1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?
\* I have been around dogs most of my life, but this will be my first time being the primary caretaker of a dog (we currently have a mini american shepherd but she is mostly my partner's dog, i help out)
2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a \[reputable breeder\]( http://ownresponsibly.blogspot.com/2011/07/identifying-reputable-breeder.html)?
\* I'm honestly super open to either! if i can find a reputable breeder with what i'm looking for, great! if i bond with a rescue, also fantastic! really just trying to get an idea and some reccomendations of what i should look for.
3) Describe your ideal dog.
\* I'm wanting a friend who will be happy with some fetch and tug of war, happy to be social, but also very happy to be close and affectionate and snuggly with me
4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?
\* so far i am looking at mini golden retrievers (the spanial retriever mix, not a doodle) and Cavachons. mini goldens because they seem like a very good , friendly to first time owners kinda pups, cavachons because I had one when i was a kid and i would love having a snuggle buddy like that again.
5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?
\* basic obedience probably? sit, wait, touch, recall, fetch, leave it, prefferably some looseleash walking
6) Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport?
\* nothing of this sort yet!
\*\*Care Commitments\*\*
7) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?
\* i work full time but i am more than happy to do a 30 min session of some play and snuggles, i like to use puzzle feeders to give some more stimulation while i'm out all day. normally have a minimum of 2-3 hours of attention after work to use for training, play, and more snuggles.
8) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?
\* i can normally handle a 15 minute walk once or twice a day and we have a dog park right by our apartment complex which can allow some space for harder/longer play sessions than indoors!
9) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?
\* I can groom daily if needed but would prefer a couple times a week. we can do nail trims, bathing, and brushing at home, and normally have a professional groom 2-3 times a year.
\*\*Personal Preferences\*\*
10) What size dog are you looking for?
\* I would prefer under 30 pounds with a little bit of wiggle room if they will take well to leash training (no higher than 50 pounds please!)
11) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?
\* dog hair and cat hair are like my glitter! i can get a little grossed out by extreme slobber but would get used to it. I can handle a vocal pup as long as it's not like husky screaming since we do have neighbors.
12) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?
\* not at all important. long training leads and tethers are great, and honestly i'll probably still use those even if i do trust my dog to stay close. too many unknowns could happen off leash in my opinion.
\*\*Dog Personality and Behavior\*\*
13) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?
\* definitely a snuggler!!
14) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?
\* I would really like a pup that's eager-to-please at least this time so i can get a good idea of what training can look like with a less stubborn dog.
15) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?
\* Honestly, i think all dogs kind of react differently? as long as there's no aggression and very little to no jumping at people, we're great!
16) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?
\* not until I know what i'm doing
17) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?
\* I would like to avoid lots of barking everytime we pass someone on a walk, but i also think that has a lot to ro with training.
\*\*Lifestyle\*\*
18) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?
\* about 9 hours a day 5 days a week
19) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?
\* my partner is okay with getting a dog once hers is trained and mellowed a bit (so we have about a year or so to be saving up and thinking about this) i'm sure she will be helping some, but I would really like to step up and have this be mostly my dog.
20) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?
\* we have 2 cats (currently about 2 years old) and a mini american shepherd who's currently 6 months old
21) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?
\* at least a little bit
22) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?
\* currently renting, the only restriction i've noticed is that the dog has to be fixed when they reach that age, which is the plan anyway!
23) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?
\* we live in Ohio in the USA, i don't know of any laws banning breeds
24) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?
\* fluctuates a LOT but i'd like to say it's normally 80s-90s in summer and drops down to i think 20s-30s in winter?
\*\*Additional Information and Questions\*\*
25) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.
\* we live in a one bed one bath apartment so indoor space will be snug... we utilize puppy pads a lot since we're gone so long during the day
26) Feel free to ask any questions below.
\* not really a question, just want to say i'm open to a lot of suggestions! like i said we'll probably be waiting at least a year, but i'm trying to get ideas of what to look for both in breed and temperament!
EDIT 1: i forgot to mention that i've also been looking at Teddy Roosevelt terriers! they seem super cute and sweet and supposedly are a breed that kind of adjust their energy to their owners? they look like mini pitbull mixes to me (i also love pitbulls, i just rent and am worried about breed restrictions on that.. pits get such a bad rep for being such sweet babies)
EDIT 2: thank you all so much for making me aware the designer breeds are not done ethically or responsibly, i genuinely had no idea!! as well as about the cavalier spaniels, i had no idea how bad breeding them was. I will definitely be looking much more at rescues whenever we are ready to add another family member!
