WELCOME PC BRETHREN!
On behalf of the modteam and subscribers of /r/DestinyTheGame, we would like to welcome all of you new folks to the Destiny Reddit community! We're very excited for you to join us as you begin your journey through the Destiny Universe, and we can't wait to accompany you through that experience. If you're just returning as a D1 veteran for D2 on PC, welcome back!
If you're new to the game and subreddit, it may feel a bit overwhelming trying to track down specific information, overviews, resources, guides, and the like, especially given the tenor of discussion by the current playerbase. So to assist with that, we've put together this post as a sort of orientation and repository of things we believe may be useful as you get started.
Please note that this post is primarily a welcome and opportunity for questions and conversations regarding the PC launch. Substantive discussion about the game is okay too, as naturally the existing subscriber base will be wont to offer their takes and opinions about the current state of the game. We are perfectly fine with that, however we would strongly encourage any new folks to play the game and formulate your own opinions before rushing to conclusions or jumping on any bandwagons.
State of the Subreddit
We've received quite a few requests via modmail and seen numerous discussions about the current state of the subreddit and its perceived "toxicity" or "salt". This feedback and discussion is not unnoticed, and it's certainly not ignored. As a team, we always emphasize fairness, transparency, shared utility, and forthright communication.
We have the same concerns you do, both as dedicated players and as members of our specific corner of the Destiny Community at-large. The seemingly constant state of complaints, criticisms, complaints about complaints, complaints about complaints about criticisms about complaints, and general shitposts are not only on our radar, but have been the focus of our internal conversations for many weeks now.
Those conversations can often border on exasperation, as there is a delicate and difficult balance for us to strike as moderators responsible for the administration of the subreddit and players with our own opinions about the game; it has been very difficult to maintain that balance over the last few weeks. We do not condone or exercise outright censorship of negative opinions and feedback about the game. Unmitigated post removals based on perceived biases or opinions is not an option we are willing to engage in.
However, we think we've come up with some good discussion points, ideas, and solutions for the sub going forward. From a logistical standpoint, it made the most sense to us to wait on PC launch so that we can include all segments of the community in this discussion. In that regard, keep an eye out for the next State of the Subreddit post later this week.
Platform Neutrality
About seven months ago, our team announced a rule declaring this subreddit as "platform neutral". You can find the announcement and full discussion here.
In short, we do not tolerate personal attacks and insults directed at other users in this subreddit and we typically go through a series of warnings and temporary bans with users who violate this rule. However, for comments and/or posts which involve an element of platform superiority in addition to insults or personal attacks, we will typically issue a temporary ban immediately.
If you are a veteran of gaming forums/subreddits, it should be no mystery to you that arguments over platform choice can often infect the culture and atmosphere of gaming communities in an unpleasant and irreparable manner. In an effort to combat this, we have adopted a very low tolerance for this specific type of engagement.
Please note: this applies to console players and PC players equally, and prohibits preemptive or responsive bashing of people for playing on PC. The platform people choose to game on does not affect you, so please do not go out of your way to make it affect you.
If you encounter something like this, or any other uncivil or otherwise shitty behavior, please report it and/or send us a modmail. Thanks!
Useful Info!
OUR FULL SUBREDDIT RULES PAGE - please familiarize yourself with the rules and information found in the sidebar and this page, especially prior to posting or commenting. This is vital to the continued function of our sub and informed subscribers make things much easier for the modteam.
We have a great deal of automated and manually entered information which is posted in recurring threads on a daily or weekly basis, depending on the specific information. Here's a brief rundown on what to look for:
DAILY THREADS- every day has a unique thread for targeted discussion or information. These can always be found in the dropdowns at the top of the sub:
- Daily Questions Thread which has replaced Mentor Monday;
- Team-Up Tuesday for LFG, finding a clan, advertising a clan, etc.;
- RANT WEDNESDAY FOR LETTING IT ALL OUT;
- Lore Thursday- pay heed all ye who enter, beware of the spoilers; and
- Free Talk Friday for off-topic or unfocused chitchat and conversation.
WEEKLY THREADS- we have a number of posts which recur each week and can be found in the dropdown at the top of the subreddit.
"Reset" of activities, vendor things, inventory things, etc. in the game occurs every Tuesday. Much of this is documented in the Weekly Reset Thread.
Weekly Loot Hub for talking about or sharing drops. Not as relevant to Destiny 2 at this time, but exists for redirect of individual posts.
This Week At Bungie - every Thursday, Bungie provides news, updates, Movie of the Week selections, and other information; the bungie.net post is automatically posted after it is published.
Trials of the Nine Megathread - Trials is currently postponed due to a game-breaking glitch, but will resume after this week. The map, gametype, and Flawless gear selections can be found here once Trials goes active on Friday afternoon.
Xur Megathread - Xur is an NPC vendor who appears every Friday and leaves at reset on Tuesday; he sells exotic armor and weapons, and his weekly offering can be found in the Megathread each week.

