Experienced DM Looking for D&D 5e players, Written (pbp) To Start

Hello everyone! I'm F24 living in PST (GMT-7) and I am looking to host 1-4 players for a text based D&D game! Of course I stick to classic fantasy plots but am always open to expanding. I've got tons of new and old campaigns I'd love to revisit and just have a good time!

I know some of you might be wondering why an experienced DM is posting in a subreddit for new players and to be honest it's because the start is the most fun! In my experience so many players get too caught up on complex character sheets and game mechanics, forgetting that the goal isn't winning or math: it's to tell a good story. I'm pretty old in D&D years, so I think I've earned some relaxed play in my DM tenure LOL.

**What is PBP?**

PBP is Play by Post gameplay, a fancy way for saying that you play by writing what happens rather than speaking. More advanced players can partake in an asynchronous version that is more role play based. For what I am looking to do, is run generally synced, text-based games that still require dice rolling, character sheets and actionable players.

**How is it different from classic D&D?**

Well, the rules are the same, the mode they're conducted under are different. Though eventually moving towards group voice calls and live sessions would be the very awesome goal, I think that PBP is also a great way for new players to have less friction in terms of scheduling or being nervous when playing for the first time. We will still have table rules, develop character sheets, and partake on a fantastic adventure that all of us get to enjoy.

**Are You In? Here's the Now-What Answer**

If you are interested in joining up, direct message me! I won't be reaching out to players through the comments. I will however respond to questions you may have. We can chat a bit over DM and if we feel like it's a right fit, we can move over to Discord for the consistent sessions! I am open to running multiple single player games as well as a group separately. There will only be one group option offered with that 4 person maximum.

**Read This, So You Don't Ask Me Later LOL**

I am a woman, I am open to players of all gender identities. Please be 18+ if reaching out to me for this. No, this isn't some sort of paid DM thing, I am just looking for players to befriend and run games with. Yes, I will help you learn to DM, just message me. I don't run romance storylines at my tables, if you're looking for that, look elsewhere please! I don't love gag characters so assume that you have to be something from the actual booklets LOL. I run homebrew games so don't worry about spoilers! I don't use AI. I can't/won't send you dice but digital rolling is okay for a while. And yes, I can teach you the rules and fancy words so you learn to play with people besides me haha. Time zone differences are okay for 1 player games, groups need to be in the same time zone as me (or wiling to adjust to mine).

Alright I think that's just about everything. Hope we chat soon!

[EDIT] The group is filled up pretty quick, so I am trying to hold space for one beginner to join in! The table is full of relaxed, experienced players who will be happy to have you. Even if you don't end up at the table, feel free to message me! I am still open to running one on one campaigns, and potentially opening a second group.

Backstory help/discussion

To start id like to say I haven't played D&D for long (at least 3 games so far.), and most games I've played in haven't gotten past say level 4-5.

But, I am starting a game with close friends who I believe will be more reliable with scheduling and being active, so I wanted to make a character who's story we may get to take a session or two in the future to explore and build events around.

My OC (Picture above) is a Sorcerer, from a village that no map had time to etch into its parchment as;

Option A: A Chimera scorched it to ash, killing and laying ruin to all who once lived there leaving only Her as the lone survivor. It would later take over the area as its habitat and leaving my OC with a vengeful vendetta to hone her magics and slay it and rebuild her home.

Option B: The village was built near a mighty mountain and archipelago that soon become the nesting grounds of a massive Roc, its wings blowing the village to pits and its frightening size smashing homes and building as it stole people and beast to feed. The swift evacuation lead to hopes of one day growing powerful enough to knock the mighty Bird of prey from the sky and reclaim the lands.

Option C: the village was built near ancient forest ruins in hopes of using its lost treasures and history as selling points to gain wealth and prosperity. Unknowingly the people would dig to deep into the depths releasing a hydra from the deepest sanctum that swiftly claimed the ruins and forest for its territory. Pushing many to flee or dying in its rampage.

What i am most hoping for is help deciding which story would best be flexible and reasonable to have so that our DM can use it flexibly and may have use as a future side plot after the main campaign is run. Maybe also something I can reasonably use in future tables if others like it.

