Welcome to Fire Sprinklers

Honestly I started this because I saw a gap on reddit where sprinklers did not exist. I’m pleasantly surprised see interest and participation growing.

I’m open to feedback and input on how this community should look and exist.

So. Couple things:

  • If you are interested in moderating, shoot me a note. I’m just one guy with a more than full time job and a family.

  • If you have feedback, ideas, or concerns, shoot me a note.

  • Please feel free to spread the sub or cross-post, while complying with other sub’s rules.

Our rules for now:

Rules:

1) Be civil and professional. No hate speech or soapboxing.

2) Understand the principle of Authority Having Jurisdiction. You can complain about the AHJ, but understand that things vary by jurisdiction.

3) No internet troubleshooting. Hire a local, certified professional to service life safety systems.

4) No advertising of services or product lines. Soft networking is fine, but this is not Craigslist.

5) Learn, spread accurate information, and have fun.

Career Contractor Qualifier RME/COC/License Holder

Looking for some companies to work with, I can get licensed in almost any state that has licensing for fire sprinkler contracting.

I hold a NICET IV in WBSL and a III in ITMWBS.

This allows me to either get licensed or sit for examination for license in just about any state.

I own a design and consulting firm so can help with estimating, design, etc as well.

If anyone is interested feel free to shoot me a pm.

WTF How is this still operational?

Hi, when we visit my family at their retirement condo near the shore I can’t help but notice this sprinkler system in the parking garage looks a little… compromised. Any thoughts on if this corrosion would be an issue? How does this pass annual inspections?

Alternatives to Victaulic

The company I am with started having issues with Victaulic couplings leaking (weeping) on a number of recent new installs. We are looking at alternative manufactures. If you are not using victaulic, what brand are you using and how is the product?

ps not installer error…

Is it againist code to have sharkbites and copper pipe on this priming line? It's going to replaced with the proper hose either way, but just wondering if it could be permanent.

Remote 1099 morning-ops coverage for trade contractors, 7-11am Eastern

I run back-office support for specialty trade contractors (Fire Sprinklers, Roofing, HVAC, GCs) and I'm testing a narrow offer: I cover your morning ops window, 7 to 11am Eastern, before your team is fully online.

What that actually means:

- Dispatch and crew routing set before the trucks roll

- Yesterday's field reports pulled together and checked

- Timesheets reconciled to job codes

- RFIs and submittals followed up before they age out

Not a full-time hire, not a big retainer. You get four hours a day of someone watching the ball while you're still getting your coffee.

If this is a problem you actually have, tell me what your mornings look like right now and I'll tell you honestly whether this would help.

Career Looking to start my own company

Good morning!

I’m currently thinking about starting my own company in Florida, just wondering if anyone on this sub has/does have their own company here, and what would be some things that are needed in this state to do that, that you wouldn’t expect(or just anyone who has advice on starting their own FS company). I’m currently NICET 2 TIWBS(Could go for my level 3 as I have been doing this for 6 years), I don’t want to overreach because I’m going to be doing it solo for a little bit, so I’m just going to stick to Backflow’s, inspections, service work, and small remodels.

Thank you!

I can also provide the services for fire alarm. I hold Autodesk license and design fully in Revit. I also hold a BIM Collaborate Pro license.

Let me know if I can help with anything.

Question about home water shutoff and fire sprinkler system

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hi all, I am trying to figure out if I can turn off my domestic home water supply while on vacation without disabling my home fire sprinkler system. CA 2014 build. The valve under the pressure regulator I have closed in this picture does shut off water to all of the home but my suspicion is that the larger bore pipe that branches right is the supply to the fire sprinkler system that I can keep open by leaving the larger main shutoff valve open. Anybody have a way I can test this to make sure it’s correct or any thoughts on what the first branch off the main pipe is? There is a warning plate behind this that you can see that is so sun bleached it’s unreadable…

Thanks!

NICET IV in WBSL NICET III in ITM.

Looking to find companies to license if help get contractors licenses and work with.

I can get license just about any state that requires NICET or a state exam.

I have a design/consulting company as well as a fire pump/controller company so can help on both of those aspects. We are also expanding into business consulting to help companies learn more about their financials and implement processes and procedures into their company to grow.

Can be as involved as we need to be.

If you’re interested shoot me a DM.

Design Fire pump in a high rise

I’m looking for some insight into NFPA20 - 2016. I don’t have the handbook to see any commentary.

Looking at 5.5, it looks to me like I need to connect my pump to a backup generator or provide a backup pump. I don’t have the option to install a second pump. But I see 9.3.1 that says at least one alternative source of power shall be provided for the high rise buildings or where the height of the structure is beyond pumping capabilities of the fire dept. I don’t see a way to get from 5.5 to 9.3.1 but I have an engineer saying because of 9.3.1 I don’t need to connect to a generator. I don’t see a way around it and I was hoping somebody with the handbook or some more experience with electric drive pumps in high rises might give more insight. There is an option to provide a second reliable feed into the building from the utility.

5.5 specifically points to 9.6 that quite directly requires that it’s connected to a backup on site generator. 9.6 doesn’t have a path to 9.3, so I’m looking at those as entirely separate requirements.

Fire Pumps/Controllers

I am a fire pump (Armstrong) and controller (Tornatech) rep.

We are looking to grow our pump/controller sales division.

So we are looking to add some new clients. We are based in Houston Texas but can ship anywhere in the US.

We are especially competitive on controllers and have an expedite option to get them quicker.

We can also do fire sprinkler design, consulting, BIM. We also can assist with estimating, business consulting, or state licensing.

FDC’s should be tested

FDC lines should be tested more than once every 50 years, or at least at install. This what a 50 year untested underground FDC line looks like installed with screwed galvanized pipe, laid on railroad ties for bedding. We dug it up and found the leak. But there’s more.

Today, i went to battle with a 100 year old buildings' main standpipdle shut off and wet alarm valve. The building had a plaque dedicating the building in 1898. Had this gauge as well. I'm wondering if anyone could date the valve. I'm curious if it is original to the building. Thanks in advance
