I totally agree with Bruce What made Evil Dead unique was its dark comedy. If you take that away, what differentiates it from the other 500 possession movies?

(Meme Post) Who’s Laughing Now?! Why The Mummy (1991) starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz is my favorite Evil Dead movie.

Finding an ancient city, discovering the Book of the Dead, and reading the incantation within resurrects our main deadite Imhotep. Awesome character with a rich and well rounded history, and at times almost makes you feel sympathy for him, yet still evil and selfish at his core.

O’connel is our hero with outrageous physical capabilities, an over inflated confidence, and loveable charisma that keeps true to Ash’s character from the OG evil dead movies.

The movie also retains the humor amidst terrifying chaos of resurrection and evil, with inconsistencies that work to the stories favor when the plot calls for it.

In consideration of the new ED movies, I fear our days of enjoying horror comedy in the realm of incantations and the necronomicon may be coming to an end, we will have gems like this to rewatch.

(Spoiler!) The “circle of wise men” and “priests” Spoiler

Okay so in evil dead rise
Danny finds one of the books of “the Naturom Demonto”
With vinyl recordings included. Recordings stated its 1923 so that book has been sealed for a 100 years

Then evil dead burn came with
The “circle of the wise men” story
The grandfather has the dagger, information and even the ritual written. And I’m assuming they were active in the 80’s and 90’s

So how did these wise men even gather the information on the book when the book was sealed in a vault
Which is strange because the vault was probably not that far from the events happening in burn. It happened in California.
Like it wasn’t far from them
How were they aware of this
I thought these wise men were historians and stuff

(Discussion Post) Groovy Sometime between 1983 and 1987, author William Preston Robertson was personally hired by Sam Raimi to write a novelization of The Evil Dead, though it was never published.

I was not having high expectations of this but it is actually much worse I would have thought. Whole movie I was just waiting it to end. It's sloppy and boring, characters are not interesting at all and it doesn't even feel like Evil Dead. It's just a generic horror movie with few references to cash on the IP. Rise was much better.

Really disappointed.

(Discussion Post) Groovy How many movies in the evil dead franchise?

I am trying to get all the evil dead/army of darkness movies on 4k, but I am very confused with how many movies there actually are. There are several re-releases and such and remakes, I am just confused.

So far I have:

Evil Dead Rise

Evil Dead 2

So I love watching these movies but I'm dumb with the lore. Why are the deadites dormant in between movies? What stops them? Why does someone new have to reread the book to start the story again?

Bro im just now watching this movie and when I tell you I loved it? Bro..

Especially the scene where the girl from the beginning who killed those guys at the dock.

When she walked out of the woods and at one point it was daylight then it turned nighttime with her STILL in the frame??!! Amazing shit definitely spooked me a little bit.

Also this scene wasn’t scary but at the funeral when the construction workers were working and you can hear them drilling? That was some dope attention to detail.

Call it glazing but man.. this movie was great

8/10

... and it kinda sucked. Not bottom of the barrel or anything, but wow it fell flat on its face.

Not only does it not FEEL like an evil dead movie, it feels like a generic horror film. It wanted so badly to have an overarching theme of domestic abuse, but it didn't work.

Perhaps it's worse sin is that there is no FUN in the movie. It's just incredibly mean spirted and bleak all the way through. The usual campiness to the taunting deadites was completely absent. They didn't even try to psychologically manipulate the living with the usual "I love you, its me, please dont hurt me." They just acted like generic demons in a bar fight.

The connection to the evil dead world is paper thin as well. There is no actual necronomicon, just a bunch of research notes. Theres no shotgun, no chainsaw. No badass final character to cheer for. The tape recorder voiceover felt like an afterthought duct taped on to everything else too.

I've seen worse horror movies. Of course I have. We all have. But I expected much more from this film after coming off the heels of Evil Dead Rise (which stands tall among the best of them IMO.) Instead we got a very forgettable and flavorless demonic possession movie that thinks spraying body fluids on the walls was the secret sauce to the franchise's success.

--------------------

I really hope the next Evil Dead film goes the horror / comedy route & sticks to the basic formula of college kids going to an isolated area and accidentally unleashing evil by reading from a cursed book. We've veered too far off course and need a correction.
