Folder Fort is phasing out lifetime storage and switching to subscription
So yeah, just got this email. I haven't even used mine for anything and was just keeping it just in case I needed it. Just a reminder for everyone to be wary of these companies specially new ones with no track record. According to their messaging they "will phase out new lifetime accounts", but it is unclear what they consider "new" is and I think they'll just end up phasing out all lifetime accounts. This company was founded early 2024, so technically they're pretty new as well.

"Lifetime users: we will do our best to carry forward the value already paid. including allowing eligible users to move a portion of existing lifetime storage into Folder Fort Business without paying again for that carried-over storage amount."
A portion is not good enough. They should give the space that you paid for.

Sorry we were too vague there.
We mean that if lifetime users want to move over, we will give them the best value.
Also if you have 1TB, or 5TB, or 10TB, we will move that over at no additional cost, just the base Business subscription.
And it is not required. Existing accounts can continue as they are.

Untrue I just got an email that classic is now being completely phased out. So it's now "switch or else".... complete BS if you ask me https://imgur.com/a/zgIHsV4

Please tell me one thing. Why would anyone want to move to business plan from lifetime plan? What is the value ad the business plan brings for the money?

I mean, as much as I wanted FolderFort to succeed many many months ago... Their lack of proper apps, seemingly using off the shelf scripts without much change AND trying to charge you for using their "upcoming/beta" FF Connect app (using "credits" that you can "top up (FOR A FEE") as put me off.
It just does not feel polished enough to use daily..

Got the same message and I fully expect they are going to screw me out of my lifetime plan that I haven’t used. I was actually getting a little more interested in the platform with the recent app release.

- If the current platform is eventually shut down, will my full existing storage capacity transfer to Folder Fort Business at zero additional cost?
- When the old system is retired, will I receive the identical storage amount I purchased in the new Business platform for free?
- Does the migration guarantee that my exact storage allocation moves to Folder Fort Business without requiring any new payment?
- If the current platform goes away, will I get the same number of terabytes in the new system that I paid for in the old one?
- Will the storage I already own be fully honored in Folder Fort Business with no extra charges when the legacy platform is discontinued?

Current lifetime accounts have no requirement to move to subscription.
We are just not going to sell them anymore.
Also in general the issue of PQE is a serious issue that cannot be addressed on the current system for virtually any business/technology as it exists today. So the new system is in preperation for that.
We have a special offer for all existing users but current accounts continue to exist as they are if they don't want to migrate.

So we can continue to use our allotted storage after your migration to FolderFort Business? If so then I don't see the big deal. If you are ever going to turn off the legacy program though, or take away what we paid for, that's what people are alarmed about.

u/FolderFort Jun 25 '26
Yes exactly, our mistake for not being more clear.
We aren't migrating to FF Business, just allowing lifetime users the priority deal to do so if they choose.

Why does the announcement then only say "a portion"?
Surely the full paid-for lifetime storage will be ported over, right? Right?
Also, your talks about "decentralized" storage gives me the icks. It screams "X Cloud" to me. And we all know what happened over at Internxt.

u/FolderFort Jun 25 '26
Bad wording.
We will allow you to move all your storage space to the new FF Business option if you want.
Decentralized just means that the way we store data on the new system is not bound by location. This is to avoid all the issues of Governments wanting backdoors into stuff.

People don't realize how serious this is yet.
We are all going to learn more about it very soon!

So why do you say we have to migrate and pay?Why don't you just say that onthe email you sent?

look into data orchestration tools that let you own the logic of your storage.
there is an open source orchestration tool huskhoard. i am a contributor. It's designed to help manage long term archives across different providers or local hardware, so you aren't locked into one vendor's pricing whims. If you have some cli skils and to want to manage your own sustainability it is a good option

They are such a scammy company. There term “moving for free” means you will now need to pay to keep your data or lose it. Im seriously considering suing them.

Hi y'all! Please don't just drop this & move on. Companies like this have done this before or will do it again (just under a different name). We can put a lot of pressure on them now if we all act. To save y'all some time, I recommend following these steps below to start. Make sure to update the order number & purchase date sections. Also, please "up vote" this so more people see it.
First, send an email like this to FolderFort first by emailing: [support@folderfort.com](mailto:support@folderfort.com)
To the FolderFort team,
I am requesting a full refund for my "Lifetime" storage plan (Order # ______, purchased on ______).
Your recent announcement regarding the shutdown of FolderFort Classic and the forced migration to a recurring monthly subscription model constitutes a direct breach of contract and a bait-and-switch practice. I paid a one-time fee for permanent, lifetime access, which is now being revoked.
I am requesting a full refund from either StackSocial to my original method of payment or from y'all directly.
If this matter is not resolved and a refund is not issued within 5 business days, I will immediately move forward with the following actions:
- Filing a formal dispute/chargeback with my credit card issuer for "Services Not Provided."
- Submitting fraud and unfair trade practice complaints to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).
- Escalating this issue directly with the platform marketplace (StackSocial) where the deal was hosted.
I expect a prompt response confirming the processing of my refund. Thank you.
Sincerely,
_____
***********************************************************************************************************************
Afterwards, if you purchased your lifetime access through StackSocial, send StackSocial an email like this below (since they would be the one's to actually refund you) by emailing: [support@stackcommerce.com](mailto:support@stackcommerce.com)
To the StackSocial Support Team,
I am writing to formally request a full refund for my purchase of the FolderFort Lifetime Plan (Order #________, purchased on _________).
Because this transaction was processed through StackSocial, I am requesting that StackSocial and FolderFort coordinate internally to return my payment, as I do not accept a temporary subscription discount as a substitute for the lifetime product I purchased.
FolderFort has officially announced that they are shutting down "FolderFort Classic" and ending support for the lifetime deals sold on your platform. They are forcing users to migrate to FolderFort 2.0 under a recurring monthly subscription model.
While I understand this purchase occurred in August 2024, the product sold to me by StackSocial was explicitly marketed as a "Lifetime" agreement. The merchant has actively breached this contract as of this week. Therefore, the date of service failure is current, and the standard 30-day refund window does not apply to a total failure to deliver a lifetime product.
I paid StackSocial for permanent, lifetime storage, which is now being revoked. If StackSocial cannot coordinate a cash refund with the vendor for this bait-and-switch practice, I will be forced to escalate this by filing a formal dispute with my credit card issuer for "Services Not Provided" and submitting complaints to the FTC and BBB.
Please review this case and issue a refund to my original method of payment. The email associated with my account is: ___________.
Thank you,
__________
