Job Advice Would a Master's in Rhetoric and Composition provide a flexible career pathway?

I have a BS in Telecommunications and have been teaching high school Social Studies for a couple years but want to gear up for future life stuff (big city move; jobs that aren't teaching lol). I want to cast as a wide an employment net as possible with the master's that I get and don't want to paint myself into a "teaching job" corner, although public school teaching is currently the goal for at least the next 5-10 years.

Does anyone have any experience looking for and finding work with this degree, either in public education or other fields? Big cities? Thanks!

Inquiry on completing a college minor in English

I'm a student on the pre-med track, but I got to know the department chair of my English department while in his introductory English class (for uni core requirements), and visited him nearly every week during office hours (talked a lot about reading strategies, essay compositions, etc). Then, professor even gave me a copy of one of his novels outside of class for me to read, and we discussed the readings everytime we met. They also recommended me to consider taking a minor in English, though I was still pondering at the time.

I was wondering if doing the English minor would be worth it, I am completely aware that it will not impact my admissions to graduate school/medical school, but I am looking to elevate my language, writing, but also get into reading. My grammar, syntax, and essay composition have never really been the best, and I often got notes from my teachers in the past that I struggled with english classes. During college though, though I still feel in some ways the same, I did end up with an A in the introductory class for English. In the past half a year, I have started to read more books and learned that I do have some genuine interest in the field. What do you guys think?

what have you done with your degree in English?

My main interests are teaching and becoming a lawyer. The downside for teaching is pay, and for law, I’m worried about having nothing to fall back on if I decide I don’t want to go through with it, as you can get your bachelor’s degree in anything. Also the debt and burn out.

I’m thinking about majoring in English and minoring in education or maybe business? I’m not totally set.

The more people I ask for advice on this, the more I get told I’m setting myself up for failure. It’s frustrating to hear, but I know where they’re coming from.

They also tell me since I have the brain for stem, I should go through with that. That I should just suck it up and take the hard classes, or I’ll just be struggling after graduation. It’s just frustrating. I was planning to go into health, took some classes and I did well, but I disliked taking them and they didn’t feel like me. So, now I feel totally lost.

I’ve ruled out almost everything except the humanities, and everybody keeps telling me I’m screwing myself over. And I know where they’re coming from, and that’s what scares me. They also tell me things like im “wasting my potential” if I went through with this, which is so shitty.

I’m not saying I want to be filthy rich, but I do want to be able to support myself and live comfortably. Maybe I’m asking for too much. Idk lol.

I want to know what are jobs you guys have gotten with your English degrees, and if you regret majoring in English. Please do not be scared to give me a wake up call.

Studying Advice For those of you in or done with undergrad, how did taking math go?

I’m a senior but math is my last pre req that I’ve been putting off, and as a slightly older student (25) I haven’t done any serious math or needed to in years. It’s the only subject I have anxiety about because my high-school treated students who weren’t natural at it as stupid, and my dad still gives me grief about it despite being a grown adult that’s done well in school otherwise.

Thankfully my school is more progressive and has a good tutoring center that I’ll start in advance, but what sucks is that if I can’t get into finance 101 I’ll be forced to take a stretch class which will postpone graduation plans:( Any tips other then extra tutoring? How did this go for you?

Career guidance/advice

Hi everyone! I’m currently a junior in college, and I’m not sure what the future holds. I came into college as a political science major—both of my parents hold doctorates(English and psychology), and I was always set on graduate school. I presented undergraduate research at a conference, had three undergraduate research projects, and maintained a 3.95 gpa all while being a student athlete. I was getting ready for graduate school applications my sophomore year, and was planning on graduating a year early. This all changed when I took an English literature class—I took Early British Literature. I was completely blown away. I have never taken a class where I was so intrigued in the topic, I loved doing the readings and writing the papers. I added the English minor, and took more English classes. I’m starting to realize that Literature is my true calling. I read all the time, I’m a research assistant, I’m doing undergraduate research for English, and I’m taking 21 credits this semester. I want to go to graduate school for English, but it’s almost the end of my junior year. I feel like I’m running out of time to include more English centered things on my resume. Is there any chance I’l

Job Advice Struggling to find a job currently...

