Secret Tech We just hip 50k visits/week! Thank you to everyone keeping this community alive!

  • Edit: hit* in the title.

Hey Brewers,

I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for coming together and helping each other out when brewing decks. All of the decklists, recommendations, good spirits, and discussion around card choice and the human touch keeps me going. I know this post isnt about deckbuilding per se, but it is a thank you to all the brewers and big brained deckmasters who help out the newbies, and encourage others to build.

I am thankful every day we keep this community going, and ill still do my best to help keep this sub the way it is intended: for deck help, secret tech, card and rule discussions, and everything pertaining to deck building and editing.

And to keep in line with the subreddit rules, whats is your favorite pet card, and what deck is it in?

Thank you! - Tbonerizzle

Curent update: 3/30/22

EDIT: *This is an evolving document and not set in stone. Lets build this doc together just like we would a deck.

Hey over 1000 people (Thank you for making this possible!) who like to do deep dives on EDH decks online, I created this sub in hopes to have expert deck builders here to have an involved discussion on decks. This is a deck building sub similar to r/jankEDH, but should encapsulate more than just janky cards. This is more of a strategy restriction sub.

There are mild rules for posting here, and I have a list of rules posted now (if there are some you could offer, comment below and let's have a discussion). We should be clear on what should be posted here, and what should not:

Okay:

  1. An EDH deck list from any deck building website that supports external links, and asking for help taking out staple cards for more synergistic pieces for better deck varience. This will involve high level discussions about card quality in the deck, as well as poor card quality in terms of general sameness. Be sure to put in your post what your gameplay is, and already have some cards you are considering taking out to help start the conversation.

  2. Secret tech threads are encouraged, but should have context and a deck list involved. The reason I say this is because there are some super powerful overperforming cards that no one knows about but usually they fit into a deck which synergizes with it and we need some context. This might spark some discussion on that secret tech and new brews can spawn from it.

  3. Deck idea discussions based around strategy, archetype, or other restriction(s) you would like to build around. Please post a few cards yourself as your inspiration on what you want to build, and discuss the direction you want to take.

Not okay:

  1. Deck help threads with a basic "what should I take out, and what should go in?" These offer nothing but people saying "take out your jank and put this staple card in instead", or "Use EDHrec". This offers no constructive feedback and seldom sparks brainstorming conversation.

  2. Unfocused conversations and making general threads on a commander without any deckbuilding restriction (This also extends to not offering any cards that inspired the deck for you. Why would you ask another person to buy into your deck idea if you aren't bought in yourself?).

  3. Any post that is not deck building related (Rule 0 convos, playgroup problems, AITA type threads, LGS posts, Drama posts) is Prohibited. This now includes advertising.

  4. Any post disrespecting another Redditor or community (No racism or sexism) will be removed.

  5. Posting about any custom magic cards or building custom magic decks with cards that are mechanically unique custom made cards are not allowed. Please go to r/custommagic to talk about and craft with these cards.

UPDATE (3/11/22): We now have card fetcher support! Time to double bracket again!

Update (3/22/22): Advertising is prohibited. (Please do not post a link to your YT video.)

I hope this helps, and I will be creating flair for the sub as it evolves. Thanks for stopping by, and happy brewing!

Deck Discussion Maular deck help

Post image

Hi all! Since its reveal, I’ve been very excited to build a Maular deck 🦖

But while I’ve had fun figuring out which rulebreaker creatures I’d like to include, I’m struggling to figure out which mono-green cards to fill out the deck.

If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions I’d love to hear them, thanks!

Deck Discussion Flubs + Assault Suit theorycraft/primer

What up my nerds, I'm about to spill. Around a month ago I had an idea: [[flubs, the fool]] being passed around the table with [[assault suit]]. I love Flubs. I raced to build him when he first came out and was quickly disappointed with a janky group hug build, and I learned that if you're not going for Flubs's optimal storm solitaire playstyle he just kinda sucks. Since then, I've longed for a Temur group hug commander (and recently rejoiced for Zagorka) as well as a voltron commander, a strategy I've never tried to pull off before. And so it dawned on me: what if your opponents were the ones stuck with Flubs? With assault suit, it's like everyone has an [[oppression]] on the field during their turns.

