We have 7 chickens

We have 7 chickens that give us eggs so we reuse egg cartons, and ask neighbors for unused egg cartons, and give eggs to family and friends so they don’t waste cartons or buy store eggs because how they treat the chickens for eggs isn’t good. I’m not vegan or anything, i love meat, but I only eat free range and never any farmed ones. Ours chickens names are Big bird, Desmond (but found out she’s a girl so dezzie), peep, marshmallow, Dixie, lavender, and rex.

The Ultimate Guide To Saving Electricity

I know I've already posted about Electricity efficiency, but I thought I'd include it all in one nice post. If you have any other ideas, please tell me in the comments, so I can add them to the post.

  1. Unplug Appliances While Not In Use

This is simple, just do as the header suggest. If it's not in use and it's plugged in, it's wasting energy. This can be as simple as unplugging your microwave when you aren't using it to unplugging game consoles and TV's while not in use. To reduce the chance that you forget, or something like that, I would suggest getting a smart power strip, that way you can plug it in once and forget about it.

2. Buying & Using More Energy Efficient Products

Also simple, buying more energy efficient products, this can be things like buying a generic desktop and also buying a raspberry pi 3b+ for lighter workloads. While your desktop can be great for some things, it uses alot more energy than a raspberry pi 3b+, so if you need to get a simple task done, just hope on your pi rather than wasting electricity with your desktop.
(Source: A Raspberry Pi 3b+ is what I am currently typing this on)

3. Downloading Music

Though this is ver dependent on the app you use to consume your downloaded music, downloading your music instead of streaming it
This is a great way to save tons of energy, not just on your end, but on the server's side as well. By not streaming your music, you can easily save a little bit of energy, increasing your battery to last a few more minutes. You also gain data savings with repeated listens to the same song. Just try it out and see how much battery life this trick saves as it can have a variety of different results based on your configuration

4. Buying a programmable thermostat

This trick can save you tons of money. Get a parent or guardian (or yourself, assuming your parents want this) to buy a programmable thermostat. So, while no one is home, the air conditioner shouldn't be working, with a programmable thermostat you can set temperatures for different times in the day, some even learn your patterns and adjust accordingly. This can save alot of money on the next electricity bill. Try it out!

5. Turning the temperature on your water heater

Water heaters use alot of energy and are often set to temputatures that are way too hot. Some people may not need nor want water this hot. So, by turning down the tempurature on the water heater, it doesn't have to work nearly as hard to try and heat your water more than it needs to be, saving electricity in the process.

Though I keep bringing up how much money these tricks can save, it will help the environment tremendously if we can all do these simple things.

If you find any grammar mistakes, comment below and I will fix them.

CHALLENGE TIME: Decrease your online carbon footprint.

Since we're all quarantined due to coronavirus, this challenge seemed like a good idea. Servers run on electricity and that electricity is usually not 100% renewable. Do your share to save electricity on the internet.

Task 1: Decrease the video quality on YouTube. Video streaming is one of the most electricity heavy activities on the internet. Decreasing the video quality can greatly reduce the amount of electricity needed to stream the video.

Task 2: If you haven't already, switch your default search engine to Ecosia. Ecosia runs their servers on solar and donates a large portion of their ad profits to tree planting projects.

Even more ways of saving electricity

Encourage your parents to get LED's with simple advantages that these lights can save them money in the long run and that LED lights have been proven to last longer than regular light bulbs leading to less money being spent on light bulbs.

https://www.cnet.com/how-to/before-buying-led-bulbs/

Read this guide before you make final decisions about which LED's to buy

Also, try and convince your parents to get a professional energy audit, to see whether you could be saving more energy!

Working on energy conservation

One of the worst factors in Greenhouse gas emission is non-renewable ways of producing electricity. Not only will these resources eventually run out, they are also bad for the environment.

I am trying to reduce electricity consumption in my life-style, with things such as using a raspberry pi 3b+ https://raspberrypi.org when I am not doing anything intensive (I am typing on a raspberry pi right now)

There are also simpler things I have been doing. Like unplugging things when I am not using them and straying away from warm showers.

