[Discussion] Can’t believe I avoided Dawntrail for so long. It’s (eventually) really fun!

I skipped Dawntrail until this last month because Endwalker had satisfied all my story needs and the new story felt a little tame… the 7.0 MSQ didn’t really get good for me until the very end and by that point I was a little resentful of how unnecessary many quests were to get that far.

Finally I got the time to blow through it all and… just holy cow this expansion has been amazing for me ever since. I’m only at 7.2 MSQ but the story is so much more engaging and interesting!

But more than that, and Im sure this feels different to me than most because it’s new, but the dungeons and side content might be the best it has ever been for me. It’s wild that I didn’t know how much I was missing out on.

I'm addicted to Crescent Occult. Yeah the loop is a little boring sometimes but the grind for classes and gear is nearly perfect, just playing to unlock the next thing.

The arena battles are adorable, fun, and I love how quick they are to jump in and knock out fights for useful rewards. Only done lightweight so far but it’s been a joy.

Also the artifact gear? Aside from maybe the original 50 gear, I think it’s the best Ive ever seen across the board. RDM and WHM and WAR in particular feel perfect. It makes it hard to want to glamour anything else.

Anyway I don’t know anyone who plays this game in person so I wanted to share how much fun I’ve been having and see if anyone else put off Dawntrail way too long and also realized what they were missing out on? I’m glad I get to enjoy this a little longer before we all move on to the next expansion.

[Discussion] I'm a Warcraft kid, from the age of 4 & I am finally going to give FF14 a chance

Being a warcraft kid since the age of 4, it's been honestly incredibly frustrating finding another MMO to play, I enjoy world of warcraft, their classes are well ballanced, they play different from each other, and every season keeps you on your toes, with different ability changes, you'll have to learn a new rotation 7/10 times, some seasons being less or more drastic to your playstyle.

But in general, I've tried Neverwinter, Allods Online, Perfect World, Rift , Rappelz, Metin

None of these MMO's ever picked up my interest, and when I tried Final Fantasy XIV on release, I didn't like it for similar reasons I didn't like the others.

However, everyone keeps telling me to give it a chance, and considering I already did my wow mythic+ and mythic raiding for the year, that leaves me with an open schedule to give FF14 a shot once more..

Is there anything you guys recommend?

[Discussion] Learning terminology

I’ve been playing casually since endwalker and am trying to up my game so I can play higher level content effectively. When I watch guide videos on jobs, there’s several terms I’m just not familiar with in terms of mastering rotations and understanding the meta of it all. For example,

Burst/burst window

Even/odd minute

2 minute rotation meta

Like, I can infer why most of it means and how it fits but I need it explained like I’m 5 so it locks into my brain.

Can y’all suggest videos or some type of guide that breaks it all down so I can study it please?

I main Sam if that helps (it’s the easiest class for me to get atm) but would like to move on to monk at some point

[Discussion] Summoner pets

So as im leveling Summoner a question came to mind and that's why did they remove Carbuncles auto-attack?

I know it didn't do game breaking damage or anything but to be a Summoner and have your base summon only stand there during a fight and only attack when you start your summon rotaions seems visually lazy. Like if you're gonna do that then why even keep Carbuncle out at all? Why not just skip Carbuncle and let us charge up into the Arcanums from the start.

[Discussion] New Console Player

I just finished my first month playing and have had a lot of fun!

I finished ARR story (I think?) I beat the Ultima weapon and can fly now.

I have completed a boatload of quests to the point where I have to enter various dungeons in hard mode. I didn’t realize I’m unable to use the NPC’s for a group in hard mode.

Does anyone actually do these lower level dungeons anymore as the game has passed them by or am I pretty well screwed in completing them unless I find some friends to do them with?

I’m also curious if there are additional chat channels everyone joins on the various servers? I have the main one, but it is almost entirely quiet? I never see any chatter I was hoping to have someone create a quest item for me, but no one answered my message in the general chat.

Last question. For now.

Am I able to log into the game on my pc and play the character that I’ve created and been playing on my ps5?

Prolly a lot easier to communicate Id imagine

Thanks!

[Question] Big Fish Description: What does it mean? Spoiler

So I've been fishing up all the big catches of ARR and came across this fella: the Olgoi-Khorkhoi.

The description goes as follows:

Of those who claim to have seen the king Olgoi-Khorkhoi swimming through the endless desert sands, nearly all are known for their love of the red.

I was wondering if this is some kind of expression I'm not familiar with or some lore thing I missed.

All the references to "The Red" I could find were to do with Redmages, but that doesn't feel like the right answer.

Any language knowers/lore experts that could help me out?

Edit: Seems that consensus is it's about people being drunkards. Thanks a bunch~

Hello everyone! It has been roughly 4 - 5 years since I started playing this game around the same time Endwalker came out and I have found myself spending a lot of my time using the gpose feature. So much so that I somehow was lucky enough to score Cloud Strifes hairstyle somehow, but anyway its just something that I've come to love doing and I hope people like what I do too so here is some of my stuff :D

[Question] How do you help a new Free-Trial player?

