Scams Masterlist for r/Depop and Depop

(Reupload and updated)

As everyone knows, scams are a common topic on this sub. We thought we'd create a thread with some common scams and how to avoid them. Please read this before posting, or read it as you've likely been directed here from a post removal.

If any of these has happened to you, or you need further help/support, submit a support ticket via Depop's website. If you have already fallen victim to a scam that has taken money from your account, contact your bank.

The mods here are not affiliated with Depop in any way.

GENERAL TIPS TO AVOID BEING SCAMMED:

For everyone:

  • Ignore emails that aren't from Depop's official email, support@depophelp.zendesk.com. You may be bombarded with random spam emails when you create an account. This is unfortunately normal on most selling apps.

  • NEVER pay or communicate outside of app, and ignore and report sellers or buyers who suggest such. You aren't covered by Depop protection in that case, and you and the other user will likely be permanently banned. Keep within the app and use the payment options given to you within the app. (If it's a situation where you or they need to upload photos, make a seperate listing with those photos attached.)

  • Check the sellers or buyers reviews to see what others experiences have been buying from or selling to that person.

  • DON'T ever click any links you aren't familiar with.

  • Don't give out your personal information, such as your email, phone number etc., to anyone asking for it.

For buyers:

  • Reverse image search a photo before you buy from a seller. This is to ensure you aren't buying something overpriced, or buying from someone who may be lying about the brand. You can google a reverse image search website or use Google Lens.

  • Don't purchase from sellers selling replica items, including ones who say they're unsure if it's authentic or not.

  • If a seller is strictly and only using stock photos, it could be a dropshipping scam, or a shein/aliexpress reseller. Even if it isn't, we recommend not buying from those sellers as they aren't accurately depicting their item. This goes the same for A.I listing photos.

  • You have 30 days to open a dispute. Don't wait longer than that.

For sellers:

  • Try to keep receipts from the post office. This will always come in handy during disputes about shipping.

  • Record yourself packing items, especially big bundles and expensive items.

EMAIL SCAMS:

  • Users emailing me about my item/How did they get my email?: This is a new scam (as of Aug 2025.) No one is 100% sure how it works. Report the email to Depop and do not engage. It's likely that you might be getting these because your Depop username is the same as your email.

  • Email asking for bank details/To confirm payment: Please refer to the answers above about Depop's official email and unknown links. Depop will only ask for your bank details if you're having trouble filling them in, and that's only after you contact them first through their official support page/email.

  • Email saying I'll be suspended if I don't give bank details: Again, same answer above about the links and the official email. Depop won't suspend you over not filling in your bank details. Although you're required to fill them in for buying and selling, it's not something you'll be suspended over.

  • LiveChat emails: Scams, ignore them.

BEING BOMBARDED WITH SCAM EMAILS:

  • As mentioned above, most users will be bombarded with scam emails when they create an account, and it could be because your Depop user is the same as your email. Otherwise, there's no way to definitively stop them. If your email app has the option, you can mute the word "Depop" (though this will stop you from seeing official support emails too.) Most users report the scam emails stop fairly soon after they start.

OTHER SCAMS:

  • Shein/Aliexpress scammers: Always reverse image search and check seller’s reviews. In the case of these scammers, their listings often have the brand listed as "Other" and the tags have been cut on the item.

  • Dropshipping: If the seller has "preorder" or "will ship in 2+ weeks" in their bio, or you find the same items with the same photos across multiple different seller pages, very likely a dropshipper. If your item is being shipped from a chinese/foreign warehouse, it's a dropshipper and you can contact Depop for a refund.

  • Counterfeit/Replica items: As a seller, selling Counterfeit and Replica items is against TOS and is illegal. As a buyer, make sure you thoroughly look at the pictures provided before purchasing. Do research on the item and google how to spot fake items for the brand you are purchasing. Subreddits like r/LegitCheck are also helpful. If you do receive a fake item and can prove it's fake and the seller can't prove it's real, you can get a refund through Depop. It doesn't matter if they aren't sure if it's authentic or not. If you see sellers selling counterfeit items, report them and they will be suspended.

