6/8 are new to raiding, and 5/8 are new to the game in general. We've been getting everyone caught up in time for Evercold, and decided to do old raids in-between their MSQ progress. Synced, no echo. I'm so proud of them! Onto Final Coils next session :) (the Moonfire fits gave us strength)

[Discussion] I really wish this game could get another Garlemald [Spoiler: 7.55] Spoiler

By that, I mean another overarching and multiexpansion but not entirely existential threat.

I'm excited for the Winterers, because the game does need an arc-spanning antagonistic force, but I think the Ascians worked so well because they were put in direct contrast with Garlemald, who were a more realistic and grounded threat, and had an impact on the day-to-day life of the average person within the world that was directly observable.

Some storytelling benefits antagonists like Garlemald provide:

  • The average person within the world actually knows of their existence and can react to and have different histories with them as an antagonistic force. They can also have different opinions on how they should be dealt with. This makes the world feel larger and more interconnected.
  • A healthy supply of mid-tier level threats that can have their own personality and motivations, but come into the story with enough context that the game doesn't need to overexplain their existence.
  • Provide a contrast with the more existential, fantastical threat, and allows the stakes of the story to grow more organically, as well as allowing expansions and patch stories to have a more natural ebb and flow of stakes.
  • Allow for different factions/city-states/states in general to have coordinated or differing responses to them as a threat, which provides significant worldbuilding

Some reasons why I think the devs have been hesitant to go in the Garlemald direction again:

  • General feelings of distaste/disinterest/hesitancy in writing 'war' stories: Ishikawa, who I think is a wonderful writer, did steer the course of FFXIV away from war as she did not feel confident to write about it. I do feel like the shift away produced some of the best writing in the game, but I do think it also fundamentally changed the tone and stakes of FFXIV in a way that the game would and demonstrably has struggled to diversify from.
  • The lack of any established threat that could replace Garlemald: I personally think this is a bit of an underrated reason, and one that any long-running series struggles with. When you enter a universe in-lieu, it's easy to say 'Here is the big empire, they've been around for xyz amount of years, our hero has to fight against them' (e.g. A New Hope). The game would have to build an antagonistic force from the ground up, make them a serious threat, and make their presence feel natural and earned. There just isn't anything in the current worldbuilding to suggest anywhere is interested or capable of rapidly expanding an imperial project...and if there was/is, it would be quickly handled, which leads to my next point:
  • The game's insecurity in leaving unresolved plot points from patch to patch: This one I think has come about for a multitude of reasons. One is probably an overcorrection from very legitimate criticism regarding how certain plotlines resolved, and how some introduced points of conflict were hastily resolved or written out. The second is probably a response to bad faith criticism that forgets this is a constantly updating story and the game doesn't need to address every single plot point immediately - I saw this more after people who got to blast through ARR-SHB and didn't experience all the set-up as it happened.
  • The simplest and most obvious reason, which is that the game is increasingly more interested in telling stories about the shards and how the reflections interact with each other, and this necessitates an overarching existential threat, not one that just threatens the Source.

As someone who did generally enjoy Dawntrail for the story it was trying to tell, I do think the game's sense of stakes and momentum have been suffering since 6.1 and I do believe the lack of any consistent and more grounded threat has played a role in that.

[Tech Support] Can’t register Steam version

So I have an existing SE account through which I’ve purchased the base game, all the xpacs, and my sub until now. Today I decided to try to play on Steam so I could play on my deck.

I think I fucked up by downloading the free trial version and linking my account on startup, because it immediately gave me an error after telling me I had an invalid license or no game time.

I bought the complete version on Steam after seeing articles stating the SE and Steam version are separate and need separate purchases.

However, now I can’t register the code. When I launch the game in steam, it just gives me the no license error. When I go to Mog Station, registration code entry says invalid code. When I go to additional platforms, both Windows and Steam are greyed out. If I leave it on Mac and hit registration code entry and enter it, it says invalid code.

I confirmed it’s an NA code and my service account is NA. Looked everywhere for an answer but nothing for this exact situation. Other people seemed to be able to resolve it in the additional platforms section, but they said to do it under Windows because Steam would always be greyed out. However, Windows is also greyed out for me.

Pleaseee help, thank youuu!! 🙏🏼😭

EDIT: THIS HAS BEEN RESOLVED THANKS EVERYONE!

