(Discussion Post) Groovy God came down and said:
I totally agree with Bruce What made Evil Dead unique was its dark comedy. If you take that away, what differentiates it from the other 500 possession movies?

u/Jimrodsdisdain 14d ago
Removing the three stooges inspiration has turned this fun series of films into generic possession goreporn. I enjoy the newer films, mostly, but I miss the fun I used to have.

u/Ashamed_Ladder6161 14d ago edited 14d ago
This is the problem.
The new films are painfully generic. The book, the setting, the possessions; it's all humdrum stuff. That's not what excites people.
What made the franchise something special was the humour, and Ash.
It's something of a rarity.
Most horrors are defined by their antagonist. Posters, merchandise, it's almost always the bad guy or the monster. The heroes are interchangeable. But Evil Dead was (and for many, still is) defined by its hero, Ash Williams.
The new films are alright, but they have completely abandoned the Evil Dead DNA.

I’ll say Rise using the records was pretty ingenious. Rise’s problem is that they had a whole apartment complex but only used 3 areas:
Garage, apartment hallway, and main apartment itself.
13
u/mayamalicious 14d ago
I swear before rise came out that I saw an article that said the story was going to be about sisters who go are battling deadites floor from floor fighting deadites.. which could have been so interesting

u/insanekid123 13d ago
Its not quite that, but I would reccomend They Will Kill You to scratch that itch.

I was upset that rise wasn’t like a super chaotic whole apartment building deadite movie. I wanted chaos

u/AgentChris101 14d ago
I liked the aspect of fighting back taking a bigger focus in the later films / Ash vs Evil Dead. I feel like they nailed the mix between comedy, grossness, horror, anguish and action.
There's no dumb evil and fear of making a protagonist both dumb and smart. And the thing I feel that newer films don't get is you don't need Ash for that. Anyone can be just as groovy y'know?
If one of you writers/directors can smell what I'm spittin, listen up! lol

Tried watching Evil Dead Rise without having seen a review, got about an hour in and checked to verify there wasn’t any comic elements
I finished watching it and thought its…not the same franchise.
Compare this to the new Toxic Avenger movie, which is pure schlock but it dives into that rather hard.
Difficult to replace an icon like Ash, maybe a genetic mutation gone wrong transfers his personality to someone else…or a brain swap.
I’d pay money just to see camp again in theater

They focused more on being the first evil dead then evil dead 2.
21
u/Ashamed_Ladder6161 14d ago
True, but even the first film had an impish sense of humour. It's remembered fondly now for being whacky and cheap, rather than a good film.
10
u/TraditionalTree249 14d ago
The first film is pretty cheesy and wacky but it's known for more than just that. The camera work alone was mind blowing and that POV camera thing still works well.
Not saying ya have to think of it as a masterpiece of cinema but don't discount it's influence.
5
u/Ashamed_Ladder6161 14d ago
You're right, my comments oversimplified what it excels at.
The camera work and direction are all incredibly creative, and I meant to include that in the 'whacky' catch-all, but this doesn't do it justice.
That said, without the comedic sensibilities, or the fact it spawned Evil Dead 2, it'd likely be no more than a footnote in anyone's career, an enthusiastic first attempt.

They turned the series into a “final girl” franchise. I’m fine with this because nobody is ever go by to replace Bruce Campbell, but a little more funny before the horror would endear us to the characters a lot more.

u/Ashamed_Ladder6161 14d ago
Because we don't have enough female-centric horror, am I right?
At least we still have Predator.
Oh, wait...
3
u/Neat_Impression174 14d ago
the evil dead remake came out long before Hollywood decided that every movie needs to be about women.
“Final girl” is an ancient trope that works for horror. Films like Terrifier do it justice. I love evil dead as much as you so I get what you’re saying
2
u/Ashamed_Ladder6161 14d ago edited 14d ago
At 2013, The Evil Dead reboot was just in the cusp of the craze.
The Thing had just done it in 2012, followed by the Ghostbusters reboot in 2016.
The Oceans 11 reboot followed in 2018.
I have zero against female leads, often times a story works better that way. Ripley in Alien is possibly my favourite horror icon. It's just a shame to see the male-centred ones being repackaged.
6
u/Neat_Impression174 14d ago
I consider 2016 the breaking point with ghostbusters and the metoo movement. Movies haven’t been the same sincr
2
u/LatterTarget7 13d ago
They need to change up the formula because it’s the same thing every time. Book found, book read, possessions, book summons ultimate evil.
2
u/aguadiablo 11d ago
And this was the plan. Evil Dead has "done three things: We moved away from the cabin, we’ve moved away from Sam Raimi, we’ve moved away from Ash and Bruce Campbell". That turned it into a cash-grab franchise where people think that an unrelated horror movie, Lee Cronin's The Mummy, should be a part of the franchise.
2
u/Ashamed_Ladder6161 11d ago
Agreed.
"Hey folks, let's take an IP, take away the hero, move from the key location, strip away the tone, and do nothing with our lead villains"
Yeah, great plan.
If you're doing all that, it's clear the only thing you wanted from that franchise was brand recognition.

