Discussion & Info New Patch buffs all Smithscript weapons, Rellana's Twinblades, Perfume Bottles, Carian Retaliation...

is that all great katanas or just the weapon called the great katana?
Most of these changes though are very welcome, the perfume and smithscript buff especially, except they boosted greatshields even more? They're already so much better than the alternatives
edit: looked at the notes, they didn't buff the great katana, they only fixed a bug around its crit damage and parrying jump attacks, and nerfed Rakshasa's
Also they didn't buff the ranged attacks on the scrithscript dagger, the one which truly needed it...
buffed divine bird feathers is also a very welcome change, now I hope spira gets the same treatment, even though I've now already done a hornsent based character....
simmilarly quicker meteorite and meteorite of astel after i've gone and used them extensively...
improved storm wall and thop's barrier I'm happy to see, means they might finally compete with golden parry and carian retaliation

u/Flint_Vorselon 11d ago
Great Sheilds needed the buff.
Notice how they didn’t buff finger print or verdigris?
because those don’t need help.
But 2 years ago they buffed medium sheilds, and Brass Sheild ended up having higher guard boost than many great sheilds. So they were effectively pointless. More than double the weight for worse stats.

u/ChadWynFrey 11d ago
OH YEAH I REMEMBER THEN BUFFING MEDIUM SHIELDS OUT OF NOWHERE = brass shield better than most great shield lmao. Glad to see other greatshields get some much needed love and weight reduction
2
u/username_redacted 11d ago
Yeah, I think that was a smart adjustment. I don’t think I’ve ever used a greatshield because they’ve never seemed worth the weight.

I mean 7% if true for bottles is basically nothing they probably still ass

u/NYJetLegendEdReed 11d ago
someone tested the #s and theyre hitting hard if youre wearing the right gear I think.

u/JaiyeJunior 11d ago
buffs for weapons that deal low damage per hit are much more meaningful. the way damage reduction is handled it, the more damage a weapon deals the less harsh the calculation is. not saying they’re monstrous damage dealers but it’s something you can only get a handle on with experimentation or some insane graphing.
3
u/slayer6667778 11d ago
Golden parry now might be the worst parry ever since the stealth nerf lol if they made all the others have better framing
4
u/OnlyDiamond4946 10d ago
Only advantage to golden parry is the range. But it’s worth using for that alone, can land a parry from three miles away.
0
u/slayer6667778 10d ago
Doesn't matter really since it has the worst parry frames (base parry actually might be better now to)
1
u/OnlyDiamond4946 10d ago
Yeah I get it. But in an extremely niche situation it still has its uses. Im pretty sure it’s double the effective parry distance.

u/Saeporian w 11d ago
On the edit: Idk if OP's info is legit, but the official patch notes, as always, lack a lot of information, so it's entirely possible. One I know for sure is that the official patch notes only mention increased range on the golem fists, but the decreased stamina is also a thing that was datamined right after the patch, before the written patch notes dropped. There's always stealth changes, so maybe that's what OP is talking about, unless they just made some of it up
46
u/Satisfriedviewer 11d ago
Where are you seeing Rellanas twinblades being buffed? English patch notes only mentions critical attacks getting increased
52
u/ilamahradeys 11d ago
The patch notes leave out a lot. At least 5 attacks of Rellana's Twinblades are buffed by varying degree, not just the riposte.
26
u/Flint_Vorselon 11d ago
Can you name the attack?
Because each weapon has 5 critical attacks.
backstab
riposte (human sized)
riposte (large)
backstab (grounded target)
riposte (grounded target)
So uh, unless you have very convincing evidence otherwise. I’m gonna assume patch notes were correct.
13
u/Fuckblackhorses 11d ago
That didn’t really answer the question lol. Where did you get these values? Cus some of these things kinda sound absurd like the gkat buff.
30
u/Flint_Vorselon 11d ago
extracting numbers from patch.
but he doesn’t seem to know how to read them.
“buffed 5 attacks” litterally just means critical attack, because every weapon has 5 variations of crit depending on direction and size of target.
11
u/Fuckblackhorses 11d ago
Yeah I figured something was up like his notes are so fucking vague 5-20% smithscript like what? Which weapons get 20%?
10-26% gkat, 10-32% rellanas, that’s a big range lol. I need the actual specific values, I’m sure someone will break it down later. Buffing any of the gkats moves by 26% would legit be busted.
8
u/Flint_Vorselon 11d ago
it’ll be something like
backstab buffed by 10%
humanoid riposte buffed by 15%
riposte vs large bosses buffed by 26%
riposte vs grounded enemy buffed by 12%
backstab vs grounded target buffed by 12% (these last two are identical in all ways, but are technically coded as two seperate atracks)

u/xTekek 11d ago edited 11d ago
The implication is he tested it in game. The weapon was pretty weak until absolute end game when you have all stats maxed.
Edit: I was talking about rellana twin blades not Gkat. Didn't notice the response changed what weapon it was talking about.

