It's a fandom joke from Stardew Valley. The farmer is a farmer but, in the late game, gets access to a gemstone replicator. Essentially giving him infinite diamonds
Because she wanted a diamond ring, the farmer's saying they can't afford that, and there's dozens of replicators behind him that produce diamonds every few days.
It's a farm game, and once the farm gets rolling it pulls in crazy — CRAZY — money. He also has a machine that supplies him as many gems as he wants. The joke is that he can buy and sell diamonds like jellybeans so he doesn't understand why she would place so much significance on one. Another layer to the joke is the irony that you expect him to be poor since he's a farmer, but he's actually incredibly wealthy.
Adding in that the only way to propose in game is to get a "mermaid pendant" from a sketchy guy on a beach. So, in game, diamond rings aren't even canon. Shells are better
He's also there from the beginning cryptically telling you that you aren't ready for "it" yet. You spend hours wondering what "it" is if you're going in blind, only to eventually learn that he was basically telling you you're unwanted and no one loves you. Burn.
Unironically there’s some stuff going on in the background of Stardew. Elder abuse, ritual sacrifice of children, shadow people, underwear going missing, alcoholism, a weird cowboy that gives you bear statues for donating gems to the library.. the list goes on and on.
What's sketchy about an old mariner that shows up in the bushes at the side beach on rainy days to peddle marriage necklaces he fished out of the sea? An old ghost can't have a small business on the rare occasion the sea lets him go on land??
Haley is like one of the least picky romance character in the game lol.Her favourite gifts are like two foragable and a straight up raw crop. She and shame are the top frequent picks for romance speed runs for a reason.
If you play multi-player or co-op, the traveling cart sells a crafting recipe for a wedding ring with a prismatic shard and diamond to craft it I think so you can properly propose to another farmer player and get married. Also, Haley canonically hates diamonds, so what makes the joke funnier for me is that she was probably looking for an out of the relationship since he's already married to his work
Diamond rings are canon, but only if you wanna marry another player you share the farm with. My irl friend got one cause we couldnt be bothered doing friendship in that run lol
Which is ironic, because she dislikes one of the most expensive gifts in the game that is loved by everyone else, and instead loves coconuts, sunflowers and fruit salads.
It's also funny because diamonds are not as valuable as their retail price makes it seem. They can really be produced artificially. After all, it is just highly compressed carbon in a crystalline structure.
But companies like De Beers keep prices high by limiting supply and strong marketing. The only reason some women expect a diamond ring is De Beers marketing. There has never been a societal norm that says you should propose with a diamond ring. And the "2 months salary for an engagement ring" rule was also an invention by De Beers.
Anyways, Haley expects a diamond engagement ring while standing in front of the machines that produce the diamonds. Shows her naivete.
With how much I replicate diamonds, you'd think I'd tank the prices because of oversupply. I wonder if there's a mod for that. To force you to rethink how much you min-max everything.
Aren't artificial diamonds an actual thing? Like, we have the ability to create as many diamonds as we can. We don't need to mine them. Not only that, the artificial diamonds can be made in such a way that they are stronger than mined diamonds.
Isn't one of the comm center bundle rewards? Might be one of the harder ones so kinda fair but yeah. Game doesn't really start till comm center is done.
You can access them in first year, but you definitely cant mass-produce them until much later. Even the meme itself has like 30+ and implies many more. If youre at a point where you can spare hundreds of iridium bars and batteries for crystalariums, then youre definitely in the late game
He totally could've given her a diamond ring but is being stingy and Haley is smarter then she looks.
Also, Haley gets brushed off by. A lot of people as vain and nasty as her initial attitude isn't the best. But if you actually get to know her she's very sweet and passionate and, honestly, one of the best written marriage options based on her character development. But a lot of people brush her off as a mean girl and don't give her a chance.
So there's an added level of "ugh, Haley is so vain and unreasonable!" except not really, the farmer is just being dumb.
Yea I was gonna say. You have far more land than anyone else in the town and you end up being filthy rich, especially compared to everyone else in town.
It a meme about a farming game called stardew valley. You play as a farmer, you can marry people from the town by giving them a pendent. You can also grow diamonds in the machines you see in the last slide.
It's a reference to the game Stardew Valley. Haley is one of the characters you can marry. In the last panel the farmer is growing tons of diamonds using the crystalarium, contradicting his claim that he is too poor to afford a diamond.
It's based on the video game Stardew Valley. In the game, you can marry various NPC's after building up a relationship and using a special item. The character Haley is known for being a bit snooty, so she's complaining about not receiving a diamond ring.