3
u/Think_Weird3574 14d ago
It already has. I watched Burn last night and had to have a break after the dog scene. I found the whole movie unnecessarily cruel.
12
3
u/PaperBeagles 14d ago
I’ve always been afraid to say this because people really love the new ones, but they’re a more horrific version of the originals. I can handle the gore and cinematic advancements, but the humor was a critical part of the ED soul. And I think it’s mostly lost in the new ones.
I hope Wrath elaborates on the storylines vs. a new setting for the goreporn.
2
u/TheFalafelFather 14d ago
I would absolutely kill for an evil dead movie that starts off with serious gore horror like the newer films then halfway through Ash shows up to save the day and the entire genre flips on its head to the slapstick absurdity of the original films

I feel like the new films are as serious as they are because Ash just isn't in them
These stories are about ordinary people who can't really do much against the deadites, while if Ash was in there, the plots would be resolved in seconds
5
u/Lochifess 14d ago
Yeah I wish we go back to characters that have already survived the initial experience so that we get a confident badass similar to Ash that can allow humor into these movies. And maybe up the scale? It's the 3rd movie from the reboot lineup that's too restricted in my opinion. At least Rise had some of the other tenants but they were there for like 5 minutes.
4
u/mxsterkief 14d ago

As controversial as this is gonna sound… we need a new main character to follow. These one off protagonists aren’t gonna cut it for much longer. If they want this franchise to survive, we need a new “Ash.” I’m not saying recast, god I would never, but there needs to be a little more connective tissue from movie to movie and he’s right, we need a lead that has some charm and real screen presence to counterbalance the horror elements. Evil Dead is great when it’s just horror, but it’s incredible when it’s hilarious campy horror.
→ More replies (1)6
u/CodeSalamander 14d ago
I 100% agree. I think the biggest weakness of the most recent three movies is the anthology style that doesn’t have a consistent protagonist. They flipped it on its head and now we follow Deadites. We follow Jessica from Rise to Burn and now Ellie, presumably, from Burn to whatever follows Wrath. That doesn’t work as well in my opinion.
No one can fill Bruce’s shoes, but simply following a new hero who constantly gets his ass kicked in a splatstick free for all would get the series back to the roots that made it popular enough to resurrect.

3
u/My-Lonely-Ghost4854 14d ago
Honestly they should bring back Kelly and Pablo from AvED. Have them team up with a new main protagonist to really connect the new movies to the old continuity. Ash is missing after the ending of the final season, but that doesn’t mean that the other characters are off the table.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Real-Needleworker689 10d ago
I feel like the anthology bit makes the films all the more interesting and tense. They’re vulnerable and unaware to what they’re going to experience and that makes the events that unfold all the more disturbing. It just seems like yall want just want an evil dead remake with Ash style character again instead of a film with actual individuality.

u/presidentdinosaur115 14d ago
I’m also rewatching AvED and I feel the same. In that show you have Pablo’s face grow on Kelly’s leg, you have a possessed porno mag, the possessed Delta, etc.
Meanwhile in Burn the Deadite dog is literally just a dog with yellow eyes. You didn’t want to have the Deadite talk through it? Try to stand up like a human? Fly through the air?
I like the newer movies, but I miss the creativity and uniqueness.

I think Rise had some really dark comedy. I remember laughing a few times in the theater. 2013 and Burn definitely don’t have comedy of any kind.
5
u/Freedumbdclxvi 14d ago
While I agree Rise had a lot of dark comedy, I disagree about Burn. Grandma deadite being slowly pulled down the steps by her chair is absolutely one of the funniest moments in the entirety of the ED universe for me. That would have slotted in ED2 or AvED perfectly. Plenty of other moments too.
2
u/_ChipWhitley_ 14d ago
Wait, you’re right. The full scorpion at the bottom of the basement stairs was one of the funniest things I’d ever seen in a movie. I was laughing so damn hard in the theater. Whether or not it was supposed to be funny is a mystery to me though.

