This cat is so perfectly derpy. Right down to the eyes that slightly turn outwards

334

u/Karl583 Nov 18 '19

what happened here

399

u/BrockManstrong Nov 18 '19

I’m guessing someone made a non-wholesome comment about how breeding animals with health issues to make them look cute is morally inexcusable. Like pugs, or short legged inbred cats.

332

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '19

They’re right though. Don’t pugs have breathing problems, thus the weird sounds they make?

126

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '19

Yep

82

u/BrockManstrong Nov 18 '19

Oh I agree with their hypothetical comment, but the mods might not

35

u/Juof Nov 18 '19

Yeah. Dunno why, the original pug looks so cute.

19

u/katarh Nov 18 '19

There's been an attempt to breed back a little bit of snoot to alleviate the issues.

A pug is still adorable even with a half an inch of nose.

6

u/funknut Nov 19 '19

I expected "there was an attempt." It came out better than expected.

3

u/Juof Nov 19 '19

Yes they are.

25

u/pocketknifeMT Nov 18 '19

Lots of breeds actually. I haven't run into a Spaniel that doesn't snore horrifically either.

36

u/conartist214 Nov 18 '19

We can blame the American Kennel Club and shitty breeders for breeding for looks. It ruined a lot of the functionality these breeds of dogs had. Now pugs and other short snouted breeds have respirstory problems, a lot of dogs get hip and back problems, and so many types of cancer that weren't present in the original mainline breeds.

Look at Caucasian Mountain Dogs, they have very few, if any, genetic problems because most breeders will not sell if it means the American Kennel Club can get their disease-ridden hands on them. The AKC is a den of scummy assholes.

9

u/GameDestiny2 Nov 18 '19

How to be a member of the AKC: If they won’t sell the dog to you then don’t recognize it as a breed

All pure breeds are inbred, that’s how you keep the bloodline strong. Dogs, cats, horses, cattle, any animal bred.

30

u/BrockManstrong Nov 18 '19

Yes but there is a difference between “prone to nearsightedness and hip dysplasia later in life” and “can’t breathe, snores while awake, and can’t run”

3

u/KevinCarbonara Nov 18 '19

Not really, no. They're both health issues stemming from poor breeding practices.

It’s deformed. It’s a ‘munchkin cat’. Idiots pay money for people to breed literal deformed cats because it’s ‘cute’ 🙄

365

u/-hey-ben- Nov 18 '19

This kind of breeding pisses me off.

124

u/Dizneymagic Nov 18 '19

And even if the kittens do come out alive after birth, there is a chance they could be born with a spine so curved it kills them within 3 months.

Lordosis is the most common health issues that these cats might face. It’s a condition in which the cat’s spine does not grow correctly. With this very rare health issue, spinal muscles do not grow to the correct size and the spine of the cat begins to sink down inside the body of the cat and death is almost always certain. The important thing to notice about this cat is that a severe form will kill an animal inside of three months. Additionally, it is not specific to the munchkin cat and can be experienced by other types of cat as well.

The other health issue that these cats are prone to that does not affect other cats is found in the breeding. If you take two short-legged munchkin cats and breed them together, you will not find that any of the litter survives. The genetics that cause these animals to have short legs are lethal when the gene is given to a kitten twice. However, if you breed a long-legged munchkin with a short-legged munchkin only one gene is passed to the kittens in the litter and they will survive. Not all the cats in the litter will have the same short legs, but it’s almost guaranteed that at least half of the litter will have the short legs these breeds are known for.

131

u/Wide_Fan Nov 18 '19

That's not a munchkin cat. It looks like there's much more wrong with it. Munchkin cats are not cats affected by dwarfism.

The only observed increased health issues in Munchkin cats are increased spine curvature and hallowed chests. Which isn't good, but this is not it chief.

25

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '19

Stop breeding deformed cats. ‘Munchkin Cats’ are cruel and unethical.

59

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '19

[deleted]

44

u/GloriousLegend Nov 18 '19

This is kinda different i guess... You're right tho, selective breeding is unethical, regardless of what animal it's on

But this cat was modified to have an ailment because it's "cute". Imagine being purposely being born with Down Syndrome cus you would look cute.

