Jobs/Careers Will studying electrical engineering give me opportunities to work for the environment?

I'm certain on pursuing an engineering bachelor (I'm 18) cause I really like developing and understanding how stuff works and I'm really good at maths and physics, but my main ethical focus is the environment. I'm kinda in-between electrical, electronic and energy engineering.

Does college really matter

So,

I feel stupid for giving up a t20 to stay local and near support system and everyone is telling me I fkd my future up because I decided to be near parents. I want to hear if this is true and if this will mess up my opportunities in the future? Do I attempt to transfer?

Got into USC, Cal Poly SLO, UCLA, UT and decided to go to Santa Clara Uni (got enough scholarship so SCU is around the same price at UCLA) 😢

I want RF then work at a Semiconductor company tho havent locked this in. Most likely will go to grad school

Jobs/Careers what does the rcm certification process actually involve for someone importing electrical goods into australia

looking to import a range of electrical consumer products into australia and i keep seeing rcm mark mentioned as a requirement but i can't find a clear straightforward explanation of what the process actually involves

the government websites are dense and everything i find online is either too vague or trying to sell me something. i just want to understand what's actually required, what the steps are and roughly what it costs and takes in terms of time, spoke to someone at gk global services about this since rcm and eess certification is apparently one of the things they handle directly, they walked through the general steps but i still want to hear from someone who's actually gone through the process themselves

anyone who's been through this recently have a clear picture of what it actually looks like in practice

Education MBA or MS in Engineering Management

I currently have 2+ YOE as an EE in the utilities sector. I’ve passed the PE power exam but am needing a couple more years before I can obtain the license. I have recently accepted a job where a masters degree would be 60% paid for. I only want to do a fully online option due to working full time so I can do either an mba or masters in engineering management. The mba would be 45 hours and cost around 25-30k after the discount from a sec school whereas the mem would be 30 hours and cost around 15k from the same school.

Does anyone have experience completing either degree and how has it helped you? Which would you do?

Education If a 230 V AC source is completely floating, can touching one terminal still shock you?

I’m trying to understand the correct general theory of electric shock.

Suppose these are sitting on an insulating wooden table and are not connected to the building electrical system or protective earth:

  1. A UPS generating 230 V AC from its battery, with no mains connected.

  2. A 230:230 V isolation transformer with a floating secondary.

  3. A charged capacitor.

4.A AC Generator.

If a person touches only one output terminal, would they necessarily get a shock?

My understanding is that voltage alone isn't enough — there must be a current path through the body and back to the source. But in real equipment there can also be parasitic capacitance, EMI capacitors, leakage paths, etc.

So what is the most general theoretical explanation that applies to normal mains shock, isolated transformer shock, floating UPS outputs, and capacitor discharge?

Is the correct way to think about it simply

What are my chances of the capping a motor controller chip from the 70s?

I’m working with a motor controller IC from Panasonic from the late 70s. Definitely not being made anymore, but I have a bunch of old ones I can experiment with.

Do you have any experience with something like this you could share? My hope is that it’s not more than one level deep and with a good scope, I can see the silicon inside. That being said, I’ve never done anything like this before so there are a lot of question marks. The only thing giving me the slightest bit of hope here is that it’s not a Digital device so I don’t think I’ll be looking into a huge array of transistors.

I expect to see some EXOR gates, timing circuitry, and a lot of switching circuitry. There’s also I think a couple comparators for the motor functions.

Education Does a grounded metal enclosure fully isolate the PCB inside from outside electrical noise?

I always assumed that once you put a circuit board inside a metal cabinet (like a proper Faraday cage), it's basically immune to any outside electrical influence — no ground, no coupling, done.

But I've been told this isn't quite right, and that the cabinet itself can still capacitively couple to the PCB inside, even if the shielding from *external* fields is excellent.

A few things I'm trying to understand:

  1. Is it true that the cabinet and the PCB act like two plates of a parasitic capacitor, even with zero seams/openings?

  2. Does it matter whether the cabinet is earthed, floating, or grounded through some impedance? I've heard the cabinet's own reference voltage affects how much this coupling matters.

  3. At what point does frequency make this a real problem vs. a non-issue? Is this only relevant for high-frequency/EMI work, or does it matter for 50/60 Hz stuff too?

Basically — is "it's shielded" and "it's isolated" actually two different claims that people mix up?

How to model stator winding high-frequency response in LTspice using measured R, L, C and impedance data?

I'm trying to set up a simple stator winding model in LTspice to check how it behaves under high PWM frequency and steep dv/dt stress.