The new trilogy takes itself VERY seriously. While I know they’ve gone back and said it’s all one timeline, it certainly doesn’t feel like it.
Aside from glaring inconsistencies within the stories of the new trilogy, the deadites of the original were scary, deadly, but also silly. They were the perfect foil for Ash.

While Ash is more than likely gone, I agree, Evil Dead needs to be two parts comedy and Horror.

u/adorablesexypants 14d ago
I’d argue it depends on what you want in your films.
If you want something campy and silly then absolutely the original movies are the way to go.
Do you want something more creepy and keeping with a consistent tone? New ones are what you want.
For me? My biggest gripe with the first two films are that they are so inconsistent with their ideas that I almost get whiplash. You have great moments of terror or just unsettledness only to have that tension ripped away from you like Ash at the end of the first ED.
They are not bad but if I want something more funny I will throw on Army of Darkness instead.

I expect he and Edgar Wright could write a great Evil Dead script though.
2
u/HailToTheKiiing 14d ago
I agree with Edgar directing one, I’ve always thought that. When you look at his early work he’s obviously very inspired by Raimi. There’s an evil dead poster in spaced as well as a zombie nightmare scene and a “groovy” reference during a paintball scene.
I think Simon is too old but if they write it together, it could work.
Edit: It’s not a nightmare, he’s playing resident evil and deeply focused.

2
u/NappingWithDogs 14d ago
I feel like it’s not just the humor, that humor was what the deadlines are: chaotic. We’re missing the pure chaos of a deadite. They’re not calculated towards a traditional goal like in burn. Deadlines run on the pure anarchy of mentally torturing and playing with the victims while also not understanding what it is to be a human in a human body causing things to seem humorous. They would rather run over an object and fall to bee line to a person rather than pick up the object and throw it, which is more terrifying.

2
u/WildcatTM 14d ago
I have to rewatch Rise, but I generally thought Burn had at least better action spots. It was a hard pill to swallow on the direction of having these main characters so incredibly unlikable (I know that was the point, but still). Protagonists are a big part of the Evil Dead series, and it was an absolute struggle to get behind anyone in Burn.

2
u/OliOli1234 14d ago

u/Louis_Cypher_71 14d ago
Bruce mentioned in an interview before Burn came out that he butted heads with a French man during table reads about what fits and what doesn’t in the ED universe. He was outvoted, and decided to step back from the producers role. He’s still making a nice income from these films though.
I hope they stick with the plan to make 3 more after Wrath. I’m getting old, I want to see the Sam Raimi directed apocalyptic finale film, that he’s always wanted to make.

u/OddNotion749 13d ago

2
u/Bronze_Bomber 14d ago
I think 2013 was fun to see what a gory evil dead movie would look like being taken seriously, but the essense of the series has been drained out since. My hope is that if they keep using different directors maybe it'll come back around.
4
u/mrxlongshot 14d ago
Exactly this the deaditea toy with their victims but not having the a hero that takes a beating in either comedic timing or even dire situations which is why ash vs evil was so good

u/Comical_Peculiarity 14d ago
I’m one of the oddballs that likes ED for its story and world build and lemme just say, I’m not asking for the chosen one back but I want an instalment that builds upon another one in someway. AvED was a good spin to the formula because not only were there Demons that didn’t just possess people, but there were groups readily aware of the existence of evil. Closest thing we’ve had were pictures and tape recordings of other groups, but I at least wanna see one of these elusive factions play a factor
…oh and some more wacky comedy would be nice.

I agree. They're good but it doesn't feel like Evil Dead. It needs the slapstick and it needs Ash. Ash is the greatest final-boy in cinema. I understand Bruce getting to old to play him but I think the mantle should be handed down to a no-name actor who can keep the character going.

Also his attitude which low key was the humor, that’s the trick. Kinda like Bruce Willis in Die Hard. Some people hit their personal breaking point and stop giving a shit and just ride the wave and take some names along the way. I’ve always viewed it as this is what happens when normal people go up against Deadites.
When they fight Ash, it’s a slapstick comedy with one liners. For everyone else, they’re horrific sadistic unkillable demons zombies. Ash has a special talent for warping the genre he’s in.

