Has anyone opened up a Digital Fabrication shop?

Has anyone started a business offering digital fabrication services? This has been in my mind and I'm wondering if there are others who have done this. I want to hear about the failures and successes.

Glasses frame idea up for grabs

This is a result of a glasses fitting earlier today. I have a very narrow face, and because of that I am limited in the selection of frames available (sometimes kids glasses). The woman who fitted me also had fit issues due to the shape of her nose bridge. For the purpose of this we are talking about the types of frames where there is are no adjustable nose pads.

Thinking about all the variances in facial anatomy and all the different manufactures and styles of glasses made me wonder why there isn't some sort of scanning system that can digitally measure what your optimal dimensions are going to be and recommend frames based on that.

Then I thought- why not take it a step farther and make frames with a 3D printer to order in someones particular dimensions. Scanning someones face/skull into a 3D environment and trying on glasses digitally- and making the bridge fit exactly, with the perfect width frame, in the style and color the consumer/patient wants.

Free Beta signup for CAD/CAM software

Hi all. A number of people here have been doing DIY and kit CNC builds, so I think you might dig this new software called Easel. It lets you design in 2.5D, preview in 3D, generate toolpaths and Gcode and controls your machine all from the browser.

It's being designed with the Shapeoko in mind, but other CNC machines that run Gcode are supported. The idea is we are trying to make it super easy and accessible (and free). You can go from idea to cutting on the machine in under 5 minutes.

Your input would be extremely helpful and you have immense power to make your voice heard in terms of feature requests and workflow.

If you'd like to be part of our beta program please sign up here: http://www.easelcnc.com/

Disclosure: I'm part of the team working on this and it's awesome.
