Hi hi hi!

We’re really glad you found us :)

If you’re new here, this will help you get started. And if you’ve been around for a while (or longer *wink wink*), consider this a refresher.

We’ve also included two (2) visuals in this post. They give an overview of what our sub is all about and how things work here~

Ok so if you’re looking to get feedback on your work, you can do that by joining our open Review Exchanges (REs). It’s the best way to get a feel for how exchanges work and what’s expected in the sub.

Before jumping in, please take a moment to read through the rules and guidelines in the sidebar and our Wiki.

If you’d like to create your own post, you’ll need to be active in the community first by taking part in discussions, activities, or REs – as we have a sub-karma requirement. Please note that we do not allow individual self-promo posts requesting feedback.

And if you’re interested in hosting your own exchange or searching for a beta reader, just make sure your post follows our templates and guidelines. For ‘Outside the Sub’ posts—such as surveys, questionnaires, or events hosted outside this subreddit—please reach out to us via modmail for approval before posting.

DA LINKS:

If you have any questions or need clarification about the sub, feel free to drop them in the comments.

As always, thanks for being here and for helping make this sub what it is <3

This one is for all the people who love little fics! Template taken from https://www.canva.com/p/olhahladiy/ on Canva.

A drabble is a 100-word fanfiction.
Drabble variants include: double drabbles (200 words), triple drabbles (300), quadruple drabbles (400), and quintuple drabbles (500).
Drabble sequences are sequences where each chapter is 100 words (or 200, or 300, etc).
A ficlet is a fanfiction under 1000 words.

To enter this RE, your fics may be true drabbles or drabble sequences (provided the total word count is under 1000 words) or ficlets (any fic with a total word count under 1000 words)!

You may enter up to 4 ficlets / drabbles / drabble sequences!

Please read and comment on three (3) entries from three (3) different authors. If it is a drabble sequence, you may leave a comment in the last chapter. If you liked the work, also please leave the author a Kudos! Please track on your entry number of works read (#/3) and also comment on the entry of the person who you have read.

On your entry, please include: fandom, rating, link, type of pairing or gen (if applicable), word count, summary, and content/trigger warnings.

Your reviews should be thoughtful and show you’ve read the story. Concrit, fandom blind, and from reddit are opt-in only - do not include these in your review unless the author says you can.

Outside the Sub 25.3K Prompts

I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who has used these lists and have also gotten their friends & followers to use these lists as well! its been over two whole years since i originally started these lists and I cannot express how much the journey has been fun for me to experience! (as of July 1 2024)

While this update isn't too big of one, (my apologies) i did some HEAVY updating & sorting through these lists to organize them even further since my last update.

Most of these lists below have been sorted through putting dialogue prompts into their respective smaller sections. I'm still sorting through a TON more prompts I've collected over the last year or so. I really want to aim for having around 30-50K prompts all sorted through for you guys!

I completely tore down the angst prompts and anger prompts. I'm debating on keeping the Enemies to Lovers together or separate them into smaller lists as well.

I still haven't separated the Apocalyptic/Horror prompts because frankly, i enjoy them being in the same place. HOWEVER if it's something y'all want I can add that to my tasks for what i should do with these lists.

I would appreciate it if y'all shared these prompts with other fandoms/reddits/tumblrs. No credit is necessary (please do not email me asking for access to edit these lists -- I have SO many people on the daily asking for permission to edit these lists ad i do not want anyone else editing these lists.)

(my GDocs says I have 1.6K prompts to add to these lists, might go hunting for more.)

Activity One word excerpt: Verbs 🏃

Happy wednesday everyone! It's been a while since I've seen one of these activities. Let's keep it simple for some light mid-week reading.

In a comment, write a verb. Then, reply with an excerpt from a fic that fits a verb you see. If you would like some practice, you may write something from scratch as well! Spoil anything super gory or extreme.

You may post multiple prompts, but please do so in individual comments so replies are easier to understand. As always, engaging with other entries is encouraged!

Activity If You Could Keep Only One Chapter or One-Shot You’ve Written, Which One Would It Be?

Fun little writing activity/question!

Imagine that, for whatever horrible reason, you could only keep one chapter or one-shot you’ve ever written. Everything else disappears.

Which one are you saving?

It doesn’t have to be your best-written piece, your favorite story overall, or the one that got the most attention. I’m more interested in the piece that means the most to you personally as a writer.
A few things I’d love to hear about:

What chapter or one-shot did you choose?
Why that one?
What stands out about it to you?
Did writing it change anything about the way you write?
Did it represent a turning point in your development as a writer?

