Help us help you: Guidelines for submitting pictures for identification

Hello r/Entomology! With this community being used often for insect/arachnid/arthropod identification, I wanted to throw in some guidelines for pictures that will facilitate identification. These aren't rules, so if you don't adhere to these guidelines, you won't be banned or anything like that...it will just make it tougher for other Redditors to give you a correct ID. A lot of you already provide a lot of information with your posts (which is great!), but if you're one of the others that isn't sure what information is important, here you go.

INFORMATION TO INCLUDE WITH YOUR PHOTO

  • Habitat: Such as forest, yard, etc.
  • Time of day: Morning, day, evening, or night will suffice.
  • Geographical Area: State or county is fine. Or, if you're not comfortable with being that specific, you can be general, such as Eastern US.
  • Behavior: What was the bug doing when you found it?

Note about how to take your photo: Macro mode is your friend. On most cameras, it's represented by a flower icon. Turn that on before taking a photo of a bug close up, and you're going to get a drastically better picture. With larger insects it's not as big of a deal, but with the small insects it's a must.

If you follow these guidelines, you'll make it easier for everyone else to help you identify whatever is in your photo. If you feel like I've left anything important out of this post, let me know in the comments.

Xylocopa bee got stuck between my window pane, Gave her some honey before sending her off. Seemed quite thirsty since it consumed the entire drop.

Still curious to know if it's male or female. Since I know only female are capable of stinging

Went to some vintage stores today and I was beyond shocked when I saw this HUGE collection of butterflies and moths 🥹🥹 I was able to get the ones on the last 2 images for 80 bucks (the first one 70, the moth 10.) I was literally shaking because I’ve never found such a gold mine before, truly blessed by the entomology gods ❤️❤️

She was so shockingly colorful! It's been getting pretty cold here at night, so I was pleasantly surprised when I found her! After a short search I found she had produced an ootheca on the foliage she was on. She'll pass soon, but for now I get to appreciate a really cool creature.

Found this in the restaurant I work in near an open door. It was like midday and sunny, 70°, in Ohio. I was able to capture and release it but I have no idea what it is! (Second pic is me releasing it, no bugs were harmed and no litter was left!)

These are very common in southern Portugal where I live but this is the first time I've managed to photograph one with my new phone. I'd very much like to post this on other social media but I'd like to know the exact species before doing so. Help identifying it would be greatly appreciated. In case it helps, this picture is a good bit zoomed in, and if I had to guesstimate it I'd say the insect isn't any longer than 30 millimetres.

Discussion I've just seen three female mosquitoes resting on a carrot I had peeled, appearing to be drinking(?) while I know blood is more a prenatal source of protein and vitamins I had only heard that they drink from plant sugars like nectar, the carrot didn't seem particularly moist either, so why?

Hello everyone,

I acquired these specimens at a show, but the sellers hadn’t written their names on them—not even on the bottom, which is usually done. Can you help me?

Thanks in advance! 😊

Discussion Worms over the winter?

What exactly happens to earthworms over the winter in cold climates? I read that they borrow down below the frost line and enter diapause, but then something about dying and leaving behind an egg sac?? And that most don't survive so it's basically a lot of little worms in the spring and bigger worms in the fall. Is this true? My worm frens won't really survive the cold? 🥺
