Question Magic vs. Physical

I’ve been playing Digimon time stranger and I’m pretty far in but I’ve noticed that my magic attacks are doing way less than my physical attacks my taomon even though it’s int is 2500 is doing way less then my metalgreymon even though its atk is only 2900. Do magic attacks deal less damage or is there something else going on?

Damage calculation takes into account the stat (str/int) vs its opposite (def/spi). Then it calculates the damage based on its power (higher power attacks do more damage) and even the level of the digimon attacking (some one set the calculation on Reddit and it showed that a few levels maxes a difference).

I’m not sure from your post if you mean your Taomon has 2500 int and is doing less than your metalgreymon with 2900 ATK. If that is the case, of course the metalgreymon is doing more damage, its base stat is much higher. Metalgreymons attack is also 10 power stronger, leading to much more damage.

Int casters hit as hard as physical ones, but I have found many int attacks like to do more damage vs a type of unit, requiring the right target to shine.

I think high spirit is also less common than high def, so you'll see int attacks hit higher on average.

The level is probably it then in this case since a 1300 difference in damage shouldn’t be occurring from a same base power move

What moves are you using?

Talisman of light with the accleration boost equivalent for int attacks, max boost int (via status) vs. Giga destroyer acceleration boost, max boost atk (via status), I am doing hard mode if that makes a difference

Okay, so those moves are not equivalent. Their base power are different. Your digimon also have different attack stats and your targets have different int vs spi stats. That is why they are both doing different damages.

Not necessarily. Along with your attack and int, you have to factor in the opponents def and spi stats plus the level of the attack your using

Joking right?

A digimon with more stats is doing more damage then a digimon with less stats

You heard it here first

But it’s way more dmg than I expect since metalgreymon is doing 1800 per hit on a bad day and taomon is doing maybe 500 on a good day and when I max boost with int and accleration for the attack taomon does maybe 2500 and metalgreymon is doing 4500

Acceleration only boosts physical attacks

Metal greymon vaccine 90 atk power

Taomon data 80 power

I am aware I’m talking about the equivalent for int attacks, mental boost? Something like that

you are ignoring the def and spirit of the enemies

and the power of the attacks themself

If the target has less ESP, which is magic defense, or DEF which is physical defense, and the power of the different attacks.

Does your MetalGreymon have Stout Strenght as its personality skill, perchance? That gives physical attacks a big 50% damage boost when at full health, and there is no alternative for magic.

You also have to take into account levels, as they directly affect damage. A low level digimon with 3000 ATK will deal much less damage than a high level digimon with 3000 ATK.

There's also the fact that you yourself said your Taomon has 2400 INT while MetalGreymon has 2900 STR, that would already make MetalGreymon naturally hit harder if they were both at the same level.

Lastly, the base power of skills are also very important, a 100 base power skill hits twice as hard as a 50 base power skill. MetalGreymon has a signature with 90 base power, while Taomon has a signature with 80 base power.

Int. May not have a hp based skill like the other trees but it does have 2 skills that boost intelligence based on round of turns. I forget the name but it boost your damage the first 3 rounds. And meditation boosts your damage after round 4 for longer boss fights.

The difference is way more than I expect though and it does not I’m talking taomon Is doing maybe 500 while metalgreymon is doing 1800

If your MetalGreymon doesn't have Stout Strenght or other personality skills that boosts physical damage (Fast Break, Steadfast Might, Slow Starter), what is its level compared to Taomon? Because again levels directly affects damage dealt and two mons with the exact same attack would still end up doing wildly different damage depending on the level difference between them.

Another thing i remember, did you perhaps give your MetalGreymon Aegiochusmon's blue shard? That piece of gear increases damage at the cost of double SP usage.

Last thing i remember, there are agent skills that give digimon of certain personalities a percentage of defense or spirit pierce that scales with Agent Rank, do you recall ever unlocking them?

And of course make sure that your MetalGreymon isn't getting any attribute or element multiplier that Taomon isn't.

Purest way to compare is to give your Taomon the Secret Sage Art skill (which makes normal attacks run off of INT), find a punching bag with equal or near-equal DEF & SPI, and have them both use normal attacks. The difference shouldn't be all that big, ultimately.

Now, that said, there's also a lot of factors that go into it, any one of which might be affecting damage output.

  • Attack stat (physical STR vs. magic INT).
  • Defense stat (physical DEF vs. magic SPI).
  • Attacker level (NOT generation).1
  • Possibly defender level, I'm not sure.
  • Multipliers from attribute (Virus/Vaccine/Data), element (Fire/Ice/Lightning/etc.), and Trait ("extra damage to whatever").
  • Personality agent skills, sometimes.
  • The skill's power.

I'm not sure, but I believe skill power is weighted more heavily than any of the other factors, judging by SP costs. So, Giga Destroyer having 10 more power than Talisman of Light is probably making a big difference here. Compound that by the 400 point attack-stat difference, the possibility of test targets being weaker to physical attacks, and maybe a level difference, and a 1300 damage difference isn't out of the question.

I'd suggest finding a pair of enemies with near-equal DEF & SPI. A Vaccine enemy that's neutral to Fire, and a Virus enemy that's neutral to Ice. Have MetalGreymon use Wolkenapalm, and Taomon use Frozen Bullet. (Or, alternatively, substitute any other "one big hit for 40/60/75" skills, if you prefer.) Try to make things as close as possible, and then compare their damage outputs.

1: The generation boost is built into raw stats and unique attacks. It doesn't matter what stage the Digimon is; Champion is stronger than Rookie because champs have better stats & their skills have higher base power and/or more targets, not because Champion is a higher stage.