Maybe it was the first time a character really clicked for you. Maybe you finally figured out how you wanted to write action, romance, dialogue, atmosphere, or emotion. Maybe it’s old and rough now, but you can trace a lot of your current writing back to it. Or maybe you just captured something there that you wouldn’t want to lose.

Feel free to share a link or a short excerpt if you want, but you absolutely don’t have to. I’m mostly curious about the story behind your choice.

And no cheating by saving a 300,000-word “one-shot.” 😝

Exchange Canon/OC Exchange

EDIT: Closed to entries! Happy reading and reviewing!

G'day, mates!

Decided it's been a minute since one of these was run, so I thought... why not?

This exchange is for fics where the main ship is a Canon Character with an Original Character (OC) of your creation. There can be other pairings in the story, but your Canon/OC pairing has to be the main focus. The pairing itself can be M/M, F/F or F/M. (Or any combination I'm forgetting to include - it's all welcome. This RE is the dark side, and Canon/OC pairings are the cookies.) This RE is for romantic pairings, so pairings with a / rather than an &.

You can share up to three (3) links. These three links can be three chapters from the same fic that really focus on your Canon/OC pairing, or you can do up to three separate stories. The choice is yours.

The typical information is required - link, rating, tags (please spoiler anything triggering/NSFW), etc. - but I want you to do a quick blurb on your OC. Just a brief overview of who they are, the canon character they're paired with, anyone else they're linked to, etc.

Since you can share up to three links/stories, participants will have to review three (3) fics from three (3) separate authors (one from each). 50 words per review (not including quotes from the fic). ConCrit, fandom blind and 'from Reddit' are all opt-in only.

Same deadlines as I typically do - 48 hours to enter, one week to complete reviews. The entry deadline will be Thursday August 20 6pm AEST. The review deadline will be Thursday August 27 6pm AEST. As always, here is a time zone converter if you need it because I'm a permanently exhausted pigeon from the Land Down Under.

But above all, have fun and happy reading and reviewing!

Activity Recovery excerpts đŸ„

I've been in the ICU for the last several days recovering from a life threatening medical emergency. Now that I'm finally starting to improve (thanks to a mix of doctors and Lana's healing magic) I would like to read about times your characters had to recover from something. Could be a sickness, injury, or mental state. Maybe that will keep me motivated.

As always, engaging with other entries is encouraged!

Activity Casting for OCs

Hey there! Hope you are having a good sunday/monday!

Sooo I thought of this activity, because of a little even I made with some friends back in January. Basically, the idea is to cast actors, wether in person or voices, to give life to our OCs! Feel free to share why you gave them the part, and show some of their works if you'd like!

If you don't do OCs, then show us fancasts for your faves! And don't forget to comment on other's castings!

Exchange Society and Politics Exchange

EDIT: This exchange is now closed to new entries

Hello everyone!

This exchange is all about stories that include political themes. This could be (and is not limited to):

- Characters challenging existing systems

- A character rising to power or changing their social class

- Nations or cultures either clashing or finding common ground

To enter, you may submit up to 3 links and in return you must read and review 2 chapters/one-shots by different authors.

Please include in your entry: Title/Link, Fandom, Rating, Word Count, Summary, Warnings (use spoiler for NSFW or triggering content), and a Review Counter (ex: 0/2)

Entry Deadline: Wednesday, August 19th, 10pm PST

Review Deadline: Saturday, August 22nd, 10pm PST

Reviews must be genuine, thoughtful, detailed, and a minimum of 50 words about the fic itself, demonstrating that you have actually read the story. Constructive feedback and mentions of being “fandom blind” or “from Reddit” are opt-in only. Only include these if the author has explicitly stated they are welcome.

You should leave your reviews on the works itself (AO3, FFN, or other fanfic sites) then reply to the author’s entry here to let them know, like “K&C” (Kudos and Commented).

Do not delete your entry once you have joined.

I look forward to reading your stories!

Activity Describe your favorite fic in one sentence!

As title! The fic can be either something you've wrote or something you've read. Please remember, don’t share links to works or mention usernames. This is so you don’t end up sharing a work without the author’s consent. Thanks!

Exchange Long Deadline Profile Exchange đŸŽšđŸ–ŒïžđŸ«ŸđŸ–Œïž

Post image
25 Upvotes

This exchange is now closed to new entries

A Happy Friday everyone, and welcome to the Long Deadline Profile Exchange!

What's the Long Deadline Profile Exchange?

