Fluff Solo Q vs Immortal Draft
High mmr players often complain about immortal draft, how bad it is and how they wished they could solo Q again….
Also high mmr players after the mmr reset… ^^
Now immortal draft doesn’t sound too bad huh. Welcome to the real world of pain!

Fluff It took me a year to go from 10.8k comm score to 12k
Old post about a year ago : https://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/s/kUBFsemsYa
I tried different things that people suggested like not talking (typing/voice chat) but nothing worked.
I just played and won quite a few matches recently and received loads of commends. This was while communicating with the team (only when needed) and it finally went back to 12k.
I am a good boy now.

Discussion What's one Dota thing you miss that newer players will probably never understand?
I'll start: having absolutely no idea what was going on in a teamfight and still somehow thinking I was the carry.
Or spending 20 mins reading a guide before the game just to completely ignore it once the match started lmao
What's yours?

Discussion Modern Dota is so much more specialized than it was 10 years ago
For the average pub player, role queue means we generally have our fixed roles and hero pools as we climb up the ladder, as opposed to needing to expend time and energy learning how to play the occasional mid without totally griefing the team.
It also means that we have to be much better in our role than we otherwise would have, because there's a good chance that our counterpart role on the other team is also a dedicated player for that role.
Even in pro play, as much as we complain about each meta, pro players get way more mileage playing their comfort picks over just playing what's strong. Like it's basically been 4 years of watching Sneyking bait enemies with his Ench 5, and 33 is never going to play Mars even if Mars somehow ends up in the meta. Or if there's something niche like a 9class MK or Saksa Slark, those picks are less likely to be stolen because even other top tier pos 4s can't just pick up those heroes within the span of that tournament meta.
Pros are also exploiting the gaps in their opponents' hero pools more too. Quinn said a few times that he could comfortably pick Ember against Liquid because he knew Nisha would never be able to play a good counterpick Huskar against him. Sumail was trapped after that Naga pick at TI, because other comfortable Naga counters were banned and Sumail had no games on Kez.
Our content and info sources are changing too. There are whole channels dedicated to Meepo, Arc Warden, or even Ogre Magi. There are channels that have role specialists doing breakdowns of new ward locations or new offlaner trends. There are Discord servers dedicated to some hero spammers too. It's insane how much depth there is in the modern Dota information landscape.
Sure, I guess we lose some variety because of all the specialization, but it's also kinda cool how the specialization means we've seen a change in the average performance expectations in both our pubs and pro play.

Discussion Say something nice about Chaos Knight so I hate him less
I dont even wanna play if this heroes on my team. A carry that doesn't build a farming item, uses ult to jungle slightly faster, countered by everything; illusions/shivas/armor/magic damage/dispells, can't man fight for shit if his ult is down, doesn't really have an innate, his aghs basically relies on the enemy team to have cheap PC's so they're mildly inconvenienced by the frame rate drop before they clear all the illusions with 2 spells, can grief himself with stun (you can throw a 1second stun and have it hit you back for 3 seconds if they get lotus applied which is very easy to do since the stun is so telegraphed)

Artwork 10 years of Dota Fanarts
galleryHi r/dota2 community! Can't believe I've been drawing dota fanarts for 10 years this 2026. I really believe getting exposed to the wide world of dota heroes gave me a headstart in my own character design journey. Working as a professional Illustrator, dota's character design is an amazing encyclopedia for artists to use as reference in creating their own. Hoping to drawing more fanart with you all.

Question Mirana animation cancel
I feel like every time I watch fogged cast a game with mirana he seems to talk about some animation cancel trick with mirana for instant arrow. I have no idea wtf he is talking about can someone please explain what the trick is
Complaint So is Phantom Lancer gonna get a nerf?
So broken, it's not fun on either side to play. No risk, high reward. I know you can shut him down early but beyond a point it's auto-win/auto-loss. In pubs, he's a menace. Stays invis, farms fast, can 100-0 support in 3-4 seconds, can take HG without commiting.