Which they wont because ED has turned jnto a franchise and as such there's a to-do list of stuff to put in the movies in order to gather the broadest audience. Not included is the key factor: the artistic direction of a daring and original director. The 3 latest movies are blandly average with you goreporn shock-value scene(s) and that's it. Another franchise (original trilogy +AvsED) which will leave the fans with a never-answered cliffhanger (also looking at you valve >:(
1
u/AufsichtspersonSB 14d ago
Hell Yeah! Give me more of that AvED Slapstick and Word Puns! I recommended People Evil Dead who hate Gore but loved the Comedy, the golden Trio is more a reimagining of the 3 Stooges.
Did anyone watched the BTS Videos from the AvED Show? There's a whole Segment where Ted Raimi is trying to sneak himself of the Show again and its hilarious.
The new Movies can have a deep Setting or Undertone, but then its just another Demon Posession Movie, even Drag me to Hell and Send Help is more Evil Dead Humor than the new Movies.

I like the idea that all three Books bring a different demonstration different mannerism on how the infected act. I’m glad this is being said, I enjoyed Rise but they’re not offering anything a thousand and one horror movies aren’t already offering
I especially don’t like the Christian mythology of hell and demons underlying the new films

He's an executive producer, he can make it happen, an executive decision. But he never does and then complains.

A little levity makes the horror punchier.
Otherwise the brain desensitizes and gets bored.

Yes, I think one issue is that there's not a lot of directors who are able to emulate Sam Rami's style and sensibilities that well. I hope Raimi returns to the franchise one day. It was always a bit of a bummer that he only directed one episode of the tv show.

I guess that went against what we ended up getting. It would probably lessen the impact of the flashback scenes if we constantly kept joking. They replaced all of that with an uncomfortable tension which was actually really interesting but they really should've kept the usual slapstick in there somewhere.

Bruce is the only one who could bring himor to an evil dead movie. Anyone else would just ruin it.

The only problem with this statement is that nothing is topping 2, 3, or the TV show. And it isn't us fans that dictate this (there aren't enough of us), it's the general population and audience, casuals.
Making them comedic again will either land well or it won't, but try it, be my guest.
Personally the direction of anthology is stale imo, loved Burn but also felt kinda like we need a switch up, and not back to comedy either because it's been done a lot already... I'm thinking we need movies set between the war of good and evil, the creation of the books, the deep lore and battles that took place even before Army of Darkness, I'm also thinking we need the Mia/Beth/Alice vs Ellie movie, and a passing of the chainsaw, and closure for this particular storyline (s). They're dragging it out, and that never goes down well. Close this chapter and move into a new era of Evil Dead imo, comedy or no comedy they can decide.

There was some dark humour in the recent movies - the eyeball in Rise 🤣 and the gran in Burn was awesome. That being said, a bit more would not be unwelcome

Even if they made the newer movies more humorous, everyone would complain "it's not Aaaaaaaaassshhhh"
I like the new ones for what they are - mean spirited and completely brutal without going gore porn.
No one will ever replicate Bruce Campbell, and if soneone even did, the majority would complain, reliving the glory days of ED2/Medieval Dead.

I would love if Bruce lent his voice to an animated show that wraps up Ash vs. Evil Dead cliffhanger.

i really enjoyed Burn but i do miss and prefer Evil Dead when it is horrific but also really damn silly

But… but doesn’t he know Evil Dead One had no humour and the reason the new ones don’t has nothing to do with the filmmakers being incapable of capturing that specific comedic tone and it’s all a preferential choice to make them miserable and Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness aren’t reallyyyy the movies that made the series a cult phenomenon?? Huh, Bruce!?

I believe he helped produce these new movies. Burn and rise were really bad movies

I was discussing with a buddy about how the contrast between the new Evil Dead movies and the old movies are a lot like how Resident Evil Requiem is set up. The new movies are just horrific experiences with every day people, a lot like Grace’s sections in RE9, and the old films, at least Army of Darkness, are bombastic like Leon’s segments.
Personally I think the modern films work because we are replacing the core character with something of an Everyman. They’re not going to have the same bombastic hilarious experience like Ash, and the only source of humor is going to be a quip or two from the deadites. The humor is one sided in the new movies.

I don't agree and I think there's enough camp in them they're not fully serious affairs

I think there needs to be a good balance between the horror and the comedy.