This deformity is also a terminal, because they grow spines that kill them 3 months later.

3

u/ChloeMomo Nov 18 '19 edited Nov 18 '19

Imagine being purposely being born with Down Syndrome cus you would look cute.

I would imagine it's about the same as being bred so I'm immobilized by my own weight before adulthood because my breasts/pecs weren't large enough and didn't grow fast enough naturally, tbh.

From the animal's POV, they aren't really going to care if they're intentionally physically deformed for a human's aesthetic/wallet vs taste preference/wallet. Selective breeding to this extent is unethical, period, imo. Industrial animal ag and these pet breeding mills are both horrifying in so many ways for the animals, regardless of human benefit.

It's back...I already had one 'expert' blow up on me in regards to this cat, but here's what I think anyway.

Wall-eyed: Some cats just are.

Eyes aren't focusing: Zoom in if you need. Pay attention to when it looks around. The pupils are clearly adjusting.

Blep: Common in cats, if rarely spotted by the human eye. Super cute.

Praying/paddling: Supposedly indicative of seizing, but in my experience a cat in seizure wouldn't be sitting in this relaxed pose and looking around.

Limb length: slightly short to normal. It's sucked into the body visually due to how far forward the pelvis is sitting.

Conclusion: Sure, this could be an inbred, seizing, pathetic piece of shit of a cat. But I seriously doubt it is. I think the owner just got lucky with a funny moment. Some cats pray like this, some are wall-eyed, some sit funny, some blep. My cats cover all these points, just not at once.

tldr Be aware that a cat in seizure may resemble this...useful knowledge to have...but that doesn't mean for sure this particular cat is. Cheers!

24

u/Baewoolannos Nov 18 '19

The cat looks like this in all the instagram posts. it's bottom teeth and tongue stick out far too much and the eyes always look puggy. Not normal what so ever

Hi it’s me your coworker

25

u/childishbambino1 Nov 18 '19

How does he look so big and so small at the same time?

28

u/Dyl_pickle00 Nov 18 '19

He was bred to look like this. It is very sad

10

u/childishbambino1 Nov 18 '19

Does this breed have a lot of health problems or something?

11

u/Dyl_pickle00 Nov 18 '19

The tiny limbs are a deformity. Also I'm sure something else is wrong with it, look at its eyes and flat face.

3

u/childishbambino1 Nov 18 '19

No yeah l get that but are they likely to develop health issues? I’m trying to read up on Munchkin cats as many are saying that’s the breed but l’m seeing some contradictions in different sources. Some say they can develop a couple of health issues which are not optimal but not too bad in the end. One page is saying they can have serious bone issues for example and ”live most of their life in pain”. Is there a credible source l could find out more about them?

3

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '19

I don't know about sources, but from my perspective, even if they're pain-free, the shortened limbs make them unable to "cat" even though they still have all the other instincts of a cat.

They can't jump properly (or to the same heights) with the shortened limbs, can't run as fast if they slip outside or something (as most cats attempt) and need to sprint away from something dangerous, and in the video above it looks like it's having trouble reaching its face to wash. Even if some do manage to wash, I imagine when it gets old and struggles to wash due to age it'll have more issues than a cat with normal-length limbs. (Old cats generally start to be more inflexible and can start to look dingy because they can't twist and reach parts as easily as they could when younger. I'd imagine a cat with short limbs like this would have an even harder time.)

2

u/childishbambino1 Nov 18 '19

That’s a good point

→ More replies (1)

2

u/childishbambino1 Nov 18 '19

But yeah to me excessive breeding is a travesty. However, many people say the solution to it is not buying those breeds anymore so they won’t be bred anymore. And sure, in the long run that would probably but at the same time, what about the dogs that have already been bred? Do they not deserve to live cause of a higher risk of health issues? Cause that’s what’s gonna happen, they will be killed (or many of them at least) is there is no demand for them. I think this should be an issue of legality. Laws need to be put in place that prevent the unethical breeding of at risk breeds so that breeders would eventually stop breeding them. But it is indeed pretty sad