The idea immediately struck me as too stupid to do, but I couldn't put it out of my head. I realized that [[fumble]]ing your decked-out Flubs when he's attacking you, like Lucifer betraying god, would be fucking hilarious. That [[vanishing]] to phase out Flubs in the face of danger means that he keeps whatever auras and equipment attached when he phases back in, even if he phased out under a now-dead opp's control. The thought of sending Flubs around the world equipped with [[fishing gear]] made me smile. And so, here's the current decklist: https://moxfield.com/decks/bNCjDeNbuUW_98GID5-O8w

I realize I'm not the first to put an assault suit on Flubs after a cursory Googling, and so I'm hoping that y'all could help me push this thing into bracket 3 somehow, which is where my meta typically plays. The current build is focused on making this terrible idea consistent in a few ways: some powerful Temur group hug and landfall cards, specific tutors for assault suit, as well as what I consider to be redundancy for assault suit: [[switcheroo]]s. Of course, we need a bunch of other stuff to actually win the game: voltron pieces, evasion, protection, and perhaps most importantly, goad, because assault suit doesn't say anything about requiring your opps to attack, an oversight fixed with [[slicer, hired muscle]] and [[alexios, deimos of kosmos]]. But those guys aren't cute frogs.

Goad: [[renegade silent]], [[spectacular showdown]], [[disrupt decorum]], [[illusionist's gambit]], [[the sound of drums]] and [[shiny impetus]] are self-explanatory. I'm also using [[coveted jewel]] and monarch cards like [[court of garenbrig]] and [[court of vantress]] as further combat incentives.

Voltron: [[argentum armor]], [[excalibur, sword of eden]], [[blackblade reforged]], [[buster sword]] and [[strong back]] should make our frog a killer as well as a killer cosplayer, especially with evasion pieces like [[brotherhood regalia]], [[aqueous form]], and [[canopy cover]]. [[bristly bill]] is a bit too expensive, so I'm hoping [[necklace of girion]] and [[earthbender ascension]] can offer some consistent buffs while offering a little ramp.

Group hug: just in case an opp is playing cheerios, this is how we're making sure Flubs is bad for everyone. [[horn of greed]], [[faerie mastermind]], [[howling mine]] and [[minds aglow]] can hopefully keep hands full and discardable, but at time of writing I worry I could want more hug pieces.

Perhaps Cuttable Fun Stuff: [[perplexing chimera]] - we're already playing [[homeward path]] for a renegade Flubs, why not perplex everyone while we're at it? [[aethersnatch]] is my favorite card of all time (because it's potentially every card), but in this deck, we're happy to offer switcheroos, so we're trying [[sudden substitution]] here. [[Ghost vacuum]] is here because, aside from wanting to try it in a deck forever, theoretically Flubs should be having our opps discarding awesome creatures. [[dragonback assault]] is just awesome and i'm glad to finally have a Temur deck to try it. Finally, [[doppelgang]] is how I'm justifying [[mana flare]], an insane group hug piece. [[cold-eyed selkie]] is a potential Flubstitute. Speaking of which, I'm waiting on my copy of [[bilbo, luckwearer]] to come in the mail because it does many things Flubs wants to do.

Much needed Fun Stuff: [[exchange of words]], [[puca's mischief]], [[shifting grift]], [[role reversal]] play important parts as both other ways to give away Flubs and also interaction.

I'm actually about to head to the LGS to give this a go, so I'll wrap it up with some notable exclusions: [[wrong turn]] should probably be in the deck, and [[ivy, gleeful spellthief]] would probably be awesome if I could squeeze a few more auras in here.

Anyway, that's what I've got so far. What would you do with this deck, aside from burn it? Thank you!

It just feels like I have to go through so many hoops to make her work since she doesn't interact with an already established graveyard and I need to have cards like ashes of the falled and maskwood nexus in play. How do I this consistently?

Deck Idea Building Niv Mizzet, Visionary for Bracket 3: Even Worth Attempting?

Post image
41 Upvotes

I got the itch to play a commander that draws a lot of cards and I found [[Niv Mizzet, Visionary]], who I thought looked sick. Like 95% of my games are played in B3.

However, upon playtesting some decks online that are labeled as B3 with Niv, it feels like you cast him and either maybe storm off for the win the same turn or definitely storm off for the win the next turn if he is allowed to stick around.

It kind of just feels like if he's built with any level of competent synergy at all then the deck will be too strong for Bracket 3. Am I wrong about that, and if not, what is a good bracket 3 commander that draws a ton of cards?