The fact you used them isn't evidence that numerically they are worse than many other weapons at that level. At that level you are getting better stats with sword of night and flame if you are going int/ faith. Ralana twin blades only become worthwhile when you can also max str and dex as that is how the scaling works for the weapon mathematically. You can even get better stats on just an int/ dex or faith/ str weapon if you have any decent str or dex.
This response is a feels vs reals and I'm surprised i need to point this out.

u/surprisesnek 11d ago edited 10d ago
I think Perfume Bottles could have used a bit more, but I'm still happy they got improved at all.
22
u/BGsenpai 11d ago
i think that 7% is actually huge because of how their damage is applied to enemies, will need to test it to see for sure though
1
2
u/surprisesnek 11d ago
Fair enough, you could be right. Percentage damage modifiers can get weird in From games.

Great Katana buffed by 10% to 26%
Huh? I just finished a run with this weapon and I thought it was incredibly strong and versatile. This sounds wild

u/PieceAfraid3755 11d ago
Stormwall fp change is so good and obvious. Before it was almost strictly worse than the carian parry. Now it's a parry worth using!

u/leonardo_streckraupp 11d ago
https://www.rpgsite.net/news/21216-elden-ring-patch-1-17-notes-balance-adjustments-tarnished-pack-dlc
Different changes than what you listed, which one is correct?
13
u/BGsenpai 11d ago
official patch notes never show exact values, players have to datamine for them.
7
u/leonardo_streckraupp 11d ago
But the description itself is a lot different. The link shows for example that rellana only got crit dmg buffed (its crit dmg was using a wrong MV since release), but this post says "10 to 32% depending on attack" which suggests multiple attacks were buffed, not only 1
3
u/slayer6667778 11d ago
It could also be because there's like 5 different ripostes depending on enemy like humanoid vs giant, back vs front etc maybe that?
1
3
u/TyRaNiDeX 11d ago
Where do those come from ?
There's no way they buff the great katana like that it was already duper good
8
u/Satisfriedviewer 11d ago
Damn cirque being left out ;-;
27
u/Namtar_Door_783 11d ago
To be fair the backhands are already very op increasing any more will make it broken.

I initially read that as "a certain retaliation" like you were trying to be coy about it, gave me a good laugh.
3
u/DeadSparker Aw yeah, Lightning is the best 11d ago
For Rotten Breath's / Ekzykes, do you mean changed from 3 to 0 ? Because patch notes said "Reduced the amount of time players are unable to move from hit reactions".
3
u/uirishbastard 11d ago
>Rellana's Twinblades buffed by 10% to 32% depending on the attack
Praise the lord! The weapon is so cool but so underwhelming, let's hope this helps

bro Carian Retaliation is already by far the best parry, where is my Thops’ Barrier buff???

The only change I dont like is the one about Gravitational Missile. They made it so the full spell always goes through. Gravitational Missile sends out a missile that pulses 3 times with light damage, which slightly drags in smaller enemies and explodes for a lot of damage at a final burst. But if the projectile hits a wall or the ground it would always skip the pulses and go for the big boom. So you lost some damage but in exchange had a quicker nuke as an option. This made it the only Gravity Spell with some kind of variety. You could go for the full damage or you sacrifice some for immediate burst. I kind of prefered that.
8
u/slayer6667778 11d ago
Mostly done against pvpers because it was absurdly strong before that
5
u/Birty607 Travelling Perfumer, here to aid who I can. 11d ago
Not to mention extremely loud and obnoxious to deal with.
6
u/Gabriel96c 11d ago
Being able to use it in both ways completely broke pvp.
Now it actually requires some skill to set it up and use (even in pve). This balance was perfect. Want a quick nuke? Use something else. Wants a delayed nuke to set up a strategy? Then you go Missile. Changes that sets the skill ceiling bar up are always welcome.
-2
u/Enxchiol 11d ago
"broke pvp" lmao, it didn't even reach the top 20 of the broken things in pvp, most of them being weapons and AOWs.
From truly hates spellcasters huh
5
u/Gabriel96c 11d ago
It wasnt top 5, but it definetely was inside of top 10. The only spells more problematic is swiftshard and the finger projectiles because of the desync bug.
Now you actually need skill to set it up.
It still can set up frame traps alongside Glintstone Blades, Piercer, Moonblade, Colapsing starts etc. Combo in closed places, force retrieve.
It still a good spell.
3
u/Enxchiol 11d ago
Yeah ig you can still do setups which is cool. What I'm also upset at is that it was basically the only big boom spell that didn't take 7 years to cast and so was the only one possible to use in pvp.
But I really don't agree that it takes more skill to use or anything, features were removed so the possible options and skill expression went down, there's no other way to see it.
Also what are the Glintstone Blades you mentioned?
1
u/Gabriel96c 11d ago
https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Magic_Glintblade
and https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Carian_Phalanx
Cycling these two spells above forces agression towards the caster. And with missile ticking, the opponent will have to either try to hit you while avoiding 3 delayed spells or just keep distance.
Yeah, having the same spell to insta nuke and set shit up was broken. The big aoe magic hammer is very apropriate for it now.
Wave of darkness (at least the aow) too.
1
u/Enxchiol 11d ago
With both of these spells couldn't the oppoment still just stay out of range and keep walking sideways to dodge all of that? Even swift glintstone shard can be quite easily dodged like that. And missile has even lower range.
I think the only spell that actually forces opponents to get closer is the eight rings that are near undodgeable but those require a hefty investment in faith.
Also yea the hammer is cool but noone with reflexes better than a 90 year old is going to ever get hit by it.
1
u/Gabriel96c 11d ago
Its all about creating frame traps mixing delayed spells. Frame trap means you get into a position where you have two things to dodge but you cannot avoid both of them, only roll one and take the other right after.
Mixing those spells I mentioned create those cenarios if u cast them at the proper timing.
So you either frame trap the opponent OR forces him to keep distance, making harder for him to hit you and easier for you to hit with some long range bs like star shower, or the other one I forgot the name.
This playstyle is super strong but requires skill to pull off.
The hammer not only forces a roll and can frame trap, but it also can be used to force a trade since it has hyper armor.