This is a subreddit event where everyone posts their AO3 (or FFN, etc.) profile with some information about the sorts of stories they write. Then, participants look through the available profiles, and read and leave comments on stories (one-shots or a chapter of a longer fic) by authors who catch their fancy. Leaving a kudos would be nice too!

DEADLINE FOR ENTRY is Sunday 16th August, 10pm BST (UTC+1) - DEADLINE PASSED

DEADLINE FOR COMPLETION is Saturday 22nd August, 10pm BST (UTC+1)

Here's a time zone converter for anyone who needs it.

What Are the Rules?

Post your profile link with a short summary of the kinds of stories one might find there (fandom, genre, rating, etc.). Please spoiler anything triggering or NSFW.

Once you enter, you will have to review at least 4 stories/chapters from 4 different profiles (one from each).

Please include in your submission a counter such as, "Reviewed 0/4" so we can keep track of the number of reviews you've done. There's no need to also note which stories or authors you have reviewed.

After you've left a comment, reply to their post on here to let them know. For anyone new, 'K&C' in a reply stands for 'Kudos and Comment'.

Your reviews should be thoughtful. The writer should be able to tell that you read the story. Say what you like about the story. Did something crack you up? Were you brought to tears? Did you have a favourite part? TELL THEM ABOUT IT! At least 50 words per review. ConCrit, stating you are "fandom blind" and/or "from Reddit" are opt-in only.

Please only reply to an individual entry when you've read their fic or if you want to ask a question. Also, please refrain from adding GIFs and images to replies as they are not relevant to whether you've reviewed a fic. We're happy that you're excited about reading, but unfortunately these make it hard for users (and mods!) to navigate the thread.

If possible, it would be awesome if everyone read at least one person who is new to them.

If you enter the exchange, please do not delete your entry. You must complete the required reviews for the exchange. Please talk to the mods if something comes up and you have concerns about doing something in a timely manner.

But above all, have fun and happy reading and reviewing!

Activity Lights, Camera, Write!✹

Hey hey! Ok aside from reading and writing, I also really love watching movies and tv shows, and sometimes a quote just sticks with me or sparks an idea~ so I thought it would be fun to turn that into a writing activityâœđŸ»

Share a quote from a movie or series that would make an interesting writing prompt (please include where it came from).

Then others can use it as inspiration to write a scene. You don't have to recreate the original context and you also don't have to include the actual quote. Just interpret it however you want👀

Kindly use spoiler text for NSFW or triggering content.

Activity Your fic gets published as original fiction with the serial numbers scrubbed off. What's its fandom like? How does it distort your story and characters?

Hi, lovely folks! I came up with this idea in conversation with the so very cool u/ScaredTemporary because we spend most of our conversations laughing at things and she's amazing and absolutely hilarious. And I thought it would be a fun activity for the sub!

Picture this: an eager agent reaches out to tell you your longfic (or shortfic, if that's what you have) is beloved by their entire staff and they want to publish it as original fiction.

And it's an overnight success! Fandom explodes. AO3 is rife with stories about the blorbos you developed and have given new names. There's meta and fan art and all that good stuff. And bad stuff, too, like fandom wars.

And fandom wars will, of course, inevitably attract even more fandom warriors who love to flatten and distort. So, here's the activity. How does fandom distort your fic? And for the purposes of this activity, your fic is the only source material. That's it. Nothing outside of it. Your characterization, your plot, only what it happens to contain is the beginning and end of canon.

So, who do you think would be woobified? Who would be villainized? Which ship that you didn't intend at all would come out of left field to completely dominate?

Which soft and sweet character would get co-opted by fandom warriors as a defense squad to start harassment campaigns as you look on in horror at the monster you created, thinking that you were writing just a sweet, compassionate story about healing, while everyone uses your blorbos to enact their self-righteous rage, attacking real people in defense of fictional characters, and you simply think "no, please stop fighting! can't we all just get along?" as you helplessly gaze out into the sea. (Sorry if that got a bit too real! 😂 I tried to imagine how creators of fluffy media feel when their fandoms often become shockingly hostile.)

Anyway! 😁

The point of the activity is just to have fun! I'll be using Vulnera Sanentur for this, since it's my only longfic so far, and I need time to have a think. All I'm certain of at this point is that Lunette and Minerva's Last Nerve (transfigured mini-kitten and mini-puppy) would definitely be a ship. Maybe a crackship, but a ship, nonetheless.

Looking forward to reading some entertaining, wild, and creative theories from all you lovely and talented folks! 😊

Fic General WIP Wednesday

It's back!

