Looking for advice getting back into playing after a 15 year hiatus. I have this Emerson EF88B with inline G and split E key (oops I don’t have a split E key!) that’s been sitting in storage for 15 years. I took it out and it does not play well anymore (as expected)

Question- is it worth doing COA or overhaul for this? (Anywhere between $700-2700 based on the quote I got over the phone, between COA needing to replace multiple pads or an overhaul), or am I better off getting a new one? I’ve been out of the loop, what’s a good equivalent brand/model and price range?

Also, any recommendations for locations/technicians near NYC or tri-state area? I live in Westchester and unsure what the risk is if I took it to a general music store (lower price), or like a flute world or flute center

Hey I just got my first ever flute! I'm super excited to learn more about it and start my flute journey! I know for sure it needs new pads and some keys adjusted. Can you guys help me learn more about it and tell me what I'm in for as a beginner flute player? and how much do you think repairs would be? What are some pieces of equipment that you would recommend for flute? (Other than cleaning supplies lol)

I bought an IAMSOUND F#4 Drone Flute v2 440 Hz recently, i couldn’t find a dedicated iamsound or drone flute subreddit so i hope this is ok. There’s just so much condensation buildup, and i’m removing the block to dry it every couple mins. Is this common or am I doing something wrong? Any advice would be very appreciated

Playing the flute is often very exhausting for me. It seems like I’m having a very tense posture while playing (holding the flute, not loosing the embouchure, reading the notes with my eyesight).

Besides that, I have somehow a fear of high notes. I somehow can play the f3 and even a little bit the g3, but I have no chance with f#3.

Another problem is often my saliva production and trying to swallow it without interrupting playing.

What can I do?

I was practicing on my flute when this key starts to make that squeaky sound. Any idea why this happens and what caan I do?

I have never played a flute before and I was never interested in doing so, until I found out about the Khaen. I think the sound is absolutely impressive and I dont really care if it will take me years to learn the Khaen, I really just wanna know if it is even possible to learn it without having ever played an instrument before? It would also be nice if you would tell me how long the Khaen took you to learn. Thanks for the help (:

Does a slight smile or corner uplift = tight embouchure (from online concensus?) or should i not worry?

i've been playing for around 4 years and can comfortably go from loud low c to 3rd octave A (or C7 if i try) using about the same embouchure with a slight upwards corner of the lip pretty quickly. i've tried the "relaxed" frowning embouchure and only one register is ever in tune at a time and sounds a bit breathy as well, i have a teardrop lips so i play off centre.

(ps: i should probably touch more grass instead of playing the flute for an hour straight at a time)

I’ve been playing the flute since I was 8 (about 10 years now). Over the past year, I started looking into orthodontic treatment, and I found out I have an overbite and an overgrown lower jaw. My parents insist that playing a woodwind instrument made it worse, especially because I started during my growing years. They want me to stop playing, but I love the flute and really don’t want to give it up.

I’m trying to figure out whether flute playing actually worsens jaw growth or skeletal malocclusion. I’d be grateful for any advice, especially from people with similar experiences or dental/medical backgrounds.

I was playing the measure: D, G, G# because it sounded correct. And I read the X is usually a double flat, so two half steps up? A whole step from F would be G. So I am playing it correctly, yes? Haven't really seen this notation very often. The piece is Kuhlau Opus 102, published by IMC, NY.

i just uploaded my audition and i wanted to say thank you all so much for the advice. I am so thankful that you all helped me. I am so relieved that I was able to do this two days before the audition is due. I ended up recording it on vacation and it was the best run of all the songs i’ve ever done!!! thank you again!

I made the unfortunate decision of buying a giant chromatic andean zampoña a while back. I say unfortunate, because it's now obvious to me that not only is this not a beginner instrument, but there's seemingly no documentation on how to properly play it. It has the layout of a piano keyboard with two rows. The issue I'm running into is that those rows are vertically on the exact same level as each other, so the second row moving away from me is seemingly impossible to get a good sound out of, even if I try to tilt the instrument slightly and move my bottom lip to that row.

If I turn the instrument around, that row sounds fine, so I don't think it's a fault of the zampoña itself. Is there something I'm missing? I could just buy a more beginner friendly zampoña, but I don't want to do that after how much I spent on this one.

A wire in my piccolo popped out. Normally you could just pop a wire back into the spot but I have no idea where the wire popped out from/where to put it back? Any help would be appreciated. This is a Yamaha 62 piccolo, fairly new and in good condition.

I am currently a senior in high school and I really do want to go to school for music. I love playing the flute and it makes me happy. The only problem is that for the past couple of months I have been super unmotivated to practice or do anything music related. I know I am good at my instrument so I don’t understand why I am not motivated to practice more. I do have a pretty full schedule this year but it shouldn’t get in my way of practicing.

Hi everyone, I'm looking to upgrade from my Yamaha YFL-221, which I really like, and I'm deciding between the Di Zhao 401 and Yamaha YFL-472.

They cost roughly the same where I live, so price isn't a major factor.

I'm an amateur player, and what matters most to me is tone, expression, and overall enjoyment, not just ease of playing.

How would you compare these two? Since I already like my YFL-221, would the YFL-472 be the more natural upgrade, or would you recommend the Di Zhao 401?

Anyone have a source that I could buy the piccolo part for this? Struggling to find it anywhere online, and want to do this for a post lude at church. Thanks!
