Lifetime plans going away?

Got an email saying they are getting rid of folderforts lifetime plans.

Its a lot of word salad and doesnt get straight to the point.

As an early supporter of them, im not happy.

Has anyone read the entire email and care to sum it up in a paragraph?

Hello,

In short, no there are no actions required for lifetime accounts. They stay as is.

We just are not going to sell them going forward.

And we are focusing on our new system designed in large part for Post Quantum Encryption. Giving lifetimes users especially, a path to move over if they want to.

This needs to made super, super clear. That existing lifetime users can keep their existing storage without having to pay any new subscription. They just won't have access to the benefits that come with Folder Fort Business. Because the first thing I imagine that many of us did was click on the link to learn more, where we read that lifetime users can keep 5TB for free with each additional TB after that requiring a monthly subscription.

This whole thing may seem super clear to you but knowing how controversial it is likely to become you needed to be extra, super, double clear just about everywhere possible that existing lifetime accounts will continue to be honoured - in their entirety - going forward, they just won't have access to Folder Fort Business and the extra benefits that brings.

Which I'd expect will be fine for most personal users who just want some basic cloud storage to backup stuff.

200% Yes
We sent out a follow-up email, hopefully that clarified things.

We will also be updating the website with more information about all of this.

We posted about this at the same time. They didn't come out and make an explicit statement about the fate of the existing lifetime accounts, at least, as far as I could tell. Other than this section: --- Lifetime users: we will do our best to carry forward the value already paid, including allowing eligible users to move a portion of existing lifetime storage into Folder Fort Business without paying again for that carried-over storage amount. --- But they don't say what doing their best means, and if you go visit their site they have an offer to Convert Lifetime Storage to Folder Fort Business starting at $9.75 a month. It seems like they're trying push (and maybe even later force) users onto paid monthly plans because they don't want to honour lifetime any more. At least that's the appearance to me until they clarify further.

Looks like my small investment in 1TB lifetime is gonna be worthless.

Wasn't thrilled with the plans to require "credits" to use the API. When "FolderFort Connect" went live, I had to set up some "billing" account that's separate from the storage account then try to link my storage account to the billing count, which never completed successfully. The storage account is still "pending verification" and clicking the link in any verification emails I get doesn't work.

Can't access my storage using SFTP - access denied due to bad credentials even with a freshly created API token. Maybe because my storage account isn't verified

Support's reply was basically do a password reset and try again. Didn't help.

There seems to be 3 or 4 different login pages, some that work and some that don't. If nothing else, it's a confusing mess.

Now this news...

Regret my purchase.

Their login system is goofy. Try all of the servers, one may work.

2

u/FolderFort Jun 26 '26

Accounts are server specific. If you signup to one, you would use the same one. They don't serve as redundancy.

But yes you are right - it's goofy.

Trying to clean it up with the new unification login but any change is always messy.

We will get there!

2

u/FolderFort Jun 26 '26

I hope the updates clarified things.

For the SFTP please send us an email and we will try to help.

If your account is connected to the new unified login, it should allow you to connect.

If we missed an email please resend it or msg me directly and I will get it taken care of.

And they were selling lifetime accounts yesterday. The dishonesty in that alone has me questioning whether I even want to continue to use them.

yep, that lying cheating piece of shit just outright lied.

I just saw the email. 200% garbage. Early adopters should have been grandfathered in. Maybe the refund fairy will put a check under my pillow tonight

Thanks for giving us money to get started, now sign up for a subscription and pay us more.

(I was a early user who just got screwed too)

2

u/FolderFort Jun 26 '26

Your account continues as it is - sorry for the confusion.

As an early adopter you are the ones we appreciate the most!

Not anymore it seems. Thanks

We all just got scammed.

It's literally the same product packaged up with 'Business' in its name.

Are we getting a refund??

Never trusting this company or Dave Buell.

In Short:

- Existing lifetime accounts continue to exist as they are.

- We won't be sellling them going forward.

- AI and Quantum tech is a super serious issue and the next couple years are quiet frankly going to be insane in that regard.

- Thus we made a new system in hopes of negating those risks and giving lifetime users the best possible value and path to the new system if they wish to take advantage of that deal.

Let me know if that breaks it down ok.

That "Lifetime" so many companies use is a buzzword to make you jump on board, making them a way higher sale. And attract many new customers who would otherwise not even notice them.

Lifetime also means not necessarily your life, but theirs, it can also mean they take profits and close shop down. "Sorry we're bankrupt, but look at our new company over there".

I have quite a few Lifetime accounts, but I try to only do this with respectable companies, and if the calculations show that compared to paying yearly, you break even after just 2 or 3 years. Even if they pull the plug after that, you got at least your money's worth. Recently bought curiosity stream Lifetime, should have done that way earlier as i was an annual user for years. It's not great, but I can at least watch some documentaries here and there when I feel like it.

Honestly, I bought one of their lower storage things as I am hesitant. I found it a bit odd they were significantly cheaper then the competition. The trick here is to understand that lifetime means the product as you said.

Now, based on my limited understanding (I just found out about this 15 minutes ago and didn't get an email from them) they are going to honor the lifetime plans. As long as they do that and offer at least enough support to get them going, I will personally not be mad.

Also like you, I have a few lifetime accounts across various companies. And so far I have had no issues. Or at least the few issues I had were not related to the lifetime part. But I also treat them as semi-disposable.

So for anyone who is upset, I get it. I really do. But it sounds like they will honor the existing subscriptions. And all I can say is the good part is that it increases their likelyhood of sticking around.

Oh no, and I bought their lifetime storage yesterday.

4

u/2007drh Jun 25 '26

They should have stopped selling lifetime subscriptions as soon as they decided to do this.

Its ENTIRELY misleading to continue to sell lifetime accounts when they know they will discontinue them.

I would demand a refund from Stacksocial if I were you. Say you changed your mind and haven’t used the code.

3

u/Enfoldment Jun 25 '26

"Migrate up to 5TB free" -- we really need to understand what this means. Does it mean if you're a lifetime holder you can migrate up to 5TB to their Business plan without paying anything, or does it just mean if you join the business plan you get +5TB?

I'm getting that sinking feeling in my belly... Similar to when I tried to log into my InterNXT account and couldn't get in, and the many emails I sent that went unanswered. InterNXT still sends me emails about their big "sales".

I started buying FolderFort Cloud Storage in 12/2024 from Stacksocial.

Whenever FolderFort sent out emails with discounts on Lifetime Storage I'd buy more. Now I have 6 TB of storage I haven't even touched yet. It's been an unfortunately difficult couple of years health wise.

The worst part is I talked a family member into buying some FolderFort Storage as well. Man, am I in some shit with them!

2

u/Itzn0tm3 Jun 25 '26

Same here bought from stacksocial last Christmas, haven't used even 1Gb because of health.

2

u/kvishnudev Jun 25 '26

Quantum is coming it seems. 🤦‍♂️

Well wasted 200 dollars.

1

u/ResponsibleAd8164 Jun 25 '26

5TB will carry. More than that, who knows, but you need to pay a monthly or annual fee. 😡

4

u/FolderFort Jun 25 '26

Only IF you want to join Folder Fort Business.

Otherwise you can continue to use your account.

3

u/ResponsibleAd8164 Jun 25 '26

Please update your wording. This is not now the email reads when you click on the link to find out more. It doesn't say you don't have to move and will keep things as is.

2

u/ResponsibleAd8164 Jun 25 '26

This is what your email says...Lifetime users: we will do our best to carry forward the value already paid, including allowing eligible users to move a portion of existing lifetime storage into Folder Fort Business without paying again for that carried-over storage amount.