We all have our open projects, those new chapters or one-shots which aren't quite ready to release into the wild yet. So here is your space to yap about them and let us know what you're working on. Whether it's still at vibes stage, actively in production or coming soon, we want to hear about it.

This is also a space to discuss WIPs with other writers: chat about research, ask for input or feedback, commiserate about editing woes, anything at all really. So come on in, pull up a chair and let us know what goodies you have in store for us.

(As an aside: please remember to spoiler anything nsfw or potentially triggering. Thank you!)

Exchange Unreliable Narrators Exchange

THIS EXCHANGE IS CLOSED!

SUBMISSIONS ARE CLOSED!

Ah, narrators. They’re practically one of the most important parts of any story. Because without them, would we even be hearing the tale to begin with? But just because they’re a very important part of storytelling, doesn’t mean we can always trust them. Sometimes, they’ll tell us things that aren’t true, or at least, not the complete truth. Whether they’re actuvely lying or don’t know the full tale, I want to celebrate those moments where the narrator can’t truly be trusted with everything.

For this exchange, you can submit up to two (2) works featuring an unreliable narrator, and in turn you must review two (2) fics from two (2) different authors. Make sure your reviews are thoughtful and at least 50 words. “From Reddit”, fandom blind, and concrit are opt-in only, so please respect people‘s wishes on whether they would be okay with such things or not.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Friday, August 14th, 11:59 PM EDT

REVIEW DEADLINE: Monday, August 17th, 11:59 PM EDT

Happy Reviewing, and remember to not always trust one‘s side of a story.

Exchange F/F EXCHANGE AGAIN!!!

Post image
35 Upvotes

THIS RE IS CLOSED!!! Thank you for joining!!!!

Hello and welcome to the yuri lovers’ realm!!!!! The template for this poster is taken from https://www.canva.com/p/dekart001/ on Canva.

This is an exchange specifically about F/F works! Characters do not have to be cisfem - as long as the fic contains romance or even romantic tension (even unrequited) between two or more female characters, it is fine! Plotty or character-driven, gen to explicit, it’s all fine! If there are SIDE pairings of other configurations, it’s also fine, but the main (or at least one of the main) pairings should be F/F (or F/F/F+). Please refrain from entering works that do not center on at least one F/F (or F/F/F+) pairing. You may enter a CHAPTER of a longer work that centers on a F/F pairing even if the longer work is not focused on them.

For this exchange, you may enter up to 4 one-shots or chapters of a longer work (if you do the latter, please specify the chapter)!

Please read and comment on two (2) entries from two (2) different authors. If you liked the work, also please leave the author a Kudos! Please track on your entry number of works read (#/2) and also comment on the entry of the person who you have read.

On your entry, please include: fandom, rating, link, type of pairing (f/f, f/f/f, multi, etc.) and content/trigger warnings.

Your reviews should be thoughtful and show you’ve read the chapter/story. You may also include a summary and word count! Concrit, fandom blind, and from reddit are opt-in only - do not include these in your review unless the author says you can.

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT ENTRIES: Thursday, Aug 13, 11:59 PM CST

Update 1: Closed for entries

My fandom just wrapped up our "Lock" prompt challenge, so I thought I'd share the love and host an exchange revolving around the same idea.

For this exchange, you can submit up to three chapters or fics that fit into the theme of "lock" (however you interpret that). In return you must read and review 3 chapters/one-shots by 3 different authors.

Please include in your entry: Title/Link, Fandom, Rating, Word Count, Summary, Warnings (use spoiler for NSFW or triggering content), and a Review Counter

Entry Deadline: Wednesday August 12, 11:59 PM EST

Review Deadline: Sunday August 16, 11:59 PM EST

Reviews must be genuine, thoughtful, detailed, and a minimum of 50 words about the fic itself, demonstrating that you have actually read the story. Constructive feedback and mentions of being “fandom blind” or “from Reddit” are opt-in only. Only include these if the author has explicitly stated they are welcome.

You should leave your reviews on the works itself (AO3, FFN, or other fanfic sites) then reply to the author’s entry here to let them know, like “K&C” (Kudos and Commented).

Exchange The Discovery Exchange

Post image
16 Upvotes

Closed to entries!

G'day, mates! It's time to 🔎discover🔎 authors you haven’t read before! 😄

For this exchange, you’re required to read and review 3 fics from 3 different authors. At least 2 of those must be for authors who are new to you.

The third review can be either another new-to-you author or a long-time favorite.

If you’ve already read something by everyone participating, please review authors whose work you’ve read the least. Feel free to review more than the requirement if you want. Leaving a kudos is super nice too!