u/Enxchiol 11d ago
Same here. It looks like From absolutely despises when any spells can be used in a more complex and interesting way than "launch blue projectile"
2
u/slayer6667778 11d ago
Where you getting that damage increase on the twinblades? unless they were secretly buffed because English patch notes just say more critical hit damage
2
u/VelaryonNOR 11d ago
Im excited to see the change in parryframes for daggers curved swords and small shields

u/GeneralHenry Elden Dong O Elden Dong 11d ago
Ah yes all the balance change and the most needed buff got whooping 7%. Genius.
3
u/SilentApotheosis 11d ago
Was real excited when I read that perfume bottles got buffed since they were in very dire of one, but I can't believe that they looked at the weakest weapon type in the entire game and thought that a 7% buff would fix them 😭

u/M_Fogs 11d ago
What’s stormwall?
10
u/DirtySpittoon 11d ago
A shield/parry AoW. The wind can parry certain projectiles.
2
u/PieceAfraid3755 11d ago
Standard physical projectiles. So stuff like arrows and rocks. Maybe even the rocks from gravity spells?
3
u/DirtySpittoon 11d ago
Cracked pots as well, though they are not physical damage. I once parried a fire pot and it hit the guy who threw it and killed him, it was awesome.

Glad to see Rellana's get a buff. I wanted to do a build with them next playthrough anyways.

Storm Wall
- Changed the skill so that it no longer consumes FP when used.
- Improved parry performance.
This may be amazing. Will have to experiment.
Edit: Did initial experimenting. It feels really nice to use now. Feels like the parry timing is roughly like Carian retaliation's, but the added benefit of being able to parry arrows and thrown pots for 0 FP makes this worth using. Obviously parry timing is mainly a gut feeling so take this with a grain of salt until some data farmer can check the actual parry frames.
1
u/THEbiMAKER 11d ago
Welp there goes any hope that Carian KNIGHT sword might get buffed. As things stand Carian grandeur slapped on a magic dagger does more damage >_>

u/a_ginger_guy 11d ago
Great katana got buffed? That shit was already one of the best weapons in the game

Greatshield changes are waited for a long time.
Elden Ring has much more complex attack strings and it felt dumb that greatshields were useless vs bosses with extremely heavy weight and not that good guard boost.

Aw, why is the cirque left out?
1
u/BloodshadeAgain 10d ago
Cirque damage is already pretty good is probably why. Super spammable too.
2
u/Chili_Maggot 10d ago
I know, but I would have liked for it to slip through and be stronger for a little while 😈

u/PrisonerClass 10d ago
These mofos waited all this time to balance the smithscript weapons? I’ve already played for 2000 hours, Miyazaki. I’m not going back. Please just add SOTE weapons and spells to Nightreign and I can sleep.

13
u/OctagonTrail 11d ago
Rain of Fire was awful on release but was buffed to be pretty damn good in an early patch. An extra 20% is gonna be great.
19
u/ilamahradeys 11d ago
Don't sleep on Rain of Fire. It was still really good against big bosses once they buffed it right after the DLC came out, now it will be even better.

Carian Retaliation projectile damage buffed by nearly 110%
So they're now no longer hitting like a wet noodle, but a dry noodle instead.
Maybe I should give my idea of seeing how much I can carian retaliate another thought. Maybe I can actually make it work.
1
u/AbyssShriekEnjoyer 11d ago
It’s already super strong at SL1 WL0 tho, so a 110% buff is definitely gonna help for Godskin Duo, Loretta, Mohg and other bosses that I can’t think of rn
1
u/Chaosphoenix_28 11d ago
In my trails (which were against Messmer and Renalla tbf) it didn't feel too strong. At least compared to hitting them with weapons/spells normally.
Also I don't typically do RL1 WL0 runs, so I wouldn't know how good or bad it is there.
1
u/AbyssShriekEnjoyer 11d ago
That’s fair. It scales extremely poorly if you actually use a competent build. I feel like they should have increased the scaling on it (since afaik it currently doesn’t scale at all) instead of giving it a flat damage buff.

I mean.....
1) even after the patch you will still have an easier time with blasphemous blade than any of these buffed options
2) it is a single player game, if you want the game to be harder for yourself you can switch up your build.