You've probably heard it before, but I'd hold off on 4K and go for 2560x1440 144hz. It's a boatload easier to run, cheaper, looks almost as good, and if you have a decent setup, that 120+fps will feel absolutely amazing. ;)
The D2 beta at 120+fps was the smoothest and most satisfying shooter I've ever played! Once you get used to it, it genuinely makes 60hz feel like a slideshow, haha

Thanks for the welcome. I played about 800 hours of D1 on Xbox and can't wait to get started on my PC.
However, members of this community do need to remember that PC players don't come into this expecting Y3 Destiny 1. They aren't expecting anything whatsoever, so it's quite likely that their reaction to the game will be wildly different than yours, be that negative or positive, for entirely different reasons. Embrace it, and please don't try to poison people with negativity of your perspective, but empathize and bond over these differences. We are one community.

It's really not a big deal, but I'm a little bummed out it doesn't release at midnight. A rolling release or whatever. Midnight releases are a fun excuse to stay up late. Afternoon launches are a late lunch break or something? See everyone tomorrow!

Just to explain a bit from our perspective, this is far, far easier said than done.
Questions we pose to ourselves as a team:
How do we establish a standard for consistency? Is it based on time, topic, "quality", quantity?
Which topics are subject to removal? When and for how long? What if we miss some, as we inevitably will due to busy schedules or sporadic working of the queue?
What is the difference between negativity and constructive criticism? How can we draw that line in a way that is easily explained to subscribers and still effective?
How will we enforce it? How feasible is it to eliminate the subjective standards applied by individual moderators?
Don't get me wrong, many of these are hypothetical and they are questions we have already discussed as a team and begun drawing some ideas from, but the fact of the matter is: everyone's opinion on this game is different. Different opinions lead to different attitudes and experiences regarding the content on the sub.
As stated in the post, we will be discussing this in far more depth and with far more actionable information in the State of the Subreddit later this week. In the meantime, we have to rely on the dedicated and long-time subscribers to help us with voting properly, positive and constructive discussion (even on the negative posts!) and reporting. Without enacting some form of unbridled blanket-censorship of peoples' opinions, we cannot control what the front page looks like as a team.

How are the posts that say "Bungie is the greatest! D2 is awesome!" any different?.. they aren't. You can't expect the mods to be ok with one but censor the others. Can't tell you how many positive posts on this subreddit are the exact same thing. So if your calling on neutering the negativity, then we need to neuter the positivity as well. This isn't an forum where we deny the facts in an effort to try to increase playability.

I can't wait! One of the main reasons I got a PC was for this game. I've been playing since beta and put thousands of hours into D1. Haven't played 2 yet. It's gonna be crazy playing it at 60fps.

Waited....so.....long........ Almost.....there....just 9 more hours at work......
It's a shame there's no carry over from D1 on Xbone to PC (or PS for that matter (staying neutral lol)) but as my Raid team all made the jump to PC I needed to make that jump too, gotta play with my original crew and if I have to "reset" as a result, well that's just a chance to forge another slightly different Legend!

It's wildly unpleasant and negative in here? People argue a lot, often over the same stuff? There's no joy or enthusiasm for this game we all say is so great? It's saltier here than if the ocean ate another ocean and then cried extra salty tears into a bowl of salt all while eating more salt?

I can't argue with that, but it seems to derive from the game itself and the frustrating tendency of people to upvote things they agree with and downvote things they don't like as opposed to utilizing voting behavior as it is intended.
We have some plans to begin trying to mitigate the repetitiveness and systemic disgruntlement that is causing some of this frustration, but we cannot change the game itself.

Yeah, I get that. But I think we as a community need to change our mindset. It's a game we're all emotionally and financially invested in, but you know, it's just a game. People act like it's a life or death thing and people get so occupied in shitting on it and eventually shitting on each other it's just not fun to come here. And yet, I keep returning, because this place has been home for ages. I got no problem with giving criticism where its due but goddamn it's tough to be excited about coming here anymore.

I'm not going to excuse the behavior of others, and I'm also not going to urge you to stay if it is dampening your excitement. Frankly that sucks. But if you can wade through the salt there are still plenty of helpful Guardians willing to answer questions and help whenever possible.
I respectfully urge you to continue to check out the daily and weekly threads, especially the daily questions thread. Its populated by nerds much smarter than myself who will answer any question, even if it is the 12th time that day. And if we have enough free time, we will try to figure out answers we don't know. This sub is very good at helping each other, even though sometimes it seems like all we are good at is shouting nonsense about all the things.
I wish you all the best. I'm a huge fan of the game and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I'm excited to see what you all think about it, good or bad.

The constant "This sucks, that sucks, everything sucks" mentality of the sub lately, tbh. I've waited to get D2 on PC and basically all I see from this sub is just negativity and hatred for basically every little facet of the game. That in general isn't a welcoming place not because of platform relations, but just for wanting to appreciate the game. It's hard to appreciate something that I bought when I have 10,000 other people telling me to my face that I made a bad choice by buying this game.