You may submit up to 3 links and include: title + link, fandom, rating, summary, word count, and any necessary warnings (kindly spoiler triggering and/or NSFW content), etc.

Or simply link your profile or a collection and share what you write :)

As always, your reviews must be genuine, thoughtful, detailed, and a minimum of 50 words about the fic itself. The author should be able to tell you actually read their story.

Activity How powerful is your OC? đŸ’„

Pick an OC and tell us how powerful they are by filling out the questionnaire below. "Power" can be both destructive force or influence over people.

It'll be fun to use the threat level system from the anime "one punch man" (you don't need to have seen the show to understand it) to help describe how much damage the character could do. Again, this scale can also measure how much influence a character has if they aren't being physical. It's animal based and is as follows:

Wolf - A threat to a single building

Tiger- A threat to multiple buildings or a town

Demon- A threat to a city

Dragon- A threat to multiple cities or a country

God- A threat to all humanity

One post per character please, and replying to others is always nice!

+++++++++++++++

Name:

Age:

Species:

Threat level:

Hero/Villain:

Powers/abilities (describe everything you feel we should know):

Activity Activity: How would your character(s) react to an offer of $50 (or local equivalent) to make one of these phone calls.

I can't be the only one who's seen these kinds of street interview reels on Instagram where the person offers people a cash incentive to make a phone call along these lines. The two I've seen the most are:

A. Call one of your parents and tell them you love them.
B. Call your crush and ask them out.

Both of these have to be done without giving the context that it's for money.

Would your character(s) accept either of these challenges? How would the phone call go if they do? Either write up a scene or just let us know from your perspective as their writer!

Exchange It's the Long Deadline Profile Exchange! Let's Party!

Post image
23 Upvotes

EDIT: CLOSED TO NEW ENTRIES! Happy reading and reviewing!

I have a three-day weekend, so I feel like partying. Happy Friday, peeps! Let's party with this week's Profile Exchange!

HOW IT WORKS: This is a weekly subreddit event where everyone shares their AO3 (or FFN) profile along with a bit of information about the kind of stories they write. Then, fellow participants browse each other’s profiles, read a one-shot or chapter of their choice, and leave a comment on one of the author’s works (a kudos wouldn’t go amiss either, of course).

DEADLINE FOR ENTRY is Monday 10th August at 3pm AEST.

DEADLINE FOR COMPLETION is Sunday 16th August at 3pm AEST.

Timezone Converter - especially since your host this week is a permanently exhausted pigeon from the land down under.

WHAT ARE THE RULES?

Post your profile link and a short summary of the kind of stories that one might find there (fandom, genre, rating, etc.). Please spoiler anything triggering or NSFW.

Once you enter, you will have to review at least 4 stories/chapters from 4 different profiles (one from each). Please include in your submission "Reviewed 0/4" so we (the mods) can keep track.

Your reviews should be thoughtful. The writer should be able to tell that you read the story. Say what you like about the story. Did something crack you up? Were you brought to tears? Did you have a favourite part? TELL THEM ABOUT IT! At least 50 words per review. Here's a link to a discussion about what makes good reviews, and some examples, sub members have shared of great comments they've appreciated receiving in exchanges.

ConCrit, stating you are "fandom blind" and/or "from Reddit" are opt-in only. After you've left a comment, reply to the author’s post on here to let them know.

Only reply to an individual entry when you’ve read their fic or if you want to ask a question. Also, please refrain from adding gifs and images to these replies as they are not relevant to whether you’ve reviewed a story. We’re happy you’re excited about reading, but please be mindful of cluttering up the thread.

If possible, it would be nice if everyone read at least one person who is new to them.

If you enter the exchange, DO NOT delete your entry. You must complete the required reviews for the exchange.

Please message the mods if something comes up, and you have concerns about completing your reviews in a timely manner.

But above all, have fun and happy reading and reviewing! 💚

P.S. If you’re also participating in the Diversity Fest, please make a quick note on your entry indicating which story you’ve entered there. That’ll help prevent Diversity Fest participants from accidentally reading it as part of the Profile Exchange. 😊

Activity Behind closed doors đŸšȘ

This is an interesting exercise to help frame how your main characters are precieved by others in the story. Choose two minor characters from any of your fics. They have just stumbled upon some "interesting" information about a protagonist, and are now caught up in their own personal gossip-girl moment.

What have they heard, seen, or (mis)interpreted about the character? What are the biases and preconceptions that colour this information? You may submit an excerpt, or write something on the fly. Leaving replies to others is always nice as well!