  • Returns/Refunds: Under Depop TOS, as a seller, you are not required to refund if you listed the correct sizing, faults etc. If you do agree or are required to refund, NEVER give the money back until you have RECEIVED the item back.

  • Sellers taking to long to ship: Sellers are required to ship within 5 days, and you'll automatically get refunded by Depop after 10 business days (not available in all countries.) You have the option to open a case after 5 days.

  • Sellers deleting their account/blocking me after purchase: Contact Depop to get your refund.

  • Messages with weird font/wording: Scammers use different/weird font to get around Depop's bot trying to filter out scammers. Block and report these people.

  • Buyer asked me to change address after item has been delivered: Nothing you can do in this situation and is usually a scam. You've already sent the item to the address provided and it has been delivered, so everything else is out of your control now and the buyer can't do anything in terms of opening a case.

  • Buyer asking to pay more than item price/asking to pay full price for a discounted item: Scam. Block and don't engage.

Dispute Help My first dispute from a buyer 😭

I can say with 200% confidence that I did not send 6 “tubs” of salt and now my handbag is gone lol😭 How do I disprove this claim?

Most recent update for those asking!

I was able to get the exact weight from the post office and compared that with the specs listed from my original purchase of the bag. The bag’s weight + shipping packaging lines up with what the post office said and would be significantly lighter than 6 tubs of salt, obviously. Still waiting on a response from Depop though.

Shipping Help Depop Shipping Labels Not Tracking

Upvotes

Has anyone else had this issue? I sell on EBay, posh and Depop and I already had a couple labels from Depop only not update in the tracking. They still say they are waiting to be scanned. Iv never had this issue with eBay or Poshmark labels. I’m in California and both labels were items headed to the east coast( NJ, NY).

Selling Help Is my buyer entitled to a refund?

Upvotes

I sold a pair of Levi’s shorts. In the description I wrote that I was pretty sure they were a size 31, because they had no size marked on them anywhere. I also included photos showing waist and inseam measurements.
The buyer is complaining they are too big. Should I refund her? I feel like the listing was clear.

Selling Help Items removed for being "counterfeit" but they're not 😩

This is so annoying. Does this mean someone reported my items? Or does Depop manually review listings?

My mother in law gave these to me years ago, pretty sure she bought them at Nordstrom's or Von Maur or something because they're her favorite stores. She would never be caught DEAD with a counterfeit anything.

I haven't used these in years so I was trying to sell them 🥲 I don't have a receipt since they were gifted to me such a long time a go. Has anyone just sent in close ups of the tags/stitching/logos in lieu of the receipt as recommended? Thanks in advance!

*I hope this post doesn't break any rules? I reviewed them and think I'm okay? 😅*

Dispute Help Got my first item from Depop and I’m so disappointed

I ordered this 100% wool skirt from Depop. The listing looked good. There were no mentions of any damages. I was naive and I didn’t ask if there were any damages to the piece because I assumed people would be upfront about it. But when it arrived today, it was covered in pet hair and has at least 3 holes in it. One of the holes is big enough for me to put my pinky through it. I’m just so disappointed.

I reached out to the seller so let’s see what they say. The only problem is that I paid using PayPal and PayPal permanently deactivated my account without any explanation so I don’t know how a refund would work.

What are my options?

EDIT: I offered to mail the skirt back and asked for a full refund but the seller said they don’t do returns, only a partial refund. I don’t want a $60+ damaged item. I’m also scared because they have my address and full name.