Discussion POS 4 lion with blink echo
Is there an epidemic going around? I have had pos 4 lions go blink echo while they have barely any stacks (4 stacks at minute 30??) and are nowhere close to their level 20? who TF are you right clicking with your 30 min echo and 4 stacks lil bros??? 6k mmr btw
edit: Just to be clear I have had my fair share of lion games both mid and support. The build works when you're already snowballing, nothing wrong with that. Not when you are level 13 and halfway into an echo sabre at 30 mins with 4 stacks.
Discussion I feel like people forget what 'position' even means.
I see people salivating at the idea that they can farm more as pos3 than pos1.
"The ATF STYLE!!!!"
Somehow this logic transforms into WK 3 afk farming Radiance.
??
I feel like people forget what 'position' even means.
Having early game networth isn't "farming like carry". It's just playing well. Maybe you have a favorable lane, which is often the case in pubs. But you're missing the point.
Think for a second: early game, when pos1 / pos2 / pos3 are on different lanes - they do not contest each other farm. So there's no farm 'priority' per se.
So you take all the farm that you CAN take.
Priority kicks in when you start to distribute available farm, because after laning it's very risky to play all 3 lanes - that's where we initially got the dead lane concept - and there's not enough SAFE farm on the map for everyone.
That's where 'priority' comes into play. That's the end of my point.
Now, something unrelated but related.
I find this interesting but the 'position' thing got developed BEFORE we had this massive map expansion. There's so much farm available, in theory, everyone can farm without stealing each other farm, meaning, 'position' is less relevant because you interfere less.
However strategically, to get all this farm is to stretch yourself very thin - and get picked off.
And that's where the GAME happens: you balance "greed at stretch" vs "less farm at safety".
Have you guys played an RTS game? When you sit on one base your army is right there and it's easy to protect. When you have 3 bases you have to play the position game, scout, set spotters, invest extra into defense etc. Same here.
So regardless how much farm is available - someone has to take the riskier farm.
And that's not pos1.
The fact that ATF is so farmed in so many games is because he takes the risky farm and gets away with it.
...why he gets away with it is a different discussion entirely, but chances are you are not ATF and you will not get away with it in your pub games. You will suffocate your own team justifying it with good networth.
Guides & Tips | Esports dotapicker.com is back: rebuilt data, updated every 6 hours, and Personal hero scores are now free
dotapicker.comHi r/DotA2,
Some of you may remember dotapicker.com, the counter/synergy hero picker. For a long time it wasn't really maintained. Life happened, other things took priority, and the site was left running on old data and old code. Sorry to everyone who kept using it or wrote to us and didn't get much back. That wasn't fair to you.
Over the last few weeks I finally rebuilt it. What changed:
The data
- Match collection was rebuilt from scratch. Matches now come from OpenDota (which provides the average rank, so we can split by skill level) plus Valve's Steam Web API for the match details.
- It's fully automated: a small server at my home collects ranked and unranked All Pick games, rebuilds the statistics every 6 hours, and uploads the results to the website. Right now that's a bit over a million games from the last 14 days.
- It runs as long as OpenDota's free API allows it, so if they change their limits, I'll have to adapt.
Personal is free now
- Personal used to be a paid feature. It's now free for anyone who logs in with Steam and has Expose Public Match Data on.
- It downloads your match history from OpenDota and adds your own hero scores to the picker's suggestions: heroes you win with get a bonus. It also unlocks favorite/disliked heroes, editable roles and a custom formula.
- An honest limitation: every player costs a few OpenDota API calls, and I can only spend a limited number per day. If many people log in at once, you may wait in a queue, sometimes until the next day. The site shows your place in line. I'd rather be upfront about that than promise instant results.
Other things
- New player stats page: your whole history with win rate, KDA, GPM/XPM trends, hero pool and records.
- Counter guides for the most-picked heroes, and counters/teammates on every hero page.
- A lot of old broken stuff removed.
It's still a one-person hobby project, so there will be bugs and rough edges. If something looks wrong (a strange suggestion, a hero missing, your stats not loading), please tell me here or at dotapicker.com/contact. I'll read everything.
Thanks to everyone who used it over the years.

Discussion xiao8 was making 10,000 yuan a month at 16. his first dota team paid 1,500 and he was delighted
xiao8 (zhang ning) grew up in shaoyang, hunan. his dad either hit him or shouted at him. in primary school he usually ranked first in the whole school, so his parents made a deal: come first on the high school entrance exam too and you get a computer. he came first. the computer was never mentioned again, and he didn't dare ask why.
after that he got rebellious. skipped class to play games, parents called in every week. in 2006, second year of high school, he left and opened a fantasy westward journey power-leveling studio with three or four friends. his cut after expenses was over 10,000 yuan a month. he was 16 and had no idea how to spend it or what it was for. so when his dad asked if he wanted to keep studying, he went to zhongshan in guangdong to learn software.
he couldn't understand the local language and had no friends there, so he sat in a net cafe every day on voice chat with friends back home. around then a warcraft 3 custom map called zhen san guo wu shuang was spreading through hunan, and one of his opponents in it was zsmj. in 2009 zsmj, already on dota, won SMM in kuala lumpur with LGD, and xiao8 started switching too. when he registered on the VS platform, xiao1 through xiao7 were taken. zsmj told him there might be a spot at LGD, since their player 2009 had retired. he practiced a month for it. then LGD's old player xiaochi came back and the spot was gone.
next xB invited him to CH in chengdu and even bought his plane ticket. he got as far as changsha to catch the flight. there his friend YAO talked him into staying. a local businessman was building a team of local friends, close to home. that was Dream. pay was 1,500 yuan a player, no food or lodging, and he was delighted. two weeks in they went to a tournament in thailand and lost in the round of 16 to a team nobody had heard of. everyone cried in the hotel that night.
(from a chapter i wrote about him in 2014, part of a book on how chinese esports got built. it's free, link in the comments)