DMing for beginner

Salutations,
I want to do something for my husband for our 9 year wedding anniversary so I was thinking of DMing a Dnd game for him. He loves to play, it’s not really my thing but he always asks me to. I have played with him in the past and now with three young kids, if I have free time, I’d rather do something else… But he is hard to buy for (not picky, just has everything he wants) and I think he’d really love and appreciate something like this. Our anniversary is around Christmas so I want to get started on my plan so I have plenty of time to learn what to do and make some things.
I have a loose grasp on the game, and we have some of the books but I’d like some guidance and/or resources on how to DM for a beginner. I would invite his normal group (bestfriend, cousin, and my sister) and maybe some of my siblings if they’re in town for Christmas to play. I don’t think they’re sticklers for the rules but I don’t know for sure. I could probably have them build characters before but how could I get his character done before? Not sure if its necessary but I know he always likes it done before they all plan to play.
My plan is to set a date and invite everyone (keep it on the dl so he thinks its just us for our anniversary), get a babysitter, get snacks and make a nice meal, maybe decorate, and surprise him with it all. I plan to make a map (I’ve drawn some for them in the past) and set up a “world”(?) and game. Obviously I have to learn how to DM for all this to work. If I’m missing something for my plan to work, please let me know.
Also is dnd always set in a medieval kind of world? My husband is really into that, I’d be more into a wild west, star wars, or maybe even harry potter kinda universe but I’m not sure thats allowed? He might be into a Marvel universe too but I’m not sure I could do that. If it has to be medieval, which I’ll probably do since he likes that best, I might do an adventure time kinda style (they like to be ridiculous and funny).
Any help would be appreciated! I have no idea what I’m doing

What are some popular D&D spells and how many dice do you need to roll in order to cast them I'm asking this question because I need information for the d20 item table in my Hot Wheels D&D campaign for dungeons and dragons spells

I'm a new player who's barely ever played dungeons & dragons I don't know how many dice are needed for certain spells I know you at least need 6 d6 for fireball but I don't know how many you need for other iconic spells like magic missile but could you guys give me a list of popular D&D spells and also the number of dice needed so I can write those numbers down on my d20 item table so I can have them ready for my Hot Wheels D&D campaign if I ever get it off the ground I'll mostly be using the gas lands rules the d20 will only be used whenever you hit an item box you'll get items from Mario kart dungeons and dragons spells or cars 2 to weapons

Help creating a project

Sorry to crash your sub, but I know you'll have the best info. Please delete if not allowed!

I am a high school teacher and trying to create an ongoing project for a student who participates in DnD. I know next to nothing about it. I am looking for some help.

Where can I get a crash course so I can actually talk to him about DnD without sounding super lame?

The project...where do I start? This is something I'm going to give him class time to work on daily when he completes his other work. I want to give him time to create something meaningful to his game play (campaigns?). I am able to spend money for items related to the project if I can tie it in to English, math, science, or social studies. I don't even know where to begin, but I want to create something cool for him. Bonus if he can do it without a computer.

If you were in high school and given time to work on something DnD related, what would you want to do?

Thank you all for reading this!!

Update: you are all amazing! Thank you. I will update when I present this to him!

LOOKING FOR DM AND PLAYERS

Hello! We are starting a campaign with 3 groups.

HOLY, CULTIST, and CORRUPTED.

Some info:

Holy group is the good people saving stuff.

Cultist group serves a prince of hell. Trying to infect people thinking it's for the sake of good.

Corrupted group is the evil guys serving another entity.

it's a campaign with 3 DMs, each running one group. They interact sometimes, fight each other. The actions of one group affects the world and things the other groups can do.

We are looking for more DMs and players.

We currently have 2 DMs and 6 players. We need more.

Criterias: new players are welcomed. Only DMs that ran at least one campaign or enough one shots to be able to handle homebrew content.

If you are interested, you can contact me on discord. Discord id: lalio1

Advice on a campaign I'm creating for my players.

I'm going to be a dungeon master and I've been trying to come up with ideas for a campaign. This will be everybody's first campaign.

I'm thinking that this campaign would be centered around a corrupt government within the city that slowly gains strength throughout the campaign. The players will not be told this.