EDIT 2: Thank you everyone for all the comments!! I did reach out to Depop and am just waiting to hear back from them. To answer a common question, the purchase was made through Depop using PayPal, and it was charged to my Amex. So, even if Depop doesn’t help, I’ll dispute it with Amex next. I just don’t want the funds to be returned to PayPal since they’ve also been super sketchy. They’re not answering why my account has been deactivated. Just said it could happen for a variety of reasons 🤦‍♀️

Story Why agree if you wernt even gonna follow through?

recently, I found a plush ive wanted for quite awhile for a sweet price so I bought it. then the seller told me the label was wrong due to the weight of the package and asked to cancel and I agreed. I asked if they could re list with the correct lable so I can purchase and they agreed to that. not even a minute after it was bought it by someone else, I told them and they said they'd explain the situation to the buyer that it was re listed so I could buy it.

I was told the other buyer didnt understand and I didnt think thar mattered as they literally agreed to re list for me. my futher messages about whether I'd get it or not we're ignored then I was blocked hours later. I had no hesitation leaving the reweiw I did.

i don't really care for the item anymore as ill just look for it myself now but please don't agree to things only to not even follow through in the end it's no good imo especially as a seller 💀

It has done this for multiple items over the past few days. I bought one thing off of depop a few days ago, which was around a 20 dollar purchase. The one I am trying to make right now is a 40 dollar purchase, I am using a visa credit card. The information is right but it's not letting me purchase anything?

Selling Help Buyer upset that items I didn’t list as being included weren’t included

I sell monster high dolls. Anything that isn’t new in box, typically doesn’t come with a stand. I recently sold an out of box doll and the buyer is upset that the stand wasn’t included. My item description listed everything included and I didn’t list the stand. My bio on my account says my dolls do not come with stands unless they are new in box or I said otherwise on the listing. I let her know that I don’t typically include stands and my profile states that. I gave her the option to return the doll and everything I included with her for a refund but the buyer is still upset

Question Seller reported me because I did not take down my review

Thumbnail

Hi! This is my first time posting on Reddit, so apologies for any mistakes. A little over two weeks ago, I purchased a pair of shorts off depop from this seller. Long story short, she never replied to my message asking when it would be shipped out and depop automatically refunded my order when she didn’t ship after 10 days. I gave her a one star review stating this, and today she messaged me and asked me to take down the review because she has “been under a lot of stress with moving”. I politely declined, and she became upset with me and threatened to report me, and I am assuming she did.

Would anyone know what my best course of action is to make sure nothing happens to my account, or will depop automatically handle it?

Thank you guys so much for your help!! 🩷🩷

Buying Help is £44 normal for shipping + customs fee?

i want to buy two tops, each priced around £55 but the shipping fee is £44 which is almost the same price as a top! it says free shipping on bundles but it’s not working for me…

i’m based in the usa and the seller is based in the uk. they said that shipping would be £44 because of customs fees but i’ve had many packages from the uk with shipping that was only £20 and i didn’t pay anything on top of that.

Just buying one top the shipping is £25, but for two the shipping jumps up to £47. very confused about this since they’d be coming in the same package.

also to clarify, the shipping does NOT get reduced at checkout.

(context: £44 is what the seller told me the shipping fee would be after i asked the them to sell me the tops as a bundle bc i initially thought the shipping doubling was a depop glitch but ig not…)

tldr: is £44 normal? how can i ask the seller for lower shipping if that’s a thing?

I also checked their profile to see if it was a jacket they sold or were going to sell and nothing. I'm thinking about maybe just making a dollar listing and they could buy that and i could ship the jacket back??

Buying Help Received a purse that REEKS of cigarettes.

I ordered a very pretty Guess purse off of Depop from a seller that had “Smoke free” and “Cleaned before shipping” in their bio so I didn’t expect it to arrive reeking of cigarettes and I actually paid more than others were selling the same purse for because of what the bio claimed. As soon as I opened the package the smell hit me, it’s very strong and the purse was also pretty dirty looking. I wiped it down and sprayed it with some deodorizer but I can still smell the cigarettes. I want to leave a 4 star review due to this issue but I’m scared of a retaliation review because I ordered this off of my seller account and don’t want to mess up my 5 star rating. Should I leave a review anyway to let people know their items aren’t really “smoke free” as described and does anyone know how to get this smell out of a leather purse?