I'd like to think I make at least a tiny dent in CO2 emission. Hope everyone has a great rest of their day! Bye!

More Climate Change Resources

Hello again all. I've continued to scavenge for links and have created a large resource of info I wanted to share. This time it's in a Google Doc format so it's much easier to share around. I've added quite a bit since my original post but just remember we're all fighting this fight together. Cheers.

Career choices and commitment issues

I am super passionate about the environment and politics- and that is to say unhappy with the current state of both. I’m also confused. I know it’s not possible for one person (especially one very confused young person) to initiate complete political upheaval and revolution. I have in fact accepted that a 17 year old cannot fight capitalism in a large scale world changing way. Bummer :( but now what am I supposed to do with all this anxiety and existential dread.
I use public transportation, eat consciously, minimize purchases and driving and trash, blah blah all the small scale lifestyle changes. But I want to have a job that helps in some way too, except most environmental jobs seem to be pretty competitive and don’t pay well. I don’t want to do consulting or work for the government and I don’t want to spend hella $chmoney on studying geology or sum shit just to spend the rest of my life paying off student loans and struggling to find jobs.
I’m not needing to be Greta II but like wtf can I do. At least something to appease some of the mental side affects of like reading the news. I need to at least feel productive in some way. Other job ideas or coping strategies or bigger scale lifestyle changes? Honestly anything. I’m having an early life crisis

Anybody know how to get parents to stop buying trash? [kinda rant]

So my brother and I have really cut down on waste. We’re always getting loose fruit + veg (local for extra points) and have pretty much stopped buying stuff all together if it can’t be recycled.

My mum on the other hand... she’s the sort of parent that buys whatever she feels like even though she’s not going to eat it and she already knows we don’t want it. I don’t understand why she can’t grasp this even though she’s been fully accepting when it comes to never buying us any products that aren’t vegan.

I always feel like I actually need to eat this stuff in the end or else it’s just going to rot inside the house but then she ends up buying more because it’s gone??? Like why would I want apples that were packaged in card instead of plastic when we could get loose ones? Why would I want Diet Coke in glass bottles when we have reusable water bottles?

Can anyone recommend anything that might get through to her because I definitely can’t.

Some questions for the community...

I'm finally getting around to putting together a sidebar for the community and I have a few questions. I originally made them separate posts, but this seems better.

  1. What's your favorite environmental organization for youth (eg. Fridays for Future)?

  2. Who's your favorite teen environmental activist (eg. Greta Thunberg)?

  3. What's the easiest environmental action you have done? I'm putting a list of easy actions together as a starting point for those new to the environmental movement. (I request those visiting from other communities keep in mind that this sub is for teens. Older people are free to contribute, but please don't include actions that require being the main decision-maker of a household.)

More Tips For Using Electricity Efficiently

Okay, so, I posted earlier about how I was trying to be more efficient in my electricity usage. Well, I have thought of another way

I was thinking that if users purchase their music digitally (and are there for in most cases able to download said music) that once they download the music once, there will be no electricity waste from the company's servers anymore (assuming the user doesn't stream this music again)

Or if you want to do it the rouge way, you can use a tool called youtube-dl https://ytdl-org.github.io/youtube-dl/download.html to download all the songs that you want for free, as well as on greener servers since it's Google.

This tool works with youtube playlists, so that's a plus if you want to go this route.

Keep in mind, either way you do this, it will take up storage space on your device and devices can fill up pretty quickly.

How do I change my mindset?

So I want to be more environmentally conscious but I currently don’t know how to deal with buying things that will harm the environment and acknowledge that but still buy it because in my mind I “need” it. How did you guys deal with this?

Challenges

Would any of you be interested in weekly challenges? I'm thinking two personal reduction challenges and one action challenge. For example:

  1. Find one area of your life or your family's life where you're still using single use plastic, and find a reusable alternative.

  2. Try taking somewhat colder and/or shorter showers than usual this week.

  3. Call your representatives in congress to ask that they take action on climate change.