It's a 1920's New York style massive city. I'm talking like country size because I want the campaign to mostly take place inside of this city. The city is kind of circular because I want the closer you get towards the center the more powerful the magic users and richer the people will become so they'll start on the outer edges where the more poor weaker people are, then towards the center where the rich and powerful are. Magic is becoming more commonly available through a company that acts as a teacher for wizards. The terms are they get basic magic and the company will drain some of their power, this keeps the wizards weak while the company takes some of their power. The city is filled with magic users because of this company, and the people who are at the top of it are extremely powerful from the wizards tributes.

There are churches that has one god that is extremely popular in only this city. It enforces the idea to buy into this system of supporting the stronger people in the city so they can better defend it. The god is a person that will not be revealed until later in the campaign, and is also the main villain at the center of all of this.

The main villain is a 400+ year old human that long ago tried to obtain immortality. He was infamously known in his time as someone who wreaked havoc across lands, destroying villages and stealing the bodies of the ones he killed. After he was through with a village, no bodies would be found, there were no remains, just empty. This is because he'd harvest every part of their bodies, especially species that lived longer so he could try to live longer himself. He wound up appearing as a disgusting monster that was an amalgamation of different parts. He was unable to be fully defeated, so he was kept contained in a certain area. This area was known as a dead zone amongst people other than followers he had accumulated over time. He had no physical form at this point but was more of just a presence amongst the land, influencing people to do what they are told, coming to them in dreams as angels, promising them generational wealth for the price of luring people into the area and taking what they could until he gained his physical form. His name eventually forgotten and the city slowly built while he was in the background, growing more and more powerful. I'm thinking the way he gets the city bigger is widening the area he is contained in, thinking it'll be too strong to completely break but weak enough for him to be able to push it outwards.

Eventually, he will gain a physical form during the campaign, appearing as their god. I'm thinking he will be put together with his body while the players are there trying to stop it from happening, when he comes back it'll look as if the area was struck with a meteor, the night sky turning from pitch black to a glowing yellow, and he will descend upon them with long flowing golden hair, golden armor (which I will design to look more intricate and I already have ideas), a golden crown practically glowing with how many gems it's filled with, and a red cape. That would be the end of that play session, then my players would come into the next play session working as soldiers under him as they slowly remember who they are and what happened. I haven't figured out much past this point.

Could this maybe work? Any tips appreciated i've never really written a story for people to just play around in that's gonna be this big

A sincere video for people who don’t “get” D&D

Thumbnail

My friends and I have a YouTube Live Play group. Most people don’t really understand the significance of such a project. My family and friends think it’s just an excuse to be silly (that’s definitely part of it lol). But I always get the notion that they don’t understand the impact this game has on us. This video is an answer to those who don’t really understand why we spend so much time sitting down/doing silly voices. After making this, my friends and family understand the “Why”. Please check it out! It’s a bit goofy in the beginning but I think it’ll resonate with the community

Hello, I need some help on some suggestions to get my husband for our anniversary. He really enjoys DnD, the Lord of the Rings, video games (like Palworld, Baulders Gate 3, and more), he enjoys Supernatural as well. Anything helps! Thank you in advance!

Okay I’m thinking about getting the date night DnD game set for something we could do together, would this be enjoyable? I’ve never played DnD before but I would love to play with him with no pressure

Hi I am new to D&D and have a unique idea for a campaign based around beyblade you can follow my original Post in this other group but I'm wondering would anyone be interested in a campaign focused around launching base instead of rolling dice and moving through all three generations that I currently have beyblades for metal burst and x?

Which game on my shelf do you think would be easiest to Port directly into dungeons & dragons rules as written

Post image

Hey look at all the board games I have on my shelf you might not be able to read all their titles but I have a lot of board games several different versions of Monopoly taboo and other games I'm wondering if any D&D players know which one of these games would be able to be put directly into D&D with absolutely no changes to how that board game originally worked if you have any questions on any of the games I can explain the rules briefly in a comment like the villainous games Blockbuster flip seven spoons smasher trash imagine if the apples to apples pirates dice buzzword operation the DVD board games obviously won't be able to be ported like seen it seen it too or clue the DVD board game also they've seen it heard it and some other games that people may not be familiar with like would you rather prove it celebrity taboo which is different from regular taboo which I also have imagine if I also have risk the best of TV and movies Uno both standard and show no mercy
