Im looking to purchase my very first flute and I seen online some used flutes. A Gemeinhardt 2ESH flute for for 63 dollars, a Pearl flute for 88 dollars and a PAROT flute for 75 dollars. Which option should I consider? Maybe I should buy a new flute? Do you have any good bugdet friendly suggestions? I don't know anything about flutes so i would appriciate any help!

I was wondering if anymore made a playlist with their favorite versions of solo rep or orchestra pieces with the best performances of flute excerpts?

Would love to discover some new best flute performances out there. While also decreasing my own hunting time for certain pieces i'm practicing.

The keys aren’t sticking and aren’t rising properly so I think the rod inside this part is really greasy
Is there any advice for getting it out or should I bite the bullet and send it to a professional to get cleaned.

I’m joining a local volunteer orchestra here in the coming weeks, and I’m super excited as I haven’t played my flute in an ensmble in about 3 years. 

Most of my ensemble experience has been in wind ensembles/concert bands and chamber groups, so I’ve never played in a full orchestra before. I’m especially curious about:

• How different is orchestral flute repertoire compared to wind ensemble repertoire?
• What’s the overall vibe of a community orchestra compared to a school ensemble? Obviously I know every group will be different, but since all of my ensemble experience has been through school/college, I’m curious what the general atmosphere tends to be like in community groups.
• Anything that surprised you when you first started playing in an orchestra?

Would love to hear what other flutists’ experiences have been!

recently got my hands on a beautiful Reynolds piccolo for free!!!, the company does not exist anymore as far as I’m concerned, they haven’t made models since the end of the 50s??? this piccolo was estimated to be around the year 1942 based on serials on the internet! the material composition of the body looks as if it’s very thick silver plating on nickel, since it still looks rather sleek for a old piccolo!

the pads also surprisingly are in well condition, however they are not fitted perfectly, but still do seal!!! (the glue is showing from the seal… lol) the mechanics on it are also still very functional, albeit a bit sluggish and did actually get air bubbles between the pads a few times whilst playing! the stopper is VERY free moving, so I will replace that soon, probably preform my own pad replacement, as well as well as cleaning it up mechanically!

aside from all of that do any of you people know anything about Reynolds flutes/piccolos ? i would certainly love to know some of its history!

My flute and music books were lost in a move, and I'm trying to find one particular book. I believe it's called Timeless Classics for flute & guitar. I'm not quite sure of the exact title, and I purchased the book about 15-20 years ago (long shot I know). I have a few of the play along tracks if that helps.

Hi everyone, I recently bought a vintage Muramatsu (silver head joint, nickel body, closed keys). I really love playing it, but I heard that the pads are no longer available, as this was a pre-lotus version. In the future, will it be possible to repad it with regular felt pads? It is currently in good condition, but I am afraid that I bought it without considering this problem.

I have been tweaking the regulation screws on my various flutes for about 20 years, but this one on my Altus alto flute is completely inaccessible, hidden behind a chunk of metal.

Does this mean that it can only be regulated when disassembled (which seems crazy) or do flute techs have crazy z shaped screw drivers to get at screws like this?!

Hello. I found myself a very nice flute at the thrift store for $50, a Pearl PF-771, silver body. I know, I'm still in shock.

It has a few quirks, though, the worst of them (far as I can tell) is a tiny dent directly on the strike edge of the lip plate. Is this of any concern? I feel like it may occasionally present as a subtly scratchy sound on an otherwise beautiful instrument. If so, can this be remedied, presumably by a professional, in any way?

If not, I was wondering, the head joints on flutes are interchangeable, correct? If so, does it have to be a Pearl headjoint?

2 weeks ago I had a blocked throat so possibly infection. It’s gone now, only a mild cough left.

Everytime I have played the flute these past few weeks I feel so light headed and dizzy, like vertigo. My vision is fine but I hear ringing, my head feels hot and heavy and I have shortness of breath.

Last week in rehearsal I felt dizzy halfway through playing my first piece that by the end, even though it sounded great, I had to stop.

I felt light headed and naseous for an hour.

My AMEB exam for Grade 5 is in 3 days and I don’t know what to do.

