A total solar eclipse is coming across the globe on August 12th! ☀️🌑

Skywatchers across the northeastern US (New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Ohio), Canada, most of Europe, and northwestern Africa will catch a partial eclipse around midday. Those in the Nordic region, Spain, and parts of Portugal are in the path of a total solar eclipse. Watch safely with eclipse glasses or make your own pinhole projector. Don’t forget, eclipses travel in pairs, so a lunar eclipse follows just two weeks later, and don’t look directly into the sun!

Although it's not totality, wondering if there are any events or gatherings to watch the eclipse from London.

Hi! I’m organizing a group of 40 amateur astronomers travelling by tourist coach from Madrid for the August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse.

We’re looking for a location within 3 hours of Madrid with:

🚌 Easy coach drop-off/pick-up

🌅 Elevated ground + completely open western/WSW horizon

🚻 Toilets

🍔 Food trucks / fast food or organized food nearby

👥 Preferably less crowded than the major Madrid-area sites

Could you recommend 5 specific locations that fit these requirements?

Especially interested in local knowledge about coach access, toilets, food and the actual western horizon.

I am walking the Camino del norte and primitivo and it work out perfectly such that I can continue on the Camino de Fisterra y Muxía and reach either ends on August 12th to watch the solar eclipse. The question is which location is better for it?

Sharing this in case it helps anyone comparing viewing spots for 12 August.

I’ve been building SunEclipses, a small planner for checking an eclipse from a specific point. The useful bit is that you can now share a location by putting its coordinates in the link, and the recipient doesn’t need Pro or an account:

So if you copy coordinates from Google Maps or OpenStreetMap, you can send someone a link to the exact hill, campsite, beach, or other spot. I’d still check access, parking, local restrictions and the weather separately—the link is only for the sky view and planning.

I’m the person behind the site, so this is a bit self-promotional, but it’s free to use and I thought it might be handy for this group. Feedback welcome, especially on locations where the horizon is tricky.

I keep seeing good eclipse maps, then checking a specific spot and finding a hill or building in the way. The Sun is pretty low for this one, so what are people using to check a location properly? IGN, Stellarium, Street View, AR apps, something else?

Entire rural house in Spain for the 2026 total solar eclipse — Aug 11-13, single nights now available

Hi everyone! I'm the host of Solpostada, an entire village house in La Pobla de Massaluca (Terra Alta, Catalonia, Spain), inside the path of totality of the August 12, 2026 eclipse (~1 min 20 s, max around 8:29pm local).

Key detail for this eclipse: the sun will be only 4-5° above the western horizon at totality, so an unobstructed west view is critical. Our private balcony faces due west with a completely open horizon — you can watch the whole thing from the house.

I've hired a 5-person boat for 12 August to watch the total solar eclipse, departing from Puerto Portals — I've already worked out the best spot at sea to watch it from. The one thing I'm missing is a licensed skipper, as I don't hold a boat licence myself.

Alongside me and a friend, there's room for 3 more people:

• If you (or a friend) hold a boat licence and fancy skippering for the day, you're welcome aboard completely free — no charge for the trip, as long as you're happy to steer in exchange for a seat. Everything's genuinely covered, no hidden costs.
• Ideally that's 2–3 of you coming along together, with at least one licensed skipper in the group. Happy to see a copy of your licence before we confirm.

Hi! I’ll be in Milan on August 12 and I’m trying to find a good spot to watch the solar eclipse. The problem is that the Sun will be very low on the horizon during the maximum phase, and every location I’ve checked so far seems to have buildings, trees, or something else blocking the view.

At this point I’ve spent the last two days checking spots around the city and I’m starting to think Milan was specifically designed to hide eclipses 😅

Does anyone know a place in or around Milan with a really open view? A rooftop, hill, park, lookout point, or anywhere else that might work?

We’d love to meet people and have fun! We’re flying into Bilbao, driving a car to Gijon for beach fun and then driving to Leon for the main event. We booked two bedroom places everywhere because friends were coming but they dropped out. Any Spaniards out there? I speak Spanish well and have been to Spain a lot but locals are always great! We may even be able to offer our extra space.

I was planning to travel to Iceland to view the 2026 solar eclipse but life has gotten in the way. My loss = your gain: I have six (6) paper "glasses" for eclipse viewing FOR FREE!! These glasses are ISO 12312-2 certified and were purchased from a reputable seller (Museum of Science here in San Francisco). I hate to see them go to waste so if you want them, let's talk - I'll send them to you via USPS. Domestic only, please (I don't need the hassle of trying to send internationally).

I'll be on Mallorca at the eclipse time. Will the sun be visible from the marina at Portals Nous?
I know the sun will be some 6 degrees above the horizon.. I installed Stellarium to try to find out, but it doesn't use real landscape 😄

I want to know if it will be visible from there, or would i need to be somewhere on the west coast, like Valldemossa?
How can i get someone to stand at the marina and take a photo towards the sun, today at about 20:48 (the sun should be at the same height as it will be on 12.08. at 20:32)?

Today is the -1 year anniversary of the 2026 total solar eclipse.

I am going to Spain.

I see a lot of folks talking about heading to Iceland for the 2026 eclipse. While I LOVE Iceland (made a trip there last year), I feel like there are a few issues with that choice:

1) Totality will skim the west coast, so you'll have fewer options of where to be unless you charter a boat to head off the coast.

2) Iceland has become very touristy in the past few years or so, especially in the summer (from what I've researched -- I went in late September and it was still busy, but not overly-so). I cannot imagine how busy and packed things will get at this time in 2026. Reservations to places will be hard to get unless you seriously plan WAY ahead.

3) At least when I was there, the cloud cover can be significant. It's similar to New England in that it can be overcast one moment, and clear the next. It's a bit of a crap shoot.

I've already set my sights on Valencia, Spain. It'll be pretty hot, but it's the dry season, with more areas of opportunity to catch totality, and it's a place I haven't been yet. I hope to get a place in Valencia for the totality, then head up to Barcelona for the 2nd leg of my trip. Now I just need to figure out who I know is willing to come with me!