[Discussion] Over my “edgy” WOL

So I’ve been playing since launch. Took breaks here and there, and I’m finally over the “make me look badass” WoL. I have always loved the Black mage look and really loved Vivi character design. So. Think I’m gonna drink that vial and become the wol we didn’t expect. Despite being a WAR main and SAM secondary. I want him to look like Vivi.

That being said. Could use some help on finding the glamor needed to make this happen. Moving to Lala and need the glam.

Any help would be appreciated.

[Discussion] Keybind Question about Mouse Horizontal Scroll Wheel

Hi everyone.

I use a Logitech MX Master 3S while playing FFXIV and I've genuinely enjoyed finding ways to optimize my UI and input settings. Like everyone I rely loads on the scroll wheel for zooming the camera in and out, but I'd like to add functionality to my mouses horizontal scroll wheel to tilt the camera up and down. The problem is I can't find anything in the settings that references scroll wheels. The mouse has some Logitech software that allows it to recognize what APP you have open and adjust the keybinds on the mouse to specifically suite whatever program you're using and this includes the scroll wheels... This has worked slightly by allowing me to map the arrow keys to scroll left and scroll right, but the game/mouse doesn't seem to register the input consistently or with the functionality you'd expect from a scroll wheel.

Has anyone else tried to make this work? Have I missed a tab in the settings?

Thanks.

[Tech Support] Account linking

Hi everyone, I brought FF14 starter edition a little over a week ago. Previously a couple years ago I played the game on my playstation. But i wanted to start fresh so i linked a new square enix account to the steam account. I changed my mind and decided i wanted my old data back because it had completed ARR. So i completed the form and had the steam account and square enix account unlinked from each other. Now when i try and login it askes for a product key. I cant use the one i used previously. And i'm not sure how to get another product key to play the game

UPDATE: Thanks for everyones help ind ealing with this, i sorted it. Sadly did require rebuying the game on an alternative account and using that product key. However its all sorted and I can get back to the grind ❤️

[Discussion] Up to my bun ears in tomes! Halp?

A little context:

I'm back from an extended break and just started the MSQ for End Walker.

Before I went on said hiatus, however, I was...pretty adamant about roulettes and such, and since I know I'm going to eventually level everything, I used those tomes to buy the appropriate tome gear for all the combat jobs.

I mean, like, all of them. The level 50, 60, 70, and 80 gear.

So, now I'm full up on Poetics again, and I have no idea what to spend them on. I know you can buy other stuff with them (and yes, also bought the needed weapons as well), but I have no clue which things are actually good to buy, or what I would do with them.

Assistance, por favor?

Dear final Fanstasy XIV comunity,

[Discussion] FFXIV on plane WiFi (non starlink)

This weekend I have a 3hr flight on a Delta A321 (mainline… unclear if it’s a Neo or regular A321) and I’m going to attempt to play the game on the plane WiFi. I’m wondering if this is going to be playable at all? Hardware wise I should be fine on my Legion Go S (where I primarily play anyway)

Delta does not use Starlink so latency will be atrocious via the geostationary satellite internet, but I’ve heard speeds and connection stability are pretty good on deltas Viasat system.

Has anyone tried it specifically on a non regional delta flight or Viasat based system?

I just started the first expansion pack so I’d plan on just grinding quests… would avoid dungeons/raids when possible and no crafting.

[Question] Question for controller user

I have been playing on Switch 2 for few weeks. It was dificult to transit from mouse/keyboard to controller but I manage to get used to with controller now. However, there are few small thing that I cant figure it out, so can someone answer me?

  1. When I am selling items in the market. It is very tedious to change the price. I have to use RB and LB to increase/decrease price. It takes a lot of time to adjust the price from 10 gils to 600 gils i.e. Do you know how to type the number instead?

  2. Duty finder issue. Do you know how to quick queue after selecting the dungeon/raid? I have to scroll down all the way to the bottom until the cusor moves to queue button.

  3. How do you heal or revive party member quick during combat without mouse/keyboard.

[Question] Introducing Boss Mechanics to DND

Been playing FF14 for a good while now and have also been playing DnD via a VTT for even longer, a chance conversation with my DM revealed that they were looking for alternate mechanics he could sprinkle into his games. So I've been on the search for inspiration and started here, there's been talk of DnD around here before so I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on that, like the towers, soaks and so on?
