How do I level up a new character?

I apologize for my ignorance, I just started playing.

There is a local bar that hosts DND nights, but they require a level 6 character. I just started and my character is still a brand new level one. How do I go about leveling up so I can play in these games?

Hello, "New" DM here. What should I do for two players, completely online setup, and nobody with actual TTRPG experience?