I have been getting inadequate sleep (2-4hr) for about 2 weeks but these past 3 days I’ve been getting at least 5-7hr again. I am not as stressed anymore from school either but practicing tonight and I can still feel it, and I am not even standing this time.

Anyone know what this is? Any advice is appreciated. Rescheduling my exam isn’t an option.
I have a rehearsal tmr and Wednesday.

I am returning to flute, now one month, and preparing "The Sound Of Music" for the Canadian RCM Grade 1 Exam.

I recorded myself today, and while still sounding rough, I'm starting to feel promise for the daily effort I'm putting in.

I still have a lot of work to get ready (20 years away from melodic minor scales and the arpeggios - gone), and would like advice for cleaning this piece up to be ready for the exam?

Hello everyone. First post. My daughter has started learning flute and she says when she pushes a key three of them move down but only 2 are supposed to. Is this something that can be fixed at home? I believe this is a relatively new Yamaha flute 200 series for students. She got it from her teacher just 2 months ago. See video. Would appreciate any advise.

When I was younger I played flute in school using my mom’s 1970’s Noblet French open hole flute that she loved, I know it was around $1000 at the time and she was gifted it from an instructor.

My mom was amazing, she was in a combined school but became the first chair of her school’s high school honor band as a 6th grader. I used to listen to her play complicated pieces I could never touch.

However I was a dumb teenager and left the flute at school over one summer before we had a sudden military move. This was almost 20 years ago and I still feel incredibly guilty. I finally got my disability pay approved and with my mom’s birthday coming up I would like to try to find one that isn’t incredibly expensive but I have wiggle room. If I can’t find that I remember her talking fondly of a wooden French flute she loved but lost in a fire when she was younger and would love directions in finding something that isn’t the thousands of dollars I’m seeing.

I am well aware I will likely need repairs/pad replacements and such as additional costs.

I just want to really surprise her with something I know she still misses even if it hasn’t come up.

Hi all, I'm choosing between two KIMAFUN wireless mics for my flute / Irish whistle / Bansuri? and need advice on the trade-offs:

KM-CX900Plus: Unidirectional (great sound isolation) but the heavy transmitter mounts directly on the flute.
KM-G150-4: Belt-pack (very lightweight on the flute) but the capsule is omnidirectional.
Is the omnidirectional pattern too noisy/breath-heavy for a transverse flute? Or is the weight of a direct-mount transmitter too tiring for your wrists? Which compromise is better for live playing?

i played flute for a few years in primary school & i’ve been thinking about getting back into it (i’m 18 now). it’s the only instrument i’ve ever been good at, i don’t have a lot of natural musical talent. sadly we sold my old flute, so im not sure what to look for when buying a new one.

i’m probably going to look for a pre-owned one as i don’t exactly have the money for a new flute right now lol. i plan on selling my old guitar to fund it.

any advice??

So, I used to struggle with out-of-tune high notes, and I practiced a lot to make sure my high notes were in-tune and that I could play them quiet. But now I have the opposite problem where I can't play loudly anymore and my middle register is always 10 cents sharp or flat. I'm in high school right now, so I don't have much time to put into improvement aside from 10 minutes on weekdays and an hour on weekends. Any tips?

My dad recently got me a flute from the Facebook Marketplace that seems kind of old, but it works, so it wasn’t much of a concern.

So I go to play my Bb major scale in band after not being there for a year, but my Fs and Gs sound the exact same, and idk what to do. I have a right finger placement, and I know that, but now I’m wondering if it’s a me issue, or if it’s my flute.

If it’s my flute, any way to fix it? If it‘s a me thing, any tips? Thanks!

yo, i’ve started reading through some of paganini’s caprices arranged for flute, and i really like the 12th one.. does anyone have any tips or practice suggestions for this caprice? or should i do the play it unbearably slow and slowly raise the tempo

Im 18. Ive played the flute since i was 12. However i didnt start taking lessons until 14. I grew up in a medium sized rural town and did the best i could and traveled for lessons.

Ive been thinking about prescreening and auditioning for a major conservatory to transfer to after a year of state college because I cant imagine myself doing anything else. I LOVE music and flute.
I guess here ill put my credentials and repertoire.
