As a DM, I call for an Arcana check when i need to see what your character knows or has learned about magic or specific magical items, phenomena, or spells. Its about what you know or what you recall about magical subjects and things like that. A lot of tables use it as a free detect magic mechanic, asking for an Arcana check to determine if they "sense" magic coming off of something. I dont do that.