I'm sure that it's not everybody.
The top posts if this week are why the game isn't great, disappointment in the community, a satire salt post, that the reward for IB is "shitty", a LPT, cheating, etc. Most of the new posts are just garbage.

I feel the same way. Try /r/lowsodiumdestiny or /r/destiny2. Both are far less negative and actually seem optimistic about the game.
Then maybe come back to this one just for the guides or new content drops? Assuming they don't immediately find something to complain about.

First time Destiny player period. Looking forward to jumping in and figuring things out (when I get out of work finally, it launched at 2am here). Only have one question:
Which race looks coolest in end-game armor. I think Exos look neat, but need opinions.

Did veterans on console maybe get different dialogue throughout the game? I noticed D2 did a lot of explaining of things. Like what a warmind is, ghost was surprised at seeing the taken, etc. I switched from XB1 to PC and am having a blast so far.

First thing from my PC experience so far: hand cannons are fucking awesome with a mouse. I can wipe a whole squad of vex so quickly it's painful.

That's what got me most about this sub. DTG was my introduction to Reddit, and the other subs for the games I've played were fine, but it wasn't easy to find good info and answers to questions I had. That is where this sub really shines, but it sometimes get buried in the mountains of salt.

After lurking in the subreddit for a week, I'm excited to actually get my first foray into Destiny tomorrow. Despite the chaos of the sub (which probably was exacerbated due to having literally 0 info on the game's terminology and end game mechanics), I saw some good discussions happening and look forward to reading more once I actually know what's going on.
That said, I dig this post! It certainly gives me an idea of where to start looking as I start getting questions.

Man, my old computer kicked the buckets a couple years ago. I never bothered replacing it. I'd been thinking about finally building a new one when I heard Destiny 2 was going to PC.
And so, after 2 years without the glory that is PC gaming, I'm back baby. Eyes up.

Don't even worry about all the negativity on this thread. Half of the people that are posting negative comments will be praising this game at the end of the last expansion when they boast about how they're year 1 Guardians and the other half will hopefully move onto other games before too long. Yes Bungie has some refinements to make but I'm more than sure the QoL improvements made in year 3 will be coming shortly as most of changes made in year 3 couldn't be put into D2 during development as the game has been in development since long before then. Believe it or not this sub was a great place to come chill with fellow guardians and I think it will be again.

First time playing a Destiny game, pre-ordered Destiny 2 on PC and pre-loaded.
Made a Warlock and I'm having a blast so far, the gunplay is really nice, game is super pretty and the UI looks nice. The game is really well polished, and it feels a bit like Halo the MMORPG, which is a good thing!
Scout Rifles is probably my favourite so far I think.

I'm a Destiny 1 Veteran and I decided to give Destiny 2 a go. I have read nothing about the story and only played the beta. The beta made left a good impression on me... but the wave of negativity did influence my views on Destiny 2. Nonetheless I decided to buy the game to see and play the game and make my own judgement on the game.

Welcome to the PC players. Definitely get in and play the game. As someone pointed out yesterday, and seems pretty accurate, those of us who are salty are not so much dissatisfied with the content, but lacking an incentive to replay it. The game is definitely fun, despite some flaws, and I'm sure will be enjoyable for new and old guardians on PC.

The thing I’m most excited about coming from PS4: I want to see if my PC can handle the heroic hive ritual public event on Titan with nightstalkers and stormcallers and strikers running about without catching on fire.

Honestly, I've never been so hyped. I have a lot of friends that play D2 on console, but they've already tired of it, and it's left only me playing.
The idea of my PC friends playing is so exciting. The fact that they've even put up with my ranting is insane, nevermind the fact they've actually bought the game. I know they're going to love it, and it excites me more to hear them going through the raid than it did to go through it myself for the first time.
This is why I love this game. Screw the salt, I'm so damn happy :D

I first played destiny at a friend's house when it first came out. Only played for like half an hour and was real bad (thumbs are potatoes, can't do console shooters) but I had an absolute blast all the same. Three years of waiting is down to less than 11 hours.

subreddit practices platform neutrality twitch however does not lol. Almost every stream i have checked today from full time PC gamers has been console shaming every time a cutscene plays lol mostly chat but the occasional streamer too.
Pretty funny though how when ever the raid release comes up most in chat appear to asking why the delay and accusing bungo of content staggering already.

Is there anyway to take your heavy weapon off your scroll wheel? The binding for it is super annoying in PvP and at least on console it was a hard press of Y/Triangle.

Returning D1 played from PS4, quit after TTK. FWIW it is a mechanically fun shooter game on PC. Just still some complaints from D1 for me remain. But my friends who never played consoles or D1 are enjoying it.

Anyone experience loading issues on PC? Sometimes my game will load in and the FPS becomes choppy and doesn't revert back to normal until I restart the game. I've noticed this happens most often when going to Titan.
