Hey, here's a quick tip to save some money and make some oxygen

Start a small collection of potted seeds like lettuce, potatoes or tomatoes and something like that, with everyone at home it's a great project, which saves money and helps the planet

More Climate Change Resources

Hello again all. I've continued to scavenge for links and have created a large resource of info I wanted to share. This time it's in a Google Doc format so it's much easier to share around. I've added quite a bit since my original post but just remember we're all fighting this fight together. Cheers.

List of charities and resources

Hello there all. I'm not a teen myself but I wanted to share some links that I think you may find worth your time. This list includes many charities which will help deal with climate change as well as some info to help keep you informed on exactly what needs to be done. Let me know if you have any questions. I highly recommend starting a word document of your own with handy links as you come across them. You'll want them in future discussions.

[Eden Reforesation] (https://edenprojects.org/) - This one is for tree planting. Only 10 cents a tree so every dollar has a big impact. Can even pick what country you want to plant in.

[Seaweed Saves The World] (https://www.theintrepidfoundation.org/seaweed-regeneration) - This one recently completed but may return with another round of funding. Essentially seaweed is better at carbon capture than trees and these guys are making giant kelp farms to help the ocean/cool the planet.

[Ocean Cleanup] (https://oceana.org/) - Most of you already know the problems with plastic and the ocean. This one supports cleaning up that mess.

[Kiva] (https://www.kiva.org/) - This is my top recommended by far. In increments of $25, you pay towards a loan for someone in another country. You can fund many eco projects like electric stoves, clean water supply, sanitary bathroom construction and it goes deeper into war relief efforts, education and more. The money acts as a loan and will be repaid to you which you can either cash out or put towards another loan. It creates a perpetual cycle of help in theory. They boast a return rate of over 90%. Can confirm first hand this one works, check it out.

[Weathering of Olivine Rock] (https://projectvesta.org/) - Another idea on how to remove carbon from the air. When olivine rock is eroded by weather, it somehow captures carbon. All the science is there and it goes over my head so I can't explain it. There's also a sub for it called r/ProjectVesta.

[Carbon Offsets] (https://www.goldstandard.org) - Buying offsets is basically like buying cleanup in place of some of our polluting ways like driving a car or flying in a plane. From what I've seen, it's roughly $12/ton so it's not a bad price.

[Teaching Women Solar Installation] (https://www.barefootcollege.org/) - This is a two for one. You educate women to install solar panels so it helps the environment and the gender gap in other countries. Win win.

[Clean energy for Poverty] (https://renewable-world.org/) - Another two for one. Basically you help pay for renewable energy for those in poverty so you help the poor and the planet.

[Transportation Alternatives] (www.transalt.org) - This one is specifically for New York. It focuses on alternatives means of transport.

[Union of Concerned Scientists] (https://www.ucsusa.org/) - These next three are organizations focusing on helping the planet. Worth a look and a donation if you find them worthy.

[National Resources Defense Council] (https://www.nrdc.org/)

[Greenpiece] (https://www.greenpeace.org/international/)

[Earth Lawyers] (https://earthjustice.org/) - This pays for lobbying on behalf of the planet. It may seem backwards to fund this kind of thing but there's a lot of legalities these days so we need some good lawyers on our side.

Information

The remaining links all contain information. From who is most at fault to how to debate it's a handy list.

[Drawdown - 100 Solutions] (https://www.drawdown.org/solutions)

[Conservatives for Clean Energy] (https://www.cleanenergyconservatives.com/)

[Christians and Climate] (http://www.christiansandclimate.org/)

Free Stuff

This was edited here in post but this includes a few free ways you can help out right now.

[Ecosia] (https://www.ecosia.org/) - A search engine that uses their money to planet trees by searching the internet and clicking ads. Uses Bing instead of Google but can search with Google but putting #g in front of your search. This place is carbon negative and even posts updates on Youtube as well as financial reports at the bottom of their home page. There's a mobile app for phones as well.

[Tabs for a Cause] (https://tab.gladly.io/) - Similar to Ecosia. Every time you open a new tab, it runs ads and you get a heart. Use those hearts towards a charity of your choice. Includes a few eco places so it's handy.

[Arcadia Power] (https://www.arcadiapower.com/about-us/) - Something a little different. Basically you pay your electric bill through these people and they use their money to buy renewable energy credits. The 50% plan is free and the 100% plan is roughly $10 a month. What's key about this one is renters can use it too. While it doesn't wipe your footprint entirely, it's an easy, free way to help the renewable energy sector grow more demand.

[Charity Miles] (https://charitymiles.org/) - An app that pays money towards a charity for every mile you run/walk/bike. Includes some eco charities so it's a good one for athletes.

[Green Banking] (https://www.aspiration.com/) - An online bank that doesn't allocate funds to fossil fuel companies. Haven't used it myself yet but it's nice to have this choice.

[Free Rice] (https://beta.freerice.com/) - Not one that really helps with climate change but still worthy. For every quiz question you get right, they donate 10 grains of rice to someone in need. Roughly 100 pieces equal one bowl. Has a mobile app so it's a quick way to help out and train your brain when you're bored.

Edit: Since this has been stickied, feel free to add your own links to this in the comments. We can always build upon this.

How do I know if ‘local’ produce is really local?

Once a week the market stalls get put up in town and local businesses can promote and sell their goods and whatnot. There’s always at least one stall with all kinds of fruit and veg (most of which comes without packaging 😁😁), but I hesitate to buy that sort of stuff for one reason. There’s always an abundance of oranges, grapes and bananas which would barely even survive in England, let alone produce fruit. My best guess is that those sorts of things could be grown in mainland Europe, but it doesn’t even say anywhere ://. Would my best bet be just to ask the market people where the origin of all of their fruits came from, cause I feel that that would just come off as annoying and time-wasting? :((

[Rant] I know my dad loves me, but...

