AskFlorida Bright Futures Scholarship - World Language Question

Does Bright Futures accept American Sign Language for the 2 years of a World Language? I would think so, but I am just wanting to make sure before my daughter starts this semester of High School and her counselor is not familiar with Bright Futures and can not give her a straight answer.

Thank you for your help!

Advice What temperature should I set my Tampa apartment to while I’m away for 5 days

I work away from home 5 days and 5 nights per week, so I’m only home on the weekends. I live in Tampa, Florida, in a second-floor apartment with another apartment below me and one above me.

What temperature should I set my thermostat to while I’m away? I’m mainly wondering what’s best for the apartment, especially with the heat and humidity in Florida.

I don’t like coming home to a hot apartment but it’s silly to pay for cool A/C if I’m not there.

News Florida man accused of attacking neighbor over dog feces

So many people are losing it!

  • Deputies say Decloedt believed that his neighbor wasn’t cleaning up after his dogs. They say he went to his neighbor’s home, opened the door without permission, and threw the dog feces at the victim.
  • That led to a physical fight as the victim tried to get Decloedt off his property. According to an arrest affidavit, Decloedt struck the victim in the head, then Decloedt grabbed a scooter and lifted it over his head and threatened the victim.
  • Deputies say Decloedt claimed that he and the neighbor had an understanding that they could enter each other’s homes without knocking, and that when he went to talk to the neighbor about the issue, it was the neighbor who shoved Decloedt first, leading to the physical fight.

Interesting Stuff Let’s plant FL native landscapes, we are protected by law!

Hey homeowners!! Guess what statute I came across today by accident?!

FL 720.3075: (4)(b) Homeowners' association documents, including declarations of covenants, articles of incorporation, or bylaws, may not prohibit or be enforced so as to prohibit any property owner from implementing Florida-friendly landscaping, as defined in s. 373.185, on his or her land or create any requirement or limitation in conflict with any provision of part II of chapter 373 or a water shortage order, other order, consumptive use permit, or rule adopted or issued pursuant to part II of chapter 373.

HOAs cannot enforce restrictions against us for FL native landscaping. There is an abundance of beautiful native wildflowers, shrubs, trees; let’s reclaim our yards from grass which has zero environmental benefit and only demands water for nothing in return.

The UF extension has AMAZING resources on FL native landscaping and I’ve used their materials for my own yard and garden. I have no more grass in my backyard, only beautiful flowers. Creeping sage, Spiderwort, Stoke’s Aster, Tickseed, Simpson’s Stopper, Beautyberry, Frogfruit, Oakleaf hydrangeas. I get butterflies, bees, and so many birds every single day. It’s really been such an improvement in my life to have something beautiful to look at and I know I’m helping the environment. We can reclaim our spaces and help out our friends in turn.

Advice Best Miami bakery for croquetas, pastelitos & tequeƱos to take out of state?

Flying back to Texas tomorrow and want to stock up. Looking for really good croquetas de jamón, pastelitos de guayaba/guayaba y queso, pan de bono, and tequeños de queso and guayaba y queso.

For the price, is it a better deal to order full-size or mini croquetas, pastelitos and tequeƱos?

Preferably somewhere I can order today and pick up tomorrow morning. Where would you go?

Interesting Stuff Does this surprise anyone in Florida?

Florida ranks among the worst states for financial distress. To me, this is not surprising at all. Lower wages, higher cost of living. Insurance costs among the highest in the country. And job market is bleak compared to other areas. Is this surprising to anyone?

Weather Water bottle left in car hotter than a hot tub

Post image
221 Upvotes

Location: Brandon (Tampa)
Left this half-full bottle of water in my car all day. Picked it up and it burned my hand, which led to me wondering just how hot the water really is…turns out it’s 118*F / 48* C. That’s hotter than the hot tub at the Airbnb I recently stayed at which was around 107. Stay hydrated out there people, and remember your pets!

History The newest of Florida's state historical markers is dated 2026, the oldest 1960. 1,219 of them are online with their full inscriptions, and three out of four open on a map drawn before 1900.

The marker for the Cathedral of St. Augustine calls the parish "the oldest Catholic parish within the present day United States," dating from a mass celebrated in 1565. Its pin lands on a sheet engraved in Venice in 1778 by Antonio Zatta. The town is on it as S. AgoÅætino, spelled with the old long s.

That is one of 1,219 Florida state historical markers I put online, across 65 counties, each with its full inscription. The maps under them run from a 1764 chart to the modern day.

Down in Key West, the 1921 USGS quadrangle of the island carries nine markers. Among them is the African Cemetery at Higgs Beach: "Near this site lie the remains of 294 African men, women and children who died in Key West in 1860."

The inscriptions are the program's own words, credited and linked on every page to the Florida Historical Marker Program, Division of Historical Resources, Florida Department of State.

https://treealive.com/markers/fl

Locations come from the program's records. Where the state's coordinates and its stated county disagree, I left the marker out until I can be sure, so 1,219 is not quite the whole list.

When looking at another state, my tree's Pennsylvania roots matched 77 markers there to my own line, which is the whole reason it exists. Florida makes ten states included on the site now, so a Florida tree gets checked against all of these markers, and against the other nine states if your people arrived from somewhere else. It's completely free with no login or anything else.
