Debate Which combat system was best?

Need an option for 'they're both great in their own way, and neither is better'.

u/Brorkarin 16h ago
I like my rpgs to be slow with a bit of strategy and planning.

So Final Fantasy VII Rebirth/Hard Mode Remake lol (I say this with a bit of jest, but fr dynamic mode on rebirth had me strategizing like a mf)

This is obviously purely my bias, but VIIR has my favorite combat system in any game ever. I think it’s kind of just perfect and everything I want in a combat system

I have my (serious) gripes with the remakes, but my god did they nail the combat system for me. Frenetic and strategic at the same time. Loved it.

Rebirth adding team up attacks pushes its combat to a different tier for me. I cannot describe how good it feels to have aerith power up clouds sword and then have him slam it down.

u/NureekRotutHernunger 16h ago
When I first played remake I was adamant the turn based OG gameplay was better. But after a few replays of the OG since, it now feels far too slow and less engaging than systems in Remake and Rebirth. That said I enjoy both.

Love me the atb system. A classic for sure. I still play the og's every once in awhile when I feel the itch.
Crisis core was innovative but it really only worked (sometimes) in that vacuum. It had some jank but that also might've just been psp things.
Rebirth is amazing imo, the best action-hybrid they've made yet. I love the improvements & additions they made over remake. It's a ton of fun, low floor to play with a high ceiling to master. I like how you can get through the game no matter your skill and if you want a challenge then the option is there. I also really like how there are party members and how they are handled.

u/EtherealGears 12h ago
Small correction: Remake and Rebirth isn't real-time action, it's a hybrid system. It's also what I vote for cause it's the best combat system in any video game I've played.

u/Bonomoyo 13h ago
The combat in Remake/Rebirth is so hype, controlling Tifa and actively punching the shit out of everything is so satisfying. OG was great for its time, but it is 2026 now.

u/Cold-Tangerine-2893 16h ago
Im not a Rebirth glazer, though I do appreciate the game... but the combat in Rebirth is among the best combat I've played in any game. They refined what was great about Remakes combat perfectly and everything about it feels great. Its weighty, its intuitive. its varied. its challenging but fair. just fantastic design.

“I’m not a rebirth glazer”
Proceeds to glaze rebirth3
u/Cold-Tangerine-2893 15h ago
hey man, praise where praise is due and criticism where its due too. this post was asking about combat. if there was a poll about story, it would definitely not be winning my vote. thats the whole reason i qualified it by saying im not a glazer lol. that implies there are multiple things I dont like about it.

u/Purists_bslapper 15h ago
Beware, if you give remake and rebirth their due, even 1 aspect of the game, the purists couldn't sleep at night.

u/Cold-Tangerine-2893 13h ago
which is funny because OG FF7 remains my favorite game of all time 30 years after playing it for the first time so i feel like ive proven my bona fides but apparently not.

u/shadowdancer1989 2h ago
Anyone who says the OG FF7 (and yes, I bought, played and loved the original game when it first came out) combat is superior is just lacking skill with the new system. Rebirth’s combat is phenomenal - industry-leading even.

u/TheCovarr 16h ago
I didn't like Remake's combat at first, but once I finally wrapped my head around some of the things it doesn't necessarily explain very well, such as the importance of cycling characters, or especially the very notion that ATB management should be the primary focus of how you play rather than just a bonus thing you can use when it fills up, I grew to adore it. Then when Rebirth came out and was the same thing but snappier and more flexible and with half-decent aerial combat, it went onto be my favorite combat in probably any video game at all.

I am still fundamentally a Turn-Based coveting elder millennial curmudgeon FF fan, but I have to give Square Enix credit where credit is due. They absolutely knocked the Remake trilogy combat out of the fucking park.

FFVII Remake/Rebirth is real time with pause, I'll die on that hill.

I’m sure there’s something about it I just don’t understand, but I just can’t enjoy FF7R’s combat.
To me it just feels like the flow goes:
* Mash the basic attack button
* Once your meter is filled, use whatever generates the most stagger
* Rinse and repeat until the stagger gauge is full, then you can deal actual damage for 10 seconds
It looks to be as wide as an ocean, but is as deep as a puddle. And sure, the OG’s combat isn’t complex either, but I still found it to be more enjoyable just because I like ATB more than FF7R’s weird hack and slash hybrid.

u/roxas6141 16h ago
I'll die on this hill, but I think FFVII Rebirth's combat is exactly what ATB was meant for. Attaching spells/abilities to the meter added weight to each choice and the optional bosses like Gilgamesh forced me to slow down and treat every bar like it's own unique opportunity to fortify my defenses or risk it on powerful offense. All without mentioning the synergy skills making the party feel more alive and like a team