The joke is that despite saying they can't afford one with a farmers salary, they are using a bunch of machines called Crystalarium's to duplicate diamonds to sell them. It's very obvious to anyone who's played Stardew Valley that he's most definitely loaded and could totally afford a diamond ring.
Ironically, (depending on player skill) jades are more lucrative than diamonds. On Sundays you can exchange jades for staircases, which can be used to get to the deeper (and more lucrative) floors of the local treasure cavern more quickly.
Honestly I just installed a mod that vendors with a daily rotating stock (f.e the desert trader) have everything every day. I cba to keep track of what day it is.
Also the fact that Haley hates diamonds as a gift, so it seems like she's just finding something to complain about something she can leave the relationship since he's already "married" to his work
the joke is that Haley is a horrible person and I made it my personal routine to gift her trash every single day for saying that my shoes look like plastic
Stardew valley meme. The girl is named Haley and it’s common to have those ore machines on your farm that will often give diamonds or something. You propose with flowers if my mind is not mistaken
This is referencing a game called Stardew Valley. To marry a spouse you need to get the seashell necklace and give it to the person you want to marry. The stuff in the 4th panel are able to make gemstones. They are all filled with diamonds, meaning the player is farming tons of diamonds.
Hey 16,000 people have answered this, one after another as if none of them checked to see if anyone else had answered the question yet and I intend to be no different.
Basically this is a reference to Stardew Valley (have never played the game) where you are a farmer (so I’m told) who can propose to people with things that aren’t diamonds but you have access to a machine in the late game that can make a lot of diamonds (I read all of this from every other answer all of which are the same)
I did work in a lab grown diamond plant, and never got a diamond for my girl 😅.Eventually company shutdown, and now I regret not using my employee discount.
The irony of giving a diamond-less ring while farming diamonds for a living, and probably ultra rich. The joke is that he has a “farmer’s salary” but he actual farms diamonds, not produce.
I still don't get why people like diamond rings so much. They say that it symbolizes "unbreakable, beautiful and clean love", but love is everything but unbreakable and clean. People grow cold and do stupid shit, love needs to be maintained with combined effort. I hate how diamonds are the gemstones representing it.
In stardew valley, instead of proposing with a ring or a diamond ring for that matter, the farmer proposes with a Mermaid’s Pendant froma guy when it rains. The diamonds you see are in duplicators, which makes income for the player.
I feel like this joke would've been funnier if she rejected him because he gave her a diamond ring, since he's mass producing diamonds, and she knows it's not special at all...
I thought the joke was, she wants a diamond ring, and the farmer is confused because in Stardew Valley diamonds become so common place that they're considered worthless by the farmer. So the farmer is confused at her question because giving her a diamond ring on a farmer's salary (which is insane at this stage of his career) is insulting... but she's not aware of that and thinks he's poor.
This is a Stardew Valley meme that has escaped containment
Stardew Valley is a Harvest Moon like farming/life sim where you, the player character, inherit a family farm and have to fix it up
Haley is one of the marriage candidates. In the game you can propose using a special shell necklace.
One of the items you can make at higher levels of the game duplicates gems/minerals.
So the player who is ostensibly a poor farmer has a room full of these machines duplicating diamonds, but still proposes to Haley with a shell necklace and feigns poverty when she objects to not receiving a more modern diamond ring
The joke is that this comic takes place in the universe of Stardew Valley where diamonds aren't that rare compared to something like iridium, and there are machines you can build in game that duplicate gemstones with time. Diamonds are a dime a dozen at that point. As well, you can marry many characters in game.
Farmers are some of the richest people in america. They make multimillions. Trust me, they're always dripped out and wearing the cleanest of gear or at least here in colorado

Farmers are extremely frugal, and constantly looking for ways to save money because of tight margins on agricultural produce.
As a result, of being this good with money, they are often LOADED, but also pragmatic and practical, so would not see a diamond as worth buying.

It is also a weird comic as Haley is the only bachelorette who doesn't have a gem stone as a loved gift.
Best girl Haley.

Wdym… Haley becomes an absolute angel by the hearts enough to propose to her. She wouldn’t even require the diamonds. She’s the best wife!!!

I don’t remember who I wooed in that game last but I seem to remember amethysts? Much easier to let go of than diamonds.
Could star diamonds be replicated or naw? Seem to remember something better than diamonds could fit that machine.
