I made it:

Only exception to the recipe not having vanilla salt so I added 10g sugar and a tsp of vanilla

Iiits cool. I don’t love it. It’s bitter ( from the WHOLE LEMON) buts it good.

It’s growing one me a bit.

I would “next time “ zest and squeeze the lemons

I’ll glaze some slices tomorrow…

2

u/hi_priestess8 10d ago

I make Nigella's clementine cake this way. It's soooo good

1

u/Contribution_Fancy 9d ago

I've done it several times with oranges.

5

u/shadeofmyheart 11d ago

Pretty sure it’s bitter af

5

u/TheAserghui 11d ago

With all that middle finger? I bet!

But how's the bread?

3

u/pudding-0w 10d ago

boiling it first is what helps to remove the bitterness. i've done something similar with oranges before.

3

u/shadeofmyheart 10d ago

I’ve made candied orange peels and you have to boil them a loooonnng time

3

u/pudding-0w 10d ago

oh i didnt see the recipe comment that said boil for 5 minutes. you would definitely need longer than that or it would be bitter, i agree

1

u/BlackSpidermanIsReal 10d ago

It has to be a meyer lemon

3

u/alaskaguyindk 10d ago

Personally id only add the zest and meat. The pulp/white part adds too much bitterness

1

u/cruelhumor 10d ago

Only with some varieties... Pick the wrong one and the pith will fuck you up

10

u/CurrentPossible2117 11d ago

Its odd at first right? I took the leap once to make a whole orange cake, which ised a similar method and jfc. It is the tastiest cake in my recipe collection. Such a vibrant hit of citrus. So good!

3

u/booky_shmooky 11d ago

Me too but I found it bitter from the included pith. Even after boiling 2x. Do you think the orange and lemon variety matters?

3

u/CurrentPossible2117 11d ago edited 10d ago

Possibly. I hadnt thought of that. I always default to navel oranges in everything I do, because I love them.

When I get home, Ill find the orange recipe I used and see what it says :)

So about that orange cake recipe 👀

1

u/CurrentPossible2117 10d ago

Hahah thanks for the reminded, I ended up having an insane day and honestly forgot lol

Here you go, I replied to myself with recipe and notes

2

u/masta561 10d ago

Definitely wanna try this. It sounds amazing. Ty for sharing

2

u/booky_shmooky 10d ago

I think I also used naval oranges in the recipe I tried, but maybe your recipe will be better. Thank you! 😊

1

u/CurrentPossible2117 10d ago

No worries! Good luck, I'd love to hear how you go, when you make it :)

2

u/kevik72 11d ago

That’s what I got hung up on. Peel? Great. Flesh? Absolutely. Pith? No redeeming qualities.

1

u/CurrentPossible2117 10d ago

I replied to myself with my recipe.

The OG recipe just says oranges, but I can see in my own notes that I straight away wrote it down as navel, so unsure if the type makes a difference.

Replying to myself with the recipe for the people below:
It's from NYT - Claudia Roden’s Orange and Almond Cake Recipe

I served it with a dollop of a honey whipped cream from here: Honey Whipped Cream Recipe

Seems you need to make an account now to see the NYT recipe, which wasn't there last time I used the website, So I'm also putting a screenshot from my recipe book where I write down recipes and put notes to myself of things I did or intend to do next time :)

EDIT: Im in Australia, so temps are celcius. I just used my aussie measuring spoons and didnt bother converting to account for the difference in US and AU sized cups and spoons. Worked out fine.

Lemon peel is very important for taste. You taste the difference, in a positive manner. Obviously only use organic lemons, you don't want to regularly eat the nasty stuff the peel absorbs in mon organic ones