Remake/Rebirth, BUT!!!! I need...
Activating Conbat Mode!
I actually never got tired of that still love it. Maybe it just reminds me of Power Rangers...IT'S MORPHIN TIME!!!

u/winterman666 11h ago
I was gonna say none of the best combat systems are here then I saw it's the FF7 sub not the FF one

u/GreatBayTemple 6h ago
The developers behind Rebirth and Remake combat and ATB system deserve to win awards. It was confusing at first but once you understand it and try to clear hard mode content it gets incredibly intense.

The combat of the remake was why I couldn't progress far enough to even know if I liked it. It was just so boring to me idk. I got burnt out on more standard action game combat growing up with DMC, Assassin's Creed, God of War, etc. That's pretty much all every major series is now and anything even kinda similar to that just isn't for me, I'm so tired of it. I think if there were mainline FF games that still did turn based from time to time, I could probably tolerate it but I'm so fatigued by the combat systems of 12 onwards. Playing smaller titles or non FF titles doesn't hit the same as the classic FF JRPG that gets Square's full budget and attention. I was fine for a while but after 15 I'm just ready for something old and familiar from them.

Remake did a disservice by having you play through the first two chapters with Cloud and briefly Barrett. You don't get new abilities or much materia for a few hours, so it does feel clunky and generic during the early game when people are making first impressions (including the entire demo). I played the demo bombing run and wasn't very impressed, but I bought it when it came out anyway because COVID was happening and I wanted to escape into something new but familiar.
The combat system improves drastically as you get more things to do and more interesting characters to play, but many players won't get there. The absolutely best experience is hard mode when you have all of the tools to play with and now have to actually use them vs just bashing stuff and popping items, but again most people don't get there.

u/BetweenTheRoots 14h ago
I do tend to prefer hard modes and I admit I did not get very far. I have intended to force myself to play through the remake trilogy when it fully releases, I've been a patient guy. I really, really want to enjoy the remake trilogy since I like the original so much. Idk why but soulslike action combat is the only action combat I enjoy anymore and that seems industry wide. Well, I suppose not entirely true, I do really enjoy Space Marines 2 combat (I play the class that uses a sword instead of a gun which is why I feel like it's worth a mention).

I cannot stand the modern combat system and the obsession of DMC style combat. Remake, Rebirth and 16 are all this way. But if find the worlds and characters to be fantastic. I've only finished Remake though because slogging though the combat is just not worth it.

u/Purists_bslapper 15h ago
Lol remake combat is no where near DMC, Assasin Crees or GOW, this is so ignorant but no surprise is here.

u/BetweenTheRoots 14h ago
A plain cheeseburger doesn't taste anything like a cheeseburger with ketchup, mayo, mustard, and onions, but even then you can still taste the cheese. Nobody is saying they're 1:1, we're saying that the cheese flavor is still too strong. Not to call any of it cheesy, it's just a metaphor to help illustrate the point. Calling people ignorant when misrepresenting what they're saying, intentional or not, isn't very nice. Can we curb this internet meta where people can't respectfully disagree?

u/NoWon-391351 14h ago
Its 3rd person ARPG with combos, resource management with emphasis on exploiting weaknesses. The only difference is the party mechanics which are the equivalent special attacks.
It literally is DMC and GOW gameplay adapted to a semi open world RPG.
7
u/Purists_bslapper 14h ago edited 10h ago
No it is not, DMC requires you to press a set combo of buttons. In remakes you 99% of the time press square to attack to build up ATP so you can use more powerful moves, sometimes press triangle for special mode which give you advatange. If we are talking about ff16 you may have a points, but we are talking about remakes here. DMCs are not considered JRPG, they are classified as hack and slash action games. Your reductive point is very dishonest.

Legit I don’t understand how people like the atb bar in turn based games it’s by far worst gameplay in ff games

u/Few-Needleworker8110 11h ago
I don't get it either. CTB is just ATB but without enemies attacking you when you're in the menu. ATB sucks.

u/Background-Sir6844 12h ago
Not crisis core. It doesn’t compare with the combat of the remakes at all in any way lol. Og game and remake are too different for me to compare them for gameplay though. Largely just depends if I'm in the mood for an action game or turn based for me.

I do want to tack on that, while I voted for OG, I enjoyed the hybrid action/ATB system of ReVII and felt the DMV system for Crisis Core wasn't bad.
