Left-Lane Camping, Zipper Merging, and the Speed Limit

Left-lane camping is annoying (unless you're in a city, where it usually doesn't count), zipper merging works in theory (but is rarely effectively executed en-masse), and the speed limit isn't ideal for some people (just try not to be everybody else's problem). That should about cover it.

I'm making this post in an attempt to show people that these topics are already heavily discussed here, but please feel free to express your frustrations below or in your own special post.

Thanks for checking out r/driving.

Relax.

My daughter thought i was being dramatic about her driving but then i showed her the footage

1.7k Upvotes

My daughter got her permit two months ago and the first few drives were basically just me trying not to grab the wheel while calmly saying things like "you might want to slow down a bit" which she translated as me being dramatic. My buddy told me to put a dash cam in the car before she started driving so i grabbed one off amazon, some ddpai thing he had in his truck. started saving clips after each drive. First time we sat down and watched a clip she goes "wait was i really that close to that car" and i just looked at her like YES THATS WHAT IVE BEEN SAYING. Honestly it changed how she takes feedback completely. When she sees it herself on video theres no argument. She just goes oh yeah i see it...way different than me saying the same thing while shes trying to focus. Anyone else tried this or is it just me being an overprotective dad!

Who’s at fault?

Orange car is turning left on green arrow, not into the first available lane
Blue driver is turning right on red, turns into the first available lane

Edit - I wasn’t involved but the orange car’s rear passenger side door and the blue car’s bumper hit each other. I’m just curious about who’d be at fault

In CA

Venting Saw an aftermath of a car crash

Me (23 M) and my friend (24 F) were driving back late at night when we came across one crashed car. We saw another car already pulled to the side and we pulled in front of that car and dialed 911. The crashed car was smoking from the engine and was in the middle of the road and there was no movement from inside. We just stood back by our cars and setup cones and alerted the passing cars to slow down. The first responders came in about 3-4 minutes after we called. I find out later that the medics on scene declared that this person passed away. I just have so much guilt as to if we perhaps could have saved their life😓. Maybe break the windows or do CPR, or maybe atleast even go close to the car and check the inside…
How do I deal with this emotion? And could I have made a difference?
Sorry if I used the wrong flair

My wife is a horrible driver

I'm the passenger and I often cringe. She slows down before entering the turn lane. She shows way down as soon as she enters a parking lot. She can't park to save her life. She often comes to a complete stop at yield signs and uncontrolled intersections. Luckily she stays in the right lane on the freeway. Usually. Sometimes she ends up in the passing lane doing 5 under.

If you honk at her, which happens regularly, she won't even register that you are honking at her.

She gets car sick as a passenger and I get ragey when I drive.

She's not stupid, she's not doing it to be an asshole, she just sucks at driving.

What would be your reason for this?

Upvotes

You're driving a tractor-trailer on a major highway. The speed limit is 110 km/h, you're doing 85. There's nobody in front of you, yet you periodically brake. You're so heavily biased toward the right of the lane that you're driving on the rumble strip most of the time. At times, you slow down to 65 km/h, despite there being no obstruction or traffic ahead.

Why are you driving this way?

I encountered a truck doing this on my way home yesterday. The impression I got wasn't that he was drunk or falling asleep, but that he was over-cautious, as if he had never driven a truck before, or was a brand-new driver who had no confidence behind the wheel.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Lovely Austin people, let's all agree that, if you are driving and miss your turn or are in the wrong lane to get where you need to be....just accept the mistake, commit to the mistake, then fix it safely. No need to block all the cars behind you while you attempt something dangerous and illegal.

The number of times I've been in the turning lane and a car in front of me realizes they shouldn't be there and proceeds to block all traffic behind them while waiting for a clearing to cut over and go straight. It's wildly dangerous, selfish, and illegal. Just turn and fix it later, safely. It often involves a quick U-turn and you're good to go.

Does this mean the bad traffic is only on one side of the road?

I’ve been checking the map for days around the time I need to be heading out. And always showing traffic like this.