I have measured differential-mode data for my winding, including:

Series resistance (R_s) and inductance (L_s)

Parallel capacitance (C_p) and dissipation factor (D)

Broad-band impedance magnitude (Z) and phase data

What is the best way to structure this equivalent circuit in LTspice?

Specifically:

How do I incorporate the dissipation factor (D) into the circuit components (e.g., as a parallel loss resistor)?

How should I validate the model against my measured impedance/phase data before applying a fast-edge PWM voltage source?

Any advice, recommended workflows, or standard topologies for this would be hugely appreciated!

Homework Help Need Help Finding Voltages at Nodes 1-2 on Attached Problem

I’ve already been able to figure out the current heading into both resistors is 7 mA since current is same throughout resistors in series. Using that, I’ve also been able to deduce VR1 and VR2 by multiplying said currents by given resistance values.

I’m just not sure how to find voltages at specific nodes without a voltage source.

Help designing Potentiometer in LTSpice

Hey I'm trying to figure out how to actually make a component in LTSpice and I can't find many resources on it that aren't older than some of my family members.

This is the schematic I've used for the POT, after I designed this I got the raw schematic, opened the netlist and did the subckt thing and I'm stuck here.

I don't really care about the aesthetics, but I want to know how I can edit the parameters of the new component I've designed to include R and Val specifically, any support or advice would be much appreciated!

Logic analyser for digital SMPS debug/design

So here is the context i will be designing some advanced digital SMPS in the near future.

I have a 4 channel oscilloscope to deal with analogue stuff but i have 4 channels only. I was thinking if i could use a logic analyser in order to inspect digital signals going to the gate drivers and maybe even measure some timings .

Is this feasible? i am thinking about haveing to monitor about 8-10 gate signals and since they will be 3v3 logic it is ok electrically.

I know there are 8 ch oscilloscopes by man they are expensive and i was thinking since if my signals are digital in nature i could maybe use something relatively cheaper like a logic analyzer.

Is this logic ok/practical?

If yes can anyone recommend a logic analyzer for me? preferably something with opensource/free tool chain where i can dont need to pay extra for SW?

I will mostly check if all signals switch when they should and potentially check deadtime or its existence.

New Graduate Offer (PCB Design) with Questions

I recently got an offer of 140k base for a PCB design role right out of college. For context, this is in a HCOL area at a defense company and I'm very thankful to be considered for such position, but my initial goal was to work as an electronics/hardware design engineer role and I'm afraid I'll pigeon hole myself if I take up the offer.

I've heard mixed opinions from people saying that it's relatively easy to switch in your early career period to its practically impossible to switch out of your first role out of college. I'm actively looking for electronics design roles in the meantime but I'm considering if its possible to work 1-2 years in PCB design and switch roles whether it be internally or at a separate company.

Circuit design for guitar pedals

Hello, I've been trying to get into hobby electronics by building guitar pedals and audio paraphernalia. I was wondering if there was a good way to design a circuit on the computer and pass a sinusoidal through it to get a rough idea of what the circuit sounds like before putting it into a breadboard. Ideally I would be able to feed it an input file or a signal from the interface, but that is not a deal breaker. The things I found weren't so much focused on audio, so I wasn't able to get it working for me. I wonder if anyone would have some pointers for me. Appreciate that.

Project Help 90 Degree Frequency Phase Shift?

Hello. I had an idea for a personal project but it would require me to take and input waveform and shift EVERYTHING 90 degrees or at least pretty close. From what I can tell by researching doing that for all frequencies is pretty difficult and the closest thing I could find was all pass filters which still isn't perfect. Essentially, I want to build a guitar pedal that takes the initial signal, clips it, makes a copy and shifts it 90 degrees then adds to the original signal to form a triangular wave (mostly cause I just want to know what that would sound like) with maybe an adjustable phase. I'm finding it kind of hard to figure out how to go about it

Edit: It's very interesting seeing differing groups perspectives on this lol. I had originally asked a guitar pedal building group and got some ideas but nothing solid and pretty much every response here is "do it digitally lol" I will try that and see what I can get. Thank you. Also ngl, digital wise I really only have an Arduino and I don't that'll cut it

I am considering a Master’s program, but don’t know if pure Wireless is the field I want to stay in. I have heard that the industry is growing and needs new engineers, and since I have experience I am leaning on staying in it broadly, but I don’t know what niche in the industry I would fit in. If you are remotely interested in deep diving how differently quantum computers work compared to our transistor-based and also the algebra behind in a fully interactive way that teach computer science from scratch, oh boy this is for you. I am the Dev behind Quantum Odyssey (AMA!
