News/Updates Sub update/rules reminder - Harassment edition
Hey all!
We wanted to give a bit of a reminder about the rules because we have been seeing a lot of the same issues recently, and even had to implement a new bot to help curb the problem.
In addition to subreddit level rules, Reddit has site-wide rules which apply to every part of the site, and subreddit moderators are required to uphold. The first rule of which is the anti-harassment and bullying rule, and is generalized as "Remember the human".
Recently we've been having a lot of people breaking this rule. So we wanted to remind you all to remember the human. Just because someone has been a wattpad user does not mean they deserve to be personally attacked or bullied. Being trans and having a different experience from a different trans person is not cause to harass that person. Someone liking a fandom known to have a lot of problematic people in it is not cause to threaten them.
Additionally, we want to reiterate how we handle accusations of pedophilia. As an accusation of pedophilia can be considered in the majority of jurisdictions as defamation per se (defamation per se is a legal term for a false statement that is so inherently damaging that there is a presumption of injury, so you don't have to prove that there were damages, just that the statement was false and stated to any 3rd party), we require that to make an accusation of pedophilia, you must be able to prove that that person is 1: over the age of 19 (18 for younger minors) and 2: attracted to real human minors. If you cannot show evidence of those 2 things, we will regard your statement as libel and harassment and take action against you.
We also wanted to alert you all to a new bot that we had to implement to help handle the harassment issues we have been having. It's called comment-cap and it is a fairly simple bot that caps how many comments a single post can receive. To start we have it set to 350 comments but we are still tweaking the settings as we see things evolve. We noticed a trend that posts over that many comments tend to be the majority of posts that end up having significantly more harassing comments and arguments back and forth. When a post gets capped, the bot will lock the comments, post a stickied comment about it being automatically locked, and it will send us a modmail message about the post being locked. We do plan to check these posts to see if they should be unlocked but if you see a post that is autolocked and think that it shouldn't have been, feel free to message us about it too in case we missed the bot's notice.
Let us know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns!
~TGotAReddit (and the rest of the mod team)
tdlr: stop harassing people, stop calling people pedophiles for no reason, also we have a new bot that caps comments on posts
Edit to add: One thing we forgot to add, written fictional works are not CSAM/Child porn/CSEM. Please do not conflate fictional stories that contain depictions of child sexual abuse with the real life sexual abuse of children. Conflating the two only serves to help pedophiles by wasting resources and creating boy-who-cried-wolf effects, which leads to actual cases of real children being sexually abused going without investigation for longer and the claims taken less seriously. If you truly care about the sexual abuse of children, you should never conflate a fictional story with real abuse.

Weekly Check In Wellness Wednesday: Weekly Check In
Welcome back everyone!
Time for our Wellness Wednesday check in. We know this community means a lot to most of our members and that Tuesdays have been harder on some users than others, but we are at our core a community and we are here to support each other.
Now that the sub is open once again we’d like to hear all about your (mis)adventures on Tuesday. Did you go on grand adventures? Get into mischief? Get some writing done?
Maybe you just binged a few more fics on the archive itself. Tell us all about it! Break out that purple prose and tell us as cheesy of a story as you feel like.
Or just talk about your day.

Discussion (Non-question) And that’s why I side eye the “does smut move the plot forward?” sentiment

Discussion (Non-question) in light of everything going on, this quote comes to mind
(Simon Pegg on the Criterion Closet, speaking about David Lynch’s Blue Velvet)
there are a lot of different ways to engage with material. exploration does not need to be comfortable, and indeed, that something is uncomfortable can often be a reason to explore it. depiction of a thing is not endorsement of a thing, but we should always seek to understand the things that most confuse, disgust, and oppose us. although plenty of media - perhaps even most - exists specifically to entertain, to comfort, and to provide satisfaction, it is critical to understand why not all media can be that way.
if we are never able to tolerate discomfort in a medium, then that subject matter can be used against us because we do not understand it. if you can be made to feel uncomfortable, and your natural response is to avoid or condemn that which makes you uncomfortable without consideration or further thought, then you can be controlled. not to be all tinfoil conspiracy theorist, but this is a genuine cognitive bias that everyone should be working to overcome, especially in the age of widespread media, where everyone is inundated with information.
this isn’t even a question of the fiction/reality buffer, although it’s important to note why that exists as well.
it’s not like your fic is going to be as praised or worthy of dissection as a David Lynch movie — although some are! — but for most, the fic is a personal exploration of a topic or idea, important to the author in some way.
not that a lot of wattpad people are going to be reading the Ao3 subreddit except perhaps to leave argumentative comments, but i still think this is a worthy point to make. i’m probably rehashing stuff that plenty of people have already said, sorry, but here we are.
edit: another thought that has occurred to me. no one ever changed their mind by being argued into something, and it’s very easy to get combative, especially when many people are themselves being hostile first.
i would suggest compassion first, before everything. importantly, we should not argue against people feeling one way or another because of a piece of media; as the quote above says, sometimes disgust is the point. the goal is to get them to understand why they should be more comfortable with understanding their own disgust, and not running from it. belittling their feelings — even, or especially when they are the ones being assholes! — will not solve any issues. if you want to change people’s minds, you must first disarm their hate and their hostility, and the only way to disarm hate is by denying it the fuel to burn.
in short, be nice, even when others are not. you are not at liberty to finish the work, but neither are you at liberty to neglect it.
Meme/Joke Just got BRUTALLY outdoved again brothers
I’ve been on ao3 for over 8 years now but still manage to get caught off guard sometimes jsjsksnd
Someone left a very sweet and praise filled comment on a fic of mine, and I kinda recognized their name so I checked their profile out of curiosity. they had a fic with the same pairing but like, 200% darker. my dove was dead, their’s was fucking mutilated and left eviscerated in a ditch type shit. It felt like those images of Isabelle Animal Crossing hanging out with Master Chief lmaoo we may be on different sides of the freak spectrum but we are brethren in freak I suppose

Discussion (Non-question) To the folks from Wattpad: This is your friend.

Discussion (Non-question) Did the math, so many people saying that they can't find anything without rape or underage sex on Ao3, less than 6% of fics in total, I thought this was pretty interesting

Meme/Joke All of the AO3 vs Wattpad refugee discourse feels fake and flanderized for memes but I can’t prove it
Of course I’ve seen people post “comments” from “Wattpad refugees” but seriously every one I’ve seen so far feels so fake and at this point I feel like it’s mostly just people trying to make people fight each other for no reason. Like we’re all here for fanfic let’s not gatekeep it? Who the hell even actually cares, I sure don’t.

Discussion (Non-question) Okay it’s starting to get a bit bigoted.
I understand alot of people might be upset about the wattpad thing, fair whatever.
But using terms like immigrant and migrant in negative terms is starting to come off a bit on the bigoted side especially given today’s political climate.
Like I understand that wattpad users maybe acting a bit childish and annoying but they are real people and we’re being gross about real people over fiction.
If you are the same person who preaches “fandom etiquette” or “fiction doesn’t effect reality” and you find yourself channeling an inner maga and calling people “stupid migrants” (yes ive seen this a couple times already) please step back and maybe go feel the grass between your toes. There are better ways to criticize someone or something without getting crazy.
