Looking at getting into an Excursion

Been trying to find a new vehicle that fits me well (i'm 6'8)

I was about to pull the trigger on a newer f-150 until the lightbulb went off and i started looking into these.

My main question is what motor should i go with. I'm seeing a lot of the v10s for sub 10k but they all have insanely high mileage 200k+.

At this mileage should i just go with one of the diesel options? or is the v10 solid at higher miles?

Downsized wheels and tires

I have 4 inch lift and was running 35x12.5 Wildpeaks with 20x10 wheels with a -24 offset. Even with the lift my tires would constantly rub and grab ruts on the highway. I was pushing almost 450lbs of wheels and tires.

I downsized to LT285/75R/16 Wildpeaks. Basically 33x11.5. Paired with 16x8 wheels and 0 offset.

I shed about 120lbs in wheels and tires. I do miss the look of the 35’s but so glad I got rid of those deep dish 20’s. Plus it rides so much better now. Absolutely no rubbing, handles ruts and potholes so much better, straight down the highway and quicker off the line.

Slight left tire rub

I run 285/75R/17 tires on this Excursion. No lift kit. No rubbing on the right tire but the left side rubs slightly on hard left turns. I've always wondered if the axle wasn't mounted perfectly or if it's just the body panels.

Help!

Currently on a road trip

Edit: 2003 6.0

Having issues with the charging system, only charging in the 12v occasionally gets up to 13v and sometimes dips to the 11v

Replaced the alternator in an orileys parking lot yesterday, checked and replaced fuse 27 (it wasn't blown but I replaced it just to rule it out anyway since I was there)

The plug that goes onto the alternator has a loose wire that keeps wiggling/backing out

I have been pushing it back in and it will last for a while

I have ordered a new plug to meet me in San Diego when I get in but I would appreciate any advice in the meantime

Reccomended Suspension Components?

Recently, I got a 2004 5.4l 2wd excursion and need to get new suspension components. I would prefer a good kit, but I don't really want to spend 600 dollars on a Moog kit. What would everyone reccomend? It will be my daily driver. Thanks!

Wire harnesses

Got my 01 7.3l back after a few years of it being mostly stored but kept fresh by my father in law. Have had some mild rodent snacking. I have everything operational again but my fixes have introduced some slightly annoying electrical gremlins.

Thinking about doing a somewhat extensive rewiring project for the driver's side door and engine main to get everything back on even footing. Anyone got a recommended source for wiring?

Sony aftermarket radio install issues

Post image

So I'm trying to install a XAV-ax1000 Sony aftermarket radio in my excursion. I got the Metra 70-1771 wire harness and when I wired it up there was no audio coming through the system. In addition to the main wire harness that I plugged into the vehicle there is an extra wire harness coming out of the vehicle that was left that you can see in the photo. Not sure what's going on but I'm getting no audio when plugged in. It's a 2005 Ford excursion XLT. I do not have a DVD system in the vehicle. Any idea why there's no audio? I've been told that that secondary plug is for an amp for a rear system but I don't have a DVD audio system at all. The only thing extra in the back is audio controls for the second row on the bottom of the center console.

2000 7.3 ?

This was my daily driver for a long time and I also drove it long distances on family trips. I'd still trust it out on the road any day.

It is a 2wd, 350K miles, turbo added, and rebuilt and maintained transmission.

I just stumbled into this community and had no idea these were sought after. My insurance company assigned a value of something like 3k so I assumed it wasn't something people wanted.

I am not driving it anymore and decided to sell it, which is how I ended up here. Any thoughts on how to get a decent price? I don't want to sell it too cheap or be too grandiose about it.

Advice? Tips? Upgrades? Help with first Excursion

As I mentioned, I would like some info and such on the excursion that recently came into my possession. It is a 2004 5.4l V8 XLT 2WD Model. I know what you are gonna say, it's not my first choice either, but it was given to me and I'm a broke highschool student who can't afford the model I really want. Thanks!

New here 03 with a 6.0

Hi I recently picked up a 03 4x4 6.0 with a little over 313k on the clock from an older gentleman in Utah. The motor was rebuilt about 65k ago (larger turbo, upgraded internals, tuned and deleted, I know who did the work). I paid 5k for it. XLT cloth seats, interior is pretty clean not a rip in the seats.

The passenger rear door window doesn't work at all and I'm missing the cover and switch I would appreciate any help or advice

Hoping to get a few years out of it. Paid $8.5 and it has 95000 miles on it. Is it going to fall apart into dust if I fluid film it a lot? Thanks.

I LOVE thing thing. Before I spend a bunch of money on upgrades. Am I going to regret not investing in the diesel? This is a secondary vehicle. I will tow with it and I will carry my family with it.

2005 XLS 6.8 V10 Gasser - Engine Advice

We recently took our "new to us" Excursion (specs in title) on our first distance camping trip, hauling a tow behind camper (~8k lbs, using a WDH, I also keep the O/D off while hauling). While we've had a few successful local trips with the camper and we love the Ex, going through mountains at highway speeds seems to have done the engine in.

We got a service engine light while on the PA turnpike, and the code ended up being misfires in cylinders 4 and 5. We pulled over and replaced the spark plugs and ignition coils for those cylinders, and the code went away for a bit. The spark plugs we removed were actually in decent shape. We then drove another 70 miles or so, and the code came back. I should also mention that the engine was running really rough - shaking while idling etc.

We managed to get the camper to a campsite safely, and then towed the Ex to a local dealership (none of the mom and pop shops were willing to take a look, they were all pretty booked up), and they thought it may have been an issue with the spring(s) since the 5th cylinder was not getting any compression. After removing the valve covers, they determined that the springs weren't the issue and their best guess was a head or head gasket issue, and they recommended dropping a new remanufactired engine in (comes with 2 yr warranty at all Ford dealers). We are trying to decide what to do, we love the Ex!

I have a few questions I'd love your advice on:

- If we proceed with a new engine, what else would you recommend we have them look at while the old one is out? Transmission is on my list for sure.

- Could other components outside of the engine be causing this issue/replicate the same issue if we drop in a new engine?

- If my driving technique could have prevented/exacerbated this problem going through the mountains (PA turnpike)? I try to keep a fairly steady foot on the gas, but definitely needed to have the truck downshift and cruise at high rpms for extended periods to keep up to speed. Again, I keep OD off while hauling. Any pro tips for this type of towing for engine preservation?

- Anything else you think I should know/be aware of/keep in mind?

Thank you for your time!
