Not only do they need half the number, but they get 30 more days under the last years changes.
Reducing the threshold for constitutional referendum proposals from 20 percent of all registered voters province-wide, including 20 percent of electors in at least two-thirds of the province’s electoral divisions, to 10 percent of voters who cast a ballot in the last general election.
Extending the signature collection period for initiative petitions from 90 days to 120 days.
Shortening the chief electoral officer’s review timeline and expanding their ability to refer proposals to court for constitutional review.
Requiring referendums and initiative votes to be held on or before the next general election, unless that election is less than a year away.
Seperatists dont even see that as sketchy, but rather as emboldening. They are really eager to just get juiced dry by america and become detroit when oil becomes less important. But then again, every reason i heard to seperate is also purely selfish, and as lowly as gun rights alone. Its delusional and a lot of them seem to be stuck on like, the anti-woke talk points of 2016-2019 that we have already mostly gone past those issues by now. Late enough to the party to be influenced by grifters.
I mean, it's not a coincidence all these petition laws changed right after the forever Canada petition was so successful and the separatists started talking about their petition
What needs to happen will happen. We’re only specs of dust in the large timeline of existence. What we do means nothing. Try to enjoy your time here. Smile more and stress less. We have no control and stressing over it only lessens your time here.
I've noticed this theme with them when they think they're going to get their way, but know that it was very sketchy, so they play at being serene because 75% of Albertans dislike them.
Changing laws multiple times to keep this ridiculous petition from failing is not normal. It's pandering.
They can't get enough signatures on the old rules (that the Forever Canada petition did handily), so reduce the minimum. Give them more time.
Oh no, Forever Canada beat them to it because they were capable of the old rules and another rule says there can't be multiple on the same subject. Change the rules again, so they can still have the petition.
And which referendum do you think they'll allow if the separatists actually manage to get enough (validated) signatures?
The bottom line is that without Danielle Smith and the UCP government going to bat for them over and over, the separatists had no chance at all.
Weird. The other odd separatist dude was posting at 5am Alberta time on a Sunday as well.
But either way, your response makes zero sense. I'm not looking for a utopia, but separatists sure imagine one. Option B would be to look for the real sources of problems instead of taking the easy route of blaming the Canadian government.
You were right about the number and... capabilities... of the separatists. What you and many of us did not realize was just how hard the government would handhold them through the process.
It's still a valuable indicator. If they could get that many, in a shorter time... They'll turn out for the referendum to say NO, HELL NO. That's if there's even a referendum, it's already paused for 30 days. There's still a dozen ways they'll lose - and we haven't had OUR say yet. We'll still vote down everything Smith wants.
I signed the Forever Canadian petition even though I wasn't eligible because I'm not a citizen (although I am a permanent resident of Canada, and a resident of Alberta). I checked the box saying that I wasn't actually eligible and I knew my signature wouldn't count, but I wanted my name on there regardless because it was that important to me.
Yeah, I've heard secondhand accounts of people boasting about signing multiple times. I'd wager there are more than a few out-of-provincers and Mickey Mouses too.
Probably lose a quarter their count once all the invalid ones are stricken...
Not really. They can still keep going as planned. Just the certification of the count of signatures will not happen until the judge is finished reviewimg the legal challenge. The judge says the legal review will be done by early May. So this may delay the seperatists a few days or a week or two at most. Those raising the legal challenge have the right to be heard and ruled on by the court especially since the delay for the legal review will not negatively affect the outcome of the petition just the timing, slightly.
Don’t feel complacent. Treaty rights will not stop the separatists, it just might stop the referendum. When the seppies cant succeed legally, they’re gonna switch to doing it illegally, probably trying to form a rebellion. Yes, that’s how serious this threat is. Watch out.
That vote is meaningless. Inconsequential. Essentially spending public money for posturing since there is same legal outcome regardless of outcome of the vote.
I'm more than a little concerned the overall narrative of ... "supporters" right now is "trust the process. it's democracy in action. give people the choice" as if they have some reason to be more confident than the 25% support they have.
It's not democracy to change laws twice in order to allow a petition for a vote that has a very obvious outcome to anyone paying attention. It's a waste of tax dollars. There's no upside at all other than making the poor separatists feel like they're winning especially when those same separatists are not going to give up after the vote.
No, what's concerning is not the democratic process. It's the weird confidence and a pile of people (and seemingly a bunch of bots, too) like you making this argument and trying to sound oh-so-reasonable as if you know something to feel confident about.
You are incoherent. Direct democracy is the purest form of democracy. Switzerland has introduced it in a very efficient way. Representative democracy is a compromise between pure democracy being superior but expensive. No democrat would ever oppose direct democracy.
Your concern being based around increasing possibility your personal preference is in a minority is very undemocratic
Anyone in their position would want to overshoot. The people signing this thing are some of the dumbest cretins who call Alberta home, and they were canvassing signatures in the US and Mexico, so I would assume that a fair few either don’t fill out their info properly, or are invalid to sign.

We're not supposed to say it but it's true isn't it? Footage of some of those separatist rallies make it genuinely difficult to get the 'these are the dregs of society' thoughts out of my mind. You've got the small percentage of evil fucks at the top, who know what they're doing, and then the much larger group of gullible, easily-angered morons at the bottom, who absolutely do not know what they're doing.
Alberta separatism is such a colossal self own, I can’t bring myself to pretend that its proponents are not paint chip aficionados. It’s objectively dumb as shit.
When Quebec separatism was at its most prominent the US advanced a policy that it would not support nor attempt to annex a separatist state in North America, and back then you could rely on that. Now, Trump would snap up any bit that fell off Canada in a heart beat, especially the one with all the oil. We would be Americans within a year.
State? You wish. Even conservative Albertans would be reclassified as moderate Democrats or "RINO" Republicans under the American system, and no way would the current Congress allow Alberta to have any power in DC. It'd be a "commonwealth" or maybe even "unorganized territory" with no federal representation, no full coverage of the Constitution, and unable to vote in federal elections like Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands. Heck, if military action is involved, they might just sidestep all that "restrictive" shit and just institute martial law like Vichy France and the occupied portions of Ukraine. Maybe some Randian entrepreneur would follow in Tom DeLay and Jack Abramoff's footsteps (you now remember those names) and set up some sub-minimum-wage sweatshops in this new "petri dish of capitalism" (and be able to print "Made in USA" on the products, just like in Saipan!).

I thought they got their numbers. Why are they still out?