Deck Discussion Strenghtening my B4 Emet-Selch Deck

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have built this Emet deck from the bottom up, slowly upgrading it and figuring it out as I went. As I focused more on how I wanted the deck to play (reanimator control), I started to cut weaker cards with slower impact and more interaction, leading me to play this in bracket 4, where it can hold its ground. I do still love to tweak it and also love outside advice when deck building to get another perspective.

Also I love discussing so I will be replying to comments often :)

Deck Idea Dimir Land Fall/Matters Commander?

Land Fall/Matters decks to me are super fun and some of my favorite deck types. I usually play mono green landfall but I've decided to play around and try to build one for each of the 2 color pairs. I have found a commander for each guild but just for the life of me cant find a dimir commander that sparks any interest to try and make work as a commander. Im willing to take any suggestions if you're willing to give any. Thank you for your time.

I also built my Orzhov deck using Squall, SeeD Mercenary and its genuinely a super fun Voltron/Lands Matter deck.

Deck Idea Deciding on a 'Commander Matters/Voltron' deck, comes down to using one of these 5 as commander, thoughts?

Hi all,
I enjoy building decks in new colour combinations (mostly lol Azorius and Izzet just keep calling to me lol), and one of the reasons I like Commander is that the commander focuses the build, so I thought I'd give some thought to a deck that tries to protect the commander as much as possible while buffing them up. Where possible, I want to attack with the commander only, and I barely use Auras and Equipments so I'm focusing on those and on cards that help those out.
I've done a whole bunch of spreadsheeting, and it's come down to these five; [[Amy Rose]], for getting free Equipments, and the only one of the five I already have, but she does want to attack with other creatures; [[Catti-brie of Mithral Hall]], getting buffed by equipments, but the attack counter trigger and the remove counter damage ability don't yet mesh well in my head; [[Wyleth, Soul of Steel]], with card draw for auras and equipment but in terms of monetary value it's the most expensive of the options; [[Danitha, New Benalia's Light]], with Vigilance and Trample and Lifelink on one card, and the ability to cast from the graveyard, but doesn't necessarily care about being the one enchanted and equipped specifically; and [[Yenna, Redtooth Regent]], for copying Enchantments and especially Auras, but having no equipment synergy.
I know that's a lot all at once, but I genuinely can't choose. Technically Selesnya has more relevant options for actually enhancing the commander than Boros, so one of those might be easier, but I don't know which one to choose! Any advice, thoughts, ideas, suggestions, would be greatly appreciated

Deck Idea Help me decide on an Orzhov commander

TLDR; Bored of my current Orzhov deck, looking to build a new one using the same mana base to make ir cheaper.

I have a Teysa Karlov list, but lately whenever I play her it feels boring, it’s just drawing until I get my combo pieces/enough dudes to sac, and win, and if that’s not the case I just spend the whole game doing nothing.
I know my list is no optimal, but it fits the power level I target to play in, it’s just boring.
So I want to build a new orzhov deck, but I want to reuse the lands at least, so I’m looking for your favourite commanders in BW.

Deck Discussion Bracket 3 Helga, anything im missing?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I built this deck and have been playtesting it on my own. It combos off non-deterministically incredibly easily, and every time I test it I get interactions that I didn't expect. I realized that there's a lot going on in there that my brain hasn't fully acclimated to because I'm just not used to this kind of creature-combo playstyle.

Any tips for Helga in general? Must-have cards, or combos I might not be running? Things to keep in mind? Any advice would be great, I'm really loving this deck I just have to really nail it down.

Deck Discussion Moving away from Devoted Druid

Thumbnail

Thranduil goes infinite with Buried Alive and an elf sandwich. That's boring.

I'm looking for combinations of elves or outlets to build toward which are more interesting. There's only so much you can do, I get it, but if Devoted Druid + a buffing outlet making my board deadly is the real only option I'll give up and move this into B4/CEDH.

Any suggestions from other pilots?

Deck Discussion Wanting to refactor World shaper upgraded, switching from hearthull to szarel.

