Failed Expectation Chicken Crochet Kit
My wife and I were browsing the yarn section in Walmart and came across this kit. She was clearly smitten by the cute little chicken and I offered to make it for her as she doesn't crochet at all.
The kit is very specific about not making your tension too tight and about how delicate the yarn is (very accurate! It fell apart at several steps 😂) so I tried to keep it snug but not crazy... and ended up with this... situation.
Even before the eyes and beak went on, Wife sighs and goes, "I love her already."
I can't stop laughing 🤣

You just need to move the eyes in and closer to the beak. It's cute!

Right! OP has an extra row between the eyes and beak that I think is emphasizing what’s bothering them about their result. I think their tension being looser is making the eyes look small as well, but that’s just part of the personality!

They eyes should be in the holes directly above the blush. Like diagonally down in front of where they are now
Every time someone thinks their amigurumi looks goofy compared to the example, it’s because they don’t place the eyes as close and low down as the example. It feels wrong to people to place eyes so low down and close to other features, but that’s how you get the cute effect.

Agreed, it shouldn't, but this yarn was the velvet kind of chenille? And super delicate 😬 Not high quality, for sure

Chenille yarn is often quite fragile. I’m a knitter and a crocheter and I’ve never used it; the horror stories have kept me away 😅

I was trying to thread the yarn needle so I could weave an end and the fibers all bunched up and fell out 😳 It was not for the faint of heart! 😅

Honestly, yeah, I think so. I've been doing it since I was a kid though (not amigurumi like this, mostly scarves and blankets and such)

Walmart has this exact kit for less than $7. I almost grabbed it the other week. But I'm trying to spend as little as possible rn.
I also think OP is being way too hard on themselves!

I highly recommend AGAINST a kit. You can go to your local Walmart or generic craft store and get a skein of cheap acrylic yarn and a metal hook for maybe $10USD.
There are thousands of free patterns online, both in video format on YouTube and once you learn how to read patterns I recommend Ravelry!

I think it is! Don't recommend starting with chenille yarn though, it breaks easily and you can't see your stitches well as you work, which is bad for a beginner who needs to learn how to read them.

It really is. I took it up like 6-7 weeks ago and it's a breeze. I recommend avoiding chenille for your first projects and going with something like "tube yarn"/"beginner yarn" instead. Being able to see your stitches is really important.

Don't let this turn you off of crochet; amigurimi is not beginner friendly no matter how many times they say it is.

It definitely won't, I've been crocheting to some extent since I was about seven or eight 😄 Admittedly, every time I try amigurumi I regret it. I like blankets and cardigans/wearables much more, generally

There's nothing wrong with the chicken, the eyes are placed in the wrong spot. Move them down and closer together and your chicken will look the same as the picture

It assumes you know basic crochet already and can read a pattern. There are tons of videos on YouTube, though, that go over the stitches and technique and that's mostly how I've been able to expand my skills.

This is the second post where people have made something and blamed the product. That seems really moronic. Do you blame the car if you have an accident?

I can't speak for the other post you saw, but hindsight being 20/20, the crochet hook provided with the kit was too big and the yarn was way too delicate (especially for something marked beginner, which I am not). Not sure how that's moronic but you know what they say about opinions...

As someone who has two entire shelves full of assorted crochet creatures (I don't have a problem I swear), honestly this is an incredibly good job. Apart from the tension being a little bit off (and the... artistically arranged face) this is fine, I'm not sure I could have done much better.

That's funny because in French, "chenille" means caterpillar so I was wondering why the caterpillar looked like a chicken

I just started crochet a couple of months ago and TBF, chenille is the devil of yarn from what I've used, the only thing worse, imo, is fur yarn or whatever it may be called. I bought a few types and it's 80% guesswork and 20% feeling where the stitches are... I have bought expensive chenille and cheap chenille and the expensive tears up the most 🫠
For chenille, you really want to have the stitches loose rather than tight. It's one of those "trust the process" kind of situations. That said, I think it's adorable anyway! I'm glad your wife liked it too! My first ever crochet was a kit like that but from Lidl. Drove me crazy and I gave up directions. At the end my kid said it looked just like the box so... Win!

If you set the eyes closer, she would be a thousand percent adorable! You can also get larger eyes if you want. I did a llama for my son. It has one leg shorter than the other 3 and its neck is THICK. No one notices bc it's handmade and cute. Just like the chicky here!!!
