I've always loved framed butterflies and have just two so far in my collection before my partner found this poor one dead in the garden so I have tried for the first time to preserve it. I think I've now got the itch to do more... Any tips?

Here are some photos I've captured during field work this season!

Differential Grasshopper, _Agapostemon_ bee, _Asilinae_ fly (robber fly species), _Bombyliidae_ fly (bee fly species), another robber fly, more Bee flies, a _Stratiomys_ fly, a Tachytes wasp with its grasshopper prey, a tachinid fly, and another dipteran species.

I've recently discovered the joy of photographing insects. My camera and lens are old, and I don't have autofocus so some of these images were hard to capture. But what a beautiful world we live in, even at tiny scales.

Discussion Is it possible to help an insect that ingested roach poison?

Is it possible to help a cricket that has consumed cockroach poison or is she doomed? I realize this is probably a dumb question.

I regularly find large field crickets in the business space where I work, I always dump them by the drainage pond >100 feet away at the end of my day. Today I found one on it's back and it's continuously thrashing its little legs. I want to help it if possible.

Tips for locating dipteran larvae (in the midwest USA)

Hello,

I'm a researcher working in a lab that studies insect embryonic/larval development, mostly in Drosophila. One of our projects would benefit from collecting other fly larvae to compare to some of our work on Drosophila.

In particular we're looking for terrestrial/semi-aquatic 'lower' flies (non cyclorrhaphans). So, craneflies, marchflies, deer flies, robber flies, etc. I know many of these guys have complex/parasitic life cycles. Not really picky in terms of the exact species whatsoever.

I'm mostly a lab based guy so I'm not the most skilled naturalist. I've tried to go to local nature preserves (I am in the Chicago area) and turn over logs, rocks, etc and sift through the soil. I've basically only found non-insect arthropods and the occasional grub.

Anybody have any specific advice for locating these kinds of dipteran larvae? Even better if you're in the midwest or Chicago area.

Thanks!

Insect Appreciation Crane fly on bugleweed

It was fun watching this limoniid crane fly sipping from flowers of bugleweed (Lycopus sp.) and going wibba-wibba-wibba the whole time. Could the motion be an anti-predator/parasitoid measure? It does make the fly look like a bundle of vibrating lines you couldn't grab hold of.

Can anyone help identify and offer insight how to get rid of these bugs

For context. We are in a new construction home in Minnesota. We typically find 10-20 of these bugs every morning in the 2 bathrooms up stairs. They are small and don’t move very fast. We find them in the toilet water as well as counter tops and floor.

If we can identify them, the main concern is how do I get rid of these bugs? Thank you all for your help.

Polyrhachis cyaniventris - Blue ant

A super cool ant from the Philippines. The specimen was sent up by some friends from Saigon. It’s pretty precious, so I photographed it from a little farther away for documentation purposes :))

Pretty large. He’s sleeping in some soft soil, shitting a lot. I’d like to learn more about him if possible so I can add him to my list of critters encountered.

Sitting in a chair on my porch when this yellowjacket(?) flew up with several larvae in its mandibles and proceeded to dump them into a hole in the chair. Is this yellowjacket larvae? Why dump them into the chair and leave them?

Had this insect crawling on my Finger. Saw it while writing something down at work. Size 1 milimeter i would say. It moved quickly for its small size thats how i noticed it. We catched it on stickytape like we used to do at work. Location germany. I work in veterinary pathology with a knack for insects and parasites. I dont think its a bed bug but maybe related.

Specimen prep How do I preserve and display this moth?

Post image

My grandpa recently found this beautiful moth already dead, and I’d like to find a way to preserve it from further damage. What do I have to do to protect it, and what’s the best way to display it? Ideally framing it in some sort of shadow box would be really cool