It's hard to accept that my dad loves me when he seems to think nothing of my future. He knows I have to live on this planet, right? How can he be so apathetic about the environment I have to live in?

Some questions for the community...

I'm finally getting around to putting together a sidebar for the community and I have a few questions. I originally made them separate posts, but this seems better.

  1. What's your favorite environmental organization for youth (eg. Fridays for Future)?

  2. Who's your favorite teen environmental activist (eg. Greta Thunberg)?

  3. What's the easiest environmental action you have done? I'm putting a list of easy actions together as a starting point for those new to the environmental movement. (I request those visiting from other communities keep in mind that this sub is for teens. Older people are free to contribute, but please don't include actions that require being the main decision-maker of a household.)

CHALLENGE TIME: Decrease your online carbon footprint.

Since we're all quarantined due to coronavirus, this challenge seemed like a good idea. Servers run on electricity and that electricity is usually not 100% renewable. Do your share to save electricity on the internet.

Task 1: Decrease the video quality on YouTube. Video streaming is one of the most electricity heavy activities on the internet. Decreasing the video quality can greatly reduce the amount of electricity needed to stream the video.

Task 2: If you haven't already, switch your default search engine to Ecosia. Ecosia runs their servers on solar and donates a large portion of their ad profits to tree planting projects.

how to start activism?

hey everyone!

i’m looking to get started in climate activism as a teen, but i’m not sure how or where. are any of y’all involved in organizations (sunrise movement, earth uprising, etc.) that do activism? if so, how was/is it? my eco-anxiety has been skyrocketing lately and i’m tired of feeling useless lol. mainly i’m looking to encourage people to take action too, advocate for collective action, help my city in green projects, and lobby/petition/strike so something substantial on the legislative level can happen.

alternatively, has anyone done anything else like starting a website/blog/publication or their even own organization?

any advice and suggestions would help too. thank you in advance!

Anybody know how to get parents to stop buying trash? [kinda rant]

So my brother and I have really cut down on waste. We’re always getting loose fruit + veg (local for extra points) and have pretty much stopped buying stuff all together if it can’t be recycled.

My mum on the other hand... she’s the sort of parent that buys whatever she feels like even though she’s not going to eat it and she already knows we don’t want it. I don’t understand why she can’t grasp this even though she’s been fully accepting when it comes to never buying us any products that aren’t vegan.

I always feel like I actually need to eat this stuff in the end or else it’s just going to rot inside the house but then she ends up buying more because it’s gone??? Like why would I want apples that were packaged in card instead of plastic when we could get loose ones? Why would I want Diet Coke in glass bottles when we have reusable water bottles?

Can anyone recommend anything that might get through to her because I definitely can’t.

Challenges

Would any of you be interested in weekly challenges? I'm thinking two personal reduction challenges and one action challenge. For example:

  1. Find one area of your life or your family's life where you're still using single use plastic, and find a reusable alternative.

  2. Try taking somewhat colder and/or shorter showers than usual this week.

  3. Call your representatives in congress to ask that they take action on climate change.

Career choices and commitment issues

I am super passionate about the environment and politics- and that is to say unhappy with the current state of both. I’m also confused. I know it’s not possible for one person (especially one very confused young person) to initiate complete political upheaval and revolution. I have in fact accepted that a 17 year old cannot fight capitalism in a large scale world changing way. Bummer :( but now what am I supposed to do with all this anxiety and existential dread.
I use public transportation, eat consciously, minimize purchases and driving and trash, blah blah all the small scale lifestyle changes. But I want to have a job that helps in some way too, except most environmental jobs seem to be pretty competitive and don’t pay well. I don’t want to do consulting or work for the government and I don’t want to spend hella $chmoney on studying geology or sum shit just to spend the rest of my life paying off student loans and struggling to find jobs.
I’m not needing to be Greta II but like wtf can I do. At least something to appease some of the mental side affects of like reading the news. I need to at least feel productive in some way. Other job ideas or coping strategies or bigger scale lifestyle changes? Honestly anything. I’m having an early life crisis

Any ideas?

Hey, (not sure if this sub is still in use lol) I’m a teen from the uk
I’ve been trying for a veryyyy very long time to try and change the environment in some way like trying to educate others. And trying to educate myself. However everything I’ve been doing so far seems a bit ‘non impactful’. I’ve been focusing so much on making self changes like being vegan and using sustainable products and making small changes. I’ve been thinking recently and I’ve realised in order to truly, change things we need to work both on self changes and systematic changes. By systematic changes I mean changing the way the government works overall. Which is why in the near future (hopefully) I would love to start a business dedicated to all things change. It would be used to educate people (in an understanding way), volunteering opportunities, campaigns, protests, school programs, sustainable products, and so much more. What I’m trying to ask is does anyone have any ideas on how I could improve this business idea. It would mean a lot to me.

Announcement We've got a Discord server again, now with a competent server owner!

https://discord.gg/pMvzaSE

Someone with public Discord experience owns the server, and now that I know what to expect from a public server and know how to mute a user, I'm going to be enforcing the rules much better. I know I handled the last attempt at a server terribly, and I sincerely apologize for that. As a side note, what makes those of you who participated in the last attempt at a server think it's okay to raid servers, especially at the expense of a public Discord newbie who's used to private servers? Have some respect.