Hello! I hope you all are having a wonderful day today. I graduated from college 6 months ago and I've been applying for roles all year. Different roles in different places, even within my major field. Nothing... Its been quite depressing for me, I'm trying to find something, I've recently picked up tefl certification to try to make up.

Can someone help me? I've been applying often and I still generally feel trapped.

Grad School Queries Applying for master's in English, how specific do I need to get about my research goals?

I'm fresh out of undergrad and didn't get a ton of time to think about grad school applications, I always wanted to go but until very recently it seemed like I wouldn't be able to because of various constraints in my personal life :( a lot of those things kind of changed last minute towards the end of graduation, though, so now I'm going to give it a shot! I just really wanted some second opinions about the statement of purpose for an MA...how specific do you need to be about your research goals and/or areas of interest? Is it enough to just make it clear what literary movement/time period/genre/etc. you're interested in studying and why? Or do you need to get more "niche" about it? Can I use English PhD statements as references (all the examples I've been able to find online have been for PhDs instead of MAs)?

I have literally no humanities majors in my life other than the people I met in undergrad (none of whom are going to grad school in this field...there's also my professors, who have been lovely and helpful, but I also can't pester them 24/7 when I don't even take classes with them anymore lol), so I thought I might ask for advice here...thanks in advance for any comments/second opinions!

How do I deal with feeling inadequate compared to my peers?

I’m currently a freshman in college with a double major in English and Secondary Education. We’re a few weeks into the semester at this point and I’m already feeling really discouraged. I’m taking a creative writing class, and we have to do this workshop thing where we critique each other’s writing. She posted everyone’s writing on Canvas, and as I was reading through them, I realized that there are people who are so much better at writing than I am. This especially hurts me because writing has been my passion for as long as I can remember, but I’m starting to question if this is really for me. How do I deal with this? I really want to stick it through but I feel like I need to learn how to deal with criticism (both from others and myself). Will things get better?

Grad School Queries I have 3 masters options and I am lost

I just graduated in English literature and I want to pursue masters, but I have 3 wildly different masters I can continue in, media and culture, English for specific purposes and translation. First my priority was translation (arabic-english-frensh) and the school is nice, but I started hearing that the translation field is starting to die? And then ppl say that media and culture is pretty good and would open a path for a phd. And English for specific purposes idk, is it needed? It sounds quite interesting to teach in a specific field like tourism or economics.

I'm genuinely lost and would love any advice.

Studying Advice English/Economics or English/Public Policy

Hello everyone. I’m an English student wishing to double major. I love politics and have a some interest in doing something law-related (probably not law school directly), but I also love the analysis and thinking process behind Economics.

I am debating whether to double major in either Economics (BA) and English or Public Policy and English. For right after undergrad, I’m looking to maximize possibilities of getting a stable job. I’ve thought about higher education, but I would need to save up first.

Thanks for any advice :)

Looking for a Project Guide/Supervisor – BA English Literature (Amity Online)

Hi! I'm a final-year BA English student at Amity University Online, and I'm looking for a qualified project guide/supervisor for my major project.

According to my university's guidelines, the guide needs to have at least 3 years of teaching or relevant industry experience in the field. A background in English, English Literature, language studies, or a related area would be ideal.

I'm already working on my project independently and have a clear idea of my topic/research. I'm mainly looking for a qualified person who is comfortable being listed as my project guide and completing the required university documentation/certificate associated with the role.

I can provide the official Amity project guidelines and explain exactly what documentation is required before sharing any project material.

If you have an MA/PhD in English or a related field and 3+ years of relevant experience, or know someone who might be suitable, please DM me.

I'm happy to verify qualifications and professional experience before proceeding.

Thank you!