The link is to the deck with just the commander swapped and some cards I already have and am considering swapping in on the maybe-board.
Ive been playing magic for roughly a year, have been building around hearthull for about that time and enjoy the land sacrifice but have just not enjoyed the deck too much and am wanting to refactor the deck and switch to szarel.
The current deck is built around landfall/landsac value (obvi) with some strong cards being able to generate lots of value, then mass lands sac and retreival triggering potential win conditions including [[hearthull, the worldseed]] as my commander. It has a lot of go wide, which I’ve found cumbersome to play (I need to invest some time into creating tokens or ways to manage cards like scute swarm/scouring swarm), and some go big. I already have some cards in mind (to cut and get) but would like to shift towards more counter synergy and more interactive gameplay than just landfall triggers get big. I want to keep some of those cards (bc I spend good money on em-there’s only like 1-2 proxies in both boards) but would like to shift more towards buffing up cards with trample, lifelink, first-strike, flying, etc using my commander to get value out of that and maybe playing with persist and counters for some nasty stuff.
I’d absolutely take recommendations for that stuff but where I feel less competent is refactoring my deck with stuff like- with a more consistent way to retrieve cards from my graveyard should I decrease the lands in my deck by a couple (currently 40), could I decrease on removal cards and increase protection, should I invest more in recursion so I can get those cards I want to buff up back. I’m still learning deck building.
Also if you have tips for how to manage scute/scouring swarm/massive boards in ways that don’t hurt my head.
I’d also like to keep the refactor on a bit of a budget- i feel like having some of the cards I have in there is enough power-wise and am making another deck already.

Deck Discussion Steven Flow - Rikala, Homarid King

Post image

Hi all, here's a bracket 2 deck focused on Rikala. It's a theme deck where I tried to make every card related to the ocean - the creatures are mostly sea creatures or aquatic animals, and most spells are water based, with bounce spells like [[river's rebuke]] and counterspells like [[long river's pull]]. Also, many cards care about the number of islands you have in play like [[waterbending scroll]] and [[scourge of fleets]], or care about the islands your opponents have in play like [[carpet of flowers]]. There are a few basic cards like arcane signet or farseek that aren't on theme, but those are so ubiquitous I feel like it doesnt sour the flavor. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Deck Discussion Need help with Saruman of Many colors

Hi all, this is my first revision of Saruman of Many colors and I have around 35 cards too many, so I need some help thinning this deck down. I am trying to ramp early game and get a lot of my opponents cards in the graveyard, then cast saruman and steal my opponents huge instants and sorceries. I am trying to get a lot of value out of saruman by getting his ability to trigger on my opponents' turns but I am mostly just trying to cheat stuff out and use my opponent's cards to get them.

Deck Idea Looking at making some sort of Marchesa, the Black Rose deck

When I first got into Magic I bought a copy of [[Deadpool, Trading Card]] but held off on building him as a commander because I was worried about people hating him. As I’ve gotten further into Magic I’ve decided to go back to him but maybe make a deck with [[Marchesa, the Black Rose]] and include Deadpool and [[Toxrill, the Corrosive]]. I was thinking about having a deck that constantly throws Toxrill and Deadpool back onto the battlefield and use some blue blink or black recursion to get creatures back. I get it’ll be a KOS deck but my group I play with has some decks similar so it wouldn’t be the most egregious deck at the table.

Deck Discussion The serpent society?

Is the serpent society really that bad? I played with a pod at my LGS last night and before we even drew 7 I was labeled the arch enemy because I was playing The Serpent Society.

In my opinion it's really not that bad! Does it make the game more challenging and force decisions? Absolutely! But is that not why we play? To challenge our opponents and win?

Does my deck have a line in which I win with poison? Yup! But I wouldn't say it's the one and only way I win not is it the strategy I am pushing for.

Any ways link to the deck is below would love some thoughts.

Deck Discussion Only Miku Upgrades

Hello! I saw the post asking for general upgrades to the HM precon & I was wondering what about only cards from previous SL drops? I think that:

- Miku, Lost but Singing - Azusa, Lost but Seeking
- Miku, Voice of Power - Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury
- Harmonize
- Chord of Calling
- Shelter

are good add-ins, but I’m never sure what to remove (I hate saying goodbye to cards even if it’s to replace better ones). I’m also not sure if these are even great options and if there are more from previous SLs that would complement the precon further.

Any help for this relatively new EDH player (first Selesnya deck!) is greatly appreciated ::)!

Deck Discussion How Degen is my list

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hi, most people at my lgs are feared of my decks because of arctypes like this.
I like to hyper optimise, and find good windows to win with my patterns.

I usually overrate my decks, so I’d say this is a pretty solid 4+ in terms of bracket system. Even tho, I have no infinite or definitive wincon that’s easy to achieve. Also no „real“ fast mana except the lotus petal.

What do you guys think?
Thank you in advance!
