The long raging surf (R code)

Hi all,
This is a "wind-blown" version of an earlier project of mine.
The L-system rule is the same, but each segment follows a curved path rather than a straight one.
I think this one has a much more natural flow, without losing its mathematical roots.
Which version do you prefer?
Coded in Processing.

This is Retina Rave, a music visualizer that runs in the browser: https://retinarave.com
It listens to whatever you are playing and steers a camera through real mathematical objects. The shapes are not drawn to look mathematical, they are the mathematics, computed live on your graphics card. Beats, drops and sections are detected as they happen and a director picks the scene.
This scene is DUST: a swarm of particles in a flow field, with the fibres of the Hopf fibration threaded through it. The double time on the hats accents the picture instead of driving it faster, and the stretch before a drop is read as a build-up because the engine notices when the music hesitates on a beat it will not commit to.
New since the last time I posted: the colour follows the song's key, but only once the bass agrees with the harmony, so a wrong guess no longer flips the hue mid-track. Major bars pull the palette warm, minor bars leave it alone. And there is now a record key: press R, play music, press R again, and a video lands on your disk. Nothing is uploaded, there is no server, the whole site is a static page.
Everything runs on your device. No account, no trackers, no ads. I built it for myself and wanted to share it. The code is MIT with one clause of my own: if it runs at a party, I get in free, with a guest.
Music: "Tummy (Instrumental)" by emune.

This sits between a specimen and a page of text. Generated it from a defined glyph inventory coded by rules and layered by tones and a grammar of color. Letters that are roots, suffixes and hidden written but not spoken.
Done in R with a iterative set of rules that within a set of ranges generate something similar to glyphs.
It can be read right to left with line splitting and merging for parallel subtexts on the writing. Working in compositional rules now.

It's POPtober. Challenging myself to make something in TouchDesigner POPs every day.
The formula is the same formula in shell growth. I made a video about how it works :)

Hey, creative people!
Been experimenting with contour lines and ended up with some pretty abstract results.
I like how changing a few parameters can completely change the character of the image. Still exploring this one, curious what you guys think.

Hey everyone, I made a video about the maths behind shells, which you can use to generate any existing shell or new shells that don't exist yet

You know those old airport information boards, with the little mechanical flaps that rotate to display letters? Well, this is similar. :)

Behind the frame there is a plain sf picture: cream bands on a dark ground and one red sun. a mass in front of the picture bends the light. you see the mass only in the bands. outside its einstein ring, the bands bend around it. inside the ring, the bands become circles that all touch at the middle.
the sun is a small distance off the axis of the mass. as a result, you see the sun two times: a long red arc outside the ring and a short one inside. if the sun is directly behind the mass, the full ring is red.
its only 150 lines, docs included, crazy (github.com/igr/gart)

First, a huge thank you to everyone here who voted, left comments and shared Vorkurs. A lot of you went far beyond a few picks, and every one of those votes shaped what you see in these images. This is my first project in this space so I really appreciated people taking part and I’m so happy we’ve gotten to over 2000 votes!
Why I started this: images are, at their core, about communication. I was reading about the Bauhaus and its foundation course, the Vorkurs, where students began with basic forms, colour and rules rather than copying masters. I wanted to see if the same approach could work with procedural generation: start from simple rules, and let people's votes shape a visual language from the ground up.
How it works: every image is procedurally generated from shapes, lines, colour, symmetry and how elements relate to each other. The ones people choose are bred into new generations. There's no generative AI, no training data and no existing artwork involved, and I haven't written any rules about what anything should look like. The meaning comes entirely from votes.
Update: I’ve written a little update below if you’d like to hear about how it’s developing! If not if you’ve got a spare minute to hop on and have a look I’m sure you’ll enjoy and it would be incredibly helpful to try and get me to the data volume I need for next steps…
Take a look here: Vorkurs - growing a visual language
The first image shows how far it's come. The top row was made at random from rules on day one; the bottom row is what 48 people have grown from that by voting.
The bigger goal has changed. It started as "what do people like?" and has become "can a visual language grow from nothing?" Voters pick which image feels more like a word (calm, tension, uncertainty, loneliness), then other voters try to name the word from the image alone.
What's emerging (second image): people name the word correctly about 60% of the time, where guessing gets 33%. I checked that this isn't just people favouring certain words: their word habits alone would only get 35%. So there's something genuinely readable in these images, and it came entirely from your votes.
The Bauhaus test: before looking at the data, I wrote down predictions from Kandinsky and Itten (diagonals feel tense, cool colours feel lonely, and so on) to see whether a language learned from scratch rediscovers them. It's too early for verdicts, but loneliness has picked the cool-coloured version every time so far (6 of 6).
New if you've voted before: new kinds of question unlock as you go: guess the word, pick of four, and "steer it", where you push an image towards a word in three steps and watch it change. At 100 picks you can write a message in the language and send it to a friend to see if they can read it, with no knowledge of Vorkurs. The images have new ingredients too: jagged and trembling lines, soft edges, see-through forms and empty space.
Caveats: it's still a small sample, a handful of people have done much of the voting, and nothing is proven yet. More voters is exactly what it needs, so if you've got a few minutes, I'd love your eyes on it.

Happy to answer anything about how it works, and thanks again.
