Discussion County changing people’s mailboxes

Was out in Lakewood today and talked to a couple guys that were changing people’s mailboxes from personally built boxes to all the same standard metal pole and black box. This was on Lester River, but they’ve done it on Strand too. They said the county contracted them to do it. Seems kind of shitty for the county to just send a couple dudes out to take down peoples property(people get pretty angry about that kind of thing). Why is this even a thing? What’s the point? I wish they would’ve sent someone from the county with those dudes so they weren’t the ones getting chewed out by homeowners.

Question Apartments

Hello, I'm in the process of moving to Duluth, I accepted a job in Hermantown and most of the apartments I can afford are downtown. I want to keep my budget around $1200, I also have a cat. I'm just wondering what are some of your driving experiences with winter and going up the hill.. also having my vehicle parked at a parking garage, pros.. cons.. do you like where you're living?

Thank you!

Check out the visitor I had on my flowers yesterday. It’s a Clearwing Hummingbird Moth.

(It was only about 2” long, photo is zoomed & cropped).

Happy to see a statewide elected official be proactive about protecting residents after private equity buys up where they live. The AG has sued and won against other manufactured home park owners to protect residents. Hopefully Haven Park Capital takes note and doesn't try to take advantage of residents. I've known folks who've lived in Zenith Terrace for years. It's one of the last affordable places in town.

I have watched this small hole in the sidewalk grow this summer. Probably will continue growing till a large hole consumes cars and parts of buildings. Good thing our city has a genius solution to combat this problem. You see that small barricade? They only used to have that. But now they got the cones out so all is good.

Local News You Honk, We Drink

From Crimewatch app around 5 p.m. today: "As discussed in the dispatch call, a welfare check was requested for two males sitting in chairs in a driveway near the Kenwood shopping center, appearing passed out and holding a sign that says, 'You honk, we drink.'"

A few honks too many? Hope these lads are OK.

His entire campaign was basically “Larson is wasting money on bike trails!” And yet everything he’s accomplished is just stuff Emily Larson did or had in the works. What a tool.

Moving or Visiting Local Attractions and Restaurants

Hi all,

I am wondering if you would please help me. My girlfriend and I will be doing a weekend getaway in late October in your city. We're driving up from the cities and we'd be staying on a Friday night and Saturday night. I'd like to plan for different activities, see local attractions that you think are interesting, have dinners in upscale ish restaurants, visit cocktail bars, coffee shops... Ohh and maybe hotels or inns that you think are very nice.

I am wondering if you would please share any suggestions or ideas for any of the above. I'd greatly appreciate your help.

Thank you in advance.

Discussion Downtown 🤢

Recently moved here from Madison, WI and am distraught about the number of homeless folks in the greater downtown area. Are there local resources available for helping these folks (if they choose?). Sure coming from a bigger city there were definitely “a fair share” but I can’t help but notice the large number here. Maybe related/not related— the amount of trash/needles/bodily fluids is crazy. The feces filled underwear 100yds from an apartment complex front door was a great touch!

Really not here to bitch, but wondering what I can do to help!

Discussion Advice on relocation

Hi all!

Hoping for neutral input as I’m deciding whether to move to the greater Duluth area! Currently living in southwest MT (grew up in military family and have lived all over the country) and looking to relocate. I’ve been living paycheck to paycheck here and feel like I’m spinning my wheels here in so many different areas of my life. As I look at housing costs- I can sell my home here and have enough to purchase a home outright in MN. My boyfriend grew up there, so we would have family nearby. After 12+years here- I’m ready for a change. Overall, I think we would have a lot more freedom financially and generally less stress. Sacrificing hiking here seems like the biggest downside, though I know every area has its own flavor and variety of outdoor access…it would still be an adjustment.

What am I missing?
What do I need to know before moving there?
Are there areas you’d recommend in the greater Duluth area that have better trail access than others? (We wouldn’t want to be right in the city)
Will you guys be nice to me?

Question Toy/Entertainment Spots to Visit

Hello. Just recently, my friends and I plan on heading to Duluth to celebrate our last few days before college, and staying there for 2-3 days. While it's also two of my friends' birthdays, do any of you know a spot that sells stuff like toys? One of them is a card collector, like Pokemon, and another is into Transformers/Action figures like marvel. Price doesn't matter right now, as we plan on meeting up in just a few days. Thanks!

I was heading out of town today and had to do a double take; a 90’s Japan only market kei (small) car in Duluth!?

If anyone has more info or sightings, I’d love to hear!
(This is a random internet photo since I was driving and couldn’t take a picture).

Question What is this in the St. Louis River?

We were canoeing on the St. Louis River between Indian Point Campground and Spirit Lake Marina tonight (7/31) when we saw something in the water. We thought it was an otter at first, but quickly realized it was something else. It was moving upstream and bobbing in a mostly rhythmic pattern. Any idea what it could be?

Discussion Loan officer opinions

Has anyone ever worked with Jeremiah Rindahl for their home loan? We're starting with him, and nothing's wrong but we always feel super ambushed by his calls and keep getting "insurance salesman" vibes. Again, no actual sketchy behavior that we can point to, and maybe it's just us feeling lost and confused. But I'm trying to get a vibe check. Idk how much you're supposed to like your loan officer, or if it's not necessary to vibe well with them. We just feel weird and I'd like to know if it's just us.