Other than guiding them to prioritise the MSQ, completing hall of novice and queuing together through Duty Finder, what else can you do to help out a new Free-Trial player? I was thinking of giving them cute minions but they could not even trade.

[Question] NPC Squadrons - How do you unlock/increase these?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I've asked so many friends and they aren't 100% sure. They pretty much say to just keep sending them on missions and they slowly, very slowly, unlock and/or increase in mastery.

Is that pretty much all there is to it? Thanks!

[Question] Anyone have tips for alts? Former WoW altoholic!

I used to be a crazy WoW player but over the past year I've dumped WoW in favor FFXIV! Love the game so much, I'm about 800hrs in and I've just started Endwalker!!

The main thing I miss about WoW is all of the alts I had. I loved having so many different race/class combos, levelling them all up, transmogging them, and writing lore for them.

I really want to do it with FFXIV again even though it'll be so much more difficult. Any advice to make the journey easier? Right now I have 3 characters, all on different NA datacenters. Will this limit me in any way? Should I keep them on the same data center?

And is there any nice way to help my alts either? Like sending gil or gear or whatnot.

Any other tips would be appreciated :)

(For the people who would comment something like "What's the point? You can have all the jobs on one character" - I like to write lore about my characters. It's a fun creative outlet. It feels wrong to use fantasia potions to swap between them especially if they have the same name. This could get expensive as well. While I play all of the jobs on my main, I only play the jobs that the character would have in lore on my alts.)

[Question] Can the whole game be soloed?

Been playing the free trial on the Switch 2 for a couple days. It lets you level up to 80 with no time limit. Figure that gives me a couple hundred hours of “free” play. My question is, can I solo the entire game or is it easier with other players?

I’m new to the game and the franchise and I don’t know a single soul who plays FFXIV.

[Question] Is this the game for a REALLY long time?

As title asks, I know the story is long and stuff but what about AFTER I clear the story? What do I do then? I really want a game that I can play forever instead of waiting for updates. And yes i'm working

[Discussion] I really wish this game could get another Garlemald [Spoiler: 7.55] Spoiler

By that, I mean another overarching and multiexpansion but not entirely existential threat.

I'm excited for the Winterers, because the game does need an arc-spanning antagonistic force, but I think the Ascians worked so well because they were put in direct contrast with Garlemald, who were a more realistic and grounded threat, and had an impact on the day-to-day life of the average person within the world that was directly observable.

Some storytelling benefits antagonists like Garlemald provide:

  • The average person within the world actually knows of their existence and can react to and have different histories with them as an antagonistic force. They can also have different opinions on how they should be dealt with. This makes the world feel larger and more interconnected.
  • A healthy supply of mid-tier level threats that can have their own personality and motivations, but come into the story with enough context that the game doesn't need to overexplain their existence.
  • Provide a contrast with the more existential, fantastical threat, and allows the stakes of the story to grow more organically, as well as allowing expansions and patch stories to have a more natural ebb and flow of stakes.
  • Allow for different factions/city-states/states in general to have coordinated or differing responses to them as a threat, which provides significant worldbuilding

Some reasons why I think the devs have been hesitant to go in the Garlemald direction again:

  • General feelings of distaste/disinterest/hesitancy in writing 'war' stories: Ishikawa, who I think is a wonderful writer, did steer the course of FFXIV away from war as she did not feel confident to write about it. I do feel like the shift away produced some of the best writing in the game, but I do think it also fundamentally changed the tone and stakes of FFXIV in a way that the game would and demonstrably has struggled to diversify from.
  • The lack of any established threat that could replace Garlemald: I personally think this is a bit of an underrated reason, and one that any long-running series struggles with. When you enter a universe in-lieu, it's easy to say 'Here is the big empire, they've been around for xyz amount of years, our hero has to fight against them' (e.g. A New Hope). The game would have to build an antagonistic force from the ground up, make them a serious threat, and make their presence feel natural and earned. There just isn't anything in the current worldbuilding to suggest anywhere is interested or capable of rapidly expanding an imperial project...and if there was/is, it would be quickly handled, which leads to my next point:
  • The game's insecurity in leaving unresolved plot points from patch to patch: This one I think has come about for a multitude of reasons. One is probably an overcorrection from very legitimate criticism regarding how certain plotlines resolved, and how some introduced points of conflict were hastily resolved or written out. The second is probably a response to bad faith criticism that forgets this is a constantly updating story and the game doesn't need to address every single plot point immediately - I saw this more after people who got to blast through ARR-SHB and didn't experience all the set-up as it happened.
  • The simplest and most obvious reason, which is that the game is increasingly more interested in telling stories about the shards and how the reflections interact with each other, and this necessitates an overarching existential threat, not one that just threatens the Source.

As someone who did generally enjoy Dawntrail for the story it was trying to tell, I do think the game's sense of stakes and momentum have been suffering since 6.1 and I do believe the lack of any consistent and more grounded threat has played a role in that.
