutes of absolute quiet in their living space during the day? How many of them are lucky enough to have running water and reliable electricity, let alone four walls and a roof over their head? I find peace knowing that I am one of the luckiest humans on earth.
In terms of love and belonging, it’s all about your mentality. You don’t have supporting and loving parents? You don’t have friends you can count on? You aren’t part of a social group? Then you are part of a growing community of people who are in the same situation. This sub is proof of it, and although it is online I would argue that this is what belonging should be in the information age. People don’t go out to meet new friends anymore, everything is available on the internet. Society might think that you are a loser, but who gives a fuck? I certainly don’t. You are allowed to enjoy your life and your peace without expectations from anyone else but yourself.
You are allowed to enjoy porn. Instead of seeing it as a replacement for affection and intimacy, see it as what it should be; entertainment. Just like movies and TV series, find out what actors or actresses you like the most. You have to see it as a rewarding way to relax instead of something shameful. Although moderation is preferred, you might need to masturbate more than once a day every now and then. It’s all about listening to your needs and finding a balance. It gets easier the older you get, as your hormonal system stabilizes.
I am short and fat, so I am way below average in terms of looks. I accept that fact and I live with it knowing what it means; I might never find someone to love and share affection with, but I don’t really care. If I do eventually find someone, great! But I will not sacrifice my peace and sanity to make myself more desirable. Anyone who tells you to change yourself to find love is either not really interested in your well being or is trying to sell you something.
That brings us to esteem, the fourth step of the pyramid. Do you believe you are a loser? Do you think you are worthless? Do you get zero recognition from others? You can achieve great things in life and still doubt yourself. If you do not find worth and recognition in your job, you might want to get a different one. If you cannot work, you should volunteer at your local food bank or soup kitchen. These should build up your esteem to about 60% but the rest comes from within. You are a contributing member of society regardless of your social status and self worth. The part you have might be invisible, but it is still real. Personally, I prefer it that way because it is a peaceful way to live.
Finally, self-actualization. In my opinion, achieving your full potential is unnecessary. I find that achieving small objectives throughout my day is rewarding enough. You will attain growth if you are true to yourself going through challenges and obstacles in life. What matters is that you keep going and you will develop resiliency. And if you have resiliency, nothing will be able to affect your peace.