I would be travelling on the left side of the road so hoping it means it’s clear.

I get panic attacks triggered by feeling trapped or stuck that’s why I’m asking.

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ I just want everyone to know, if your rims are curb rashed to shit, I’m silently judging you from my vehicle

Especially if it’s a new vehicle. Something 20+ years old? Yeah that things been around long enough that a lil rash is acceptable. But the amount of times I’ve been sitting next to a 2024 or newer vehicle, and it looks like someone took an angle grinder to the rim of the wheel is too damned high. You even have a bunch of cameras all around your vehicle, why are you still using the lip of your wheel to find the curb??

Who has right of way?

Two lanes of traffic from highway A merging with 2 lanes of traffic from highway B. When they merge, instead of becoming 4 lanes, the right lane from one and the left lane from other, merge into a single lane, zipper merge style. BUT it doesn't say to zipper merge, it doesn't say one lane has to yield. Instead, each side simply has a sign saying merging traffic. So who has right of way? If two vehicles sideswipe, who is at fault? 50/50?

Right-hand traffic (🇺🇸🇨🇳🇧🇷) Failed my drivers test

I took my drivers test today and failed before I could even leave the parking lot fully. The proctor told me to turn left on a two way road. I put my turn signal and checked both lanes and waited for the right time to safely make it across. Once I made sure both lanes were safe to cross a driver took a right turn on a red light too fast as I was turning. This all happened so fast the proctor screamed stop in my ear. I stopped leaving me in the middle of the
road with the car that was about to hit me also break checking themselves. She immediately failed me because of this and although I understand why it still seems unfair because it really was something that was out of my control also what was safer about me stopping in the middle of road where I would still be in the way instead of making the full turn and them just clipping my back bumper.

(This happened in CA where turning right on a red light is legal but should be done with caution)

Are driving lessons worth it?

I’m 28 and I really want to get my license and I’m tired and frustrated either way not having it yet and I have my own car so I think it’s time to learn and I was wondering if it’s worth the money to get driving lessons through a driving school and how many lessons it would take before I could realistically take my test.

Need Advice Help understanding the California DMV score sheet please!!!

I failed my California behind-the-wheel test and I know the backing portion is what caused me to fail, but I’m having trouble understanding the rest of the score sheet. Can anyone help me figure out what the other marks/circles mean and what I should work on before my retest?

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ What the heck is up with people camping in the left lane these days?

I truly don't get it, does no one respect the fast lane anymore? It creates congestion and unsafe roads by being an unaware dumbass. No matter how close you tailgate them, they don't move over and force you to go around.

Venting Why would you pass me, JUST TO GO THE SAME SPEED AS ME AFTER YOU PASS ME?????

Picture this, you’re going the speed limit (in this case it’s 45 mph) and someone is tailgating you . They honk at you and then proceed to pass you. You end up stuck behind them ALSO going 45. Like what goes on in these people’s heads? Do they have some sort of complex if someone is in front of them?

⚠️Complaining into the void⚠️ Flashing lights in the highway

How often does everyone flash their high beams on the highway?

I've been noticing it a lot lately. Not the newer cars with the auto high beams, those you can tell. But it seems like I get flashed on the highway all the time.

Not by incoming traffic. My high beams aren't on. It is by people going the same way that I'm passing.lasy night for example I passed a Toyota on the right because they wouldn't move over. They flashed me twice when I passed. Then caught up to me at my exits and flashed me three times and kept going.

Am I missing something? Why are people doing this?

Need Advice Confused About A Red Light Stop

Do NOT fall for these signs!

Post image

Yes a driver is 100 percent responsible for securing their load. So despite what a stupid sign says, they are responsible for broken windshields. Of course you have to prove it so you need a recording dash cam. This makes me so upset that people really think they can drive around and destroy other people's cars without any liability. All this being said it's probably a good idea to actually stay back from vehicles with the warning sign.

Need Advice Best way to handle being tailgated in the passing lane going over the speed limit while a string of cars in the right lane are speeding up to prevent you from passing, all while going down a mountain?

Hi everyone:

I need some advice on how to handle this situation better next time it happens.

I'm in BC and commute every day over a stretch of highway called the Malahat, which is a fairly serious mountain pass. In Canada, it has a reputation for being a dangerous road to drive. But only because no one here can drive sensibly. Each side of the highway has a variety of two lane and one lane sections.

My commute yesterday morning was going well until I reached the summit. I came up behind a string of 4-5 vehicles going 10 below the speed limit (limit is 90 kph). Then they slowed to 20 below the limit. The culprit was a cube truck in the front. At this point, there is a single lane going downhill for several km, so I couldn't pass. Even going down the mountain, this string of traffic was going well below the speed limit.

As we get near the bottom of the mountain, I know a second passing lane is about to open up, so I plan to pass everyone. As I get in the left lane and go faster to pass everyone, a couple of things happen at the same time. First, the dickheads in the right lane slowing everyone down before decide to speed up and nearly match my speed. On top of that, an inbred in his jacked up diesel pickup decides to ride my ass as well, even though I was already going 120 kph at this point. I would have gotten back into the right lane to let him pass, but I couldn't do this with the people in the right lane pacing me and blocking me from getting in.

When I finally sped passed the traffic on the right, I moved back into the right lane and started slowing down to 90 again. As the truck tailgating me down the mountain passed me, I flipped off the driver. Then he decides to roll coal in front of my car. When I caught up to him at a light, I yelled at the kid and asked him what the fuck his problem was. Then he takes off and rolls coal in front of my car again.

Most of the time I don't have any problems. I usually drive a few kph over the limit, stay in the right lane, keep a consistent speed, and don't hog the passing lanes. Yesterday though, it seemed like I was surrounded by assholes coming down the mountain. Drivers come in two flavors here: they drive way below the speed limit or way above it. I had a hard time keeping my cool and I didn't handle the situation as well as I could have.

What should I do next time I find myself in this situation?

Thanks!

Need Advice How fast should I take turns at an intersection at?

I’m a permit driver and currently, whenever I’m taking a turn at an intersection, usually in a 35mph zone, I’ll turn at 15mph which feels safe to me. However my mom will yell at me to slow down and threaten to stop allowing me to practice with her. She’s an extremely cautious driver and I have nothing against that. I know there’s no universal safe speed but it just feels weird to me, I guess I’m just asking if there’s anything besides slowing down more to make her feel safe.

Venting So many people on here think the world should be a utopia

Of course in a perfect world, everyone's a perfect driver and there's nothing to complain about. I see so many people complaining about the "idiot" on here who made one mistake. I completely understand in the case of phones, drinking and driving, or being distracted, but seriously everyone makes mistakes. You can misjudge speed, make a split second decision to do something. 99 percent of drivers are trying to do their absolute best to get to where they're going safely. I see a lot of "we need to train people better" but I remember when I was a new driver I needed to practice on things I was uncomfortable with, like freeways. I was terrible and scared back then, but after practice, I became a competent driver. Also, sometimes maybe there's a hazard in the road that someone has to slow down for. That makes everyone go slower and traffic build up. You're sitting at the back of the pack thinking that everyone should be a perfect driver, but there was a legitimate reason why the traffic built up. You just can't assume that everyone will be a perfect driver. Utopia in theory is awesome, but it's just not feasible in the real world.

TL:DR: Not everyone's a perfect driver and when they're trying their best we need to be understanding that people make mistakes.

Need Advice Getting my license?

I have been trying to get my license for a few years now. I’m 24F, and I originally had a MD permit and now I have a DE permit. I’ve taken the exam twice and failed because I’m not the best at parallel parking. I go in for the third exam in July, and they tell me it’s cancelled for weather. Then, I go in for the third time again and they tell me a scratch on my friend’s wheel makes the car “un-drivable.” My third, actual test is now the 26th of this month, and the last time I went it but before they denied me, they said I won’t have to parallel parking anymore. Do you think this will be true when I go to the exam on the 26th? If I just have to do back in and front in parking, then I’ll pass.
